Would be my only car. In saying that it would only be driven for 30 mins max a day.  :-\

Any other questions I should be asking the guy who is selling?

Hmmn if its standard and well maintained it'll be fine to drive every day - provided you're happy to put up with the noise, harsh ride, heavy steering and no a/c!

I'd just go look at the car.  probably worth getting a feel for whether the owner is an enthusiast, they need a fair bit more tlc than most cars.

Sounds like you should be owning a Mk2 16V :) It will get you to work on time everytime ;)

I had one of each (at the same time) and surprisingly I had way more problems with the Golf (mainly the cooling system).  Having said that, the Golf got rush hour traffic and the Abarth got weekend drives in the country (and race events)...

And I have driven both but owned none so my totally unbiased opinion would be the Abarth, simply for enjoyment, when you drive one you know you are driving an 80's classic, the Golf was almost to comfortable

If the rest of the population discovers the joy of driving Euro's what will we do to distinguish ourselves from the masses ?

Hmmm...never had trouble starting mine untill it was a weekend only car. So perhaps thats the trick.

Just get one and expect to maintain it, but eventually it will wear you out. they simply handle whatever you throw at it with a "is that all you got" attitude. Unburstable power delivery. Bottem line - nothing else even comes close for the cash.

Nope Nik, private sale in Wellington. Somewhat cheaper than the trademe car and comes with spares as a bonus. That red one on trademe is standard car with just a cage i think.
