Hi,

I have a bog standard Mk5 Golf GTi and want to know what anyone out there recommends to make this baby go faster. I've looked at Superchip's Bluefin which is about 1900 bucks and gives an extra 40 odd bhp and 40Nm of torque. Sounds good. So any advice on what people have tried would be great.

Thanks.

hi, and welcome.

have a search under "chip" or "remap" there should be a few topics on the subject, not sure how many specifically for mk5 gti's but most of the companies mentioned tend to do the VAG range.

here's some for starters:

Hi,

Thanks for the advice so far. I have updated my signature with the specs of my car...but it's bog standard as I didn't want any extras (apart from iPod adapter). I've searched some of the UK forums and found a few reviews of Superchips and their Bluefins. Initially I think I'll add a K&N air filter. I put one of these in my old 206 GTi and for such a minor change it made a noticeable difference.

I've just had my S3 tuned by www.chiptuning-nz.co.nz

Took it from 210hp to 290hp with a huge increase in torque thrown in for good measure. It feels like a new car and it really does go hard now. Incredibly smooth and not at all like my old MTM version. Absolutely nailed an HSV coming down the north western yesterday - 4th or 5th gear he had no answer. At least he could laugh about it.

Cost was $1100 fitted. PM me if you want a drive or any more details. cheers

wow! 290, was this measured? is that just from the remap or is there other stuff? the chip tuning site puts remapping the 210hp S3 to 257hp.

Nice that you have a manual :)

Did you test drive a DSG model before purchasing the manual?

Thanks! I decided before getting one that I would get a 6spd, DSG is not for me. I did however drive a DSG but only because the dealer had a test drive and my old 206 was getting a service. It reaffirmed my decision not to get one. It was good, but the DSG took all the fun away from driving. I also drove a 6spd R32. Very nice, but I just found it a tad too much hard work where as the GTi was far more enjoyable. Plus I love the grill on the GTi!

That is impressive! I'll check out their website. Sorry for my ignorance but what engine is in your S3?

it was measured on the Torque Performance dyno before and after tuning. 210Hp before and 290 after  ;D

the only other engine mods are a BMC filter and a full miltek exhaust (cat removed). Needless to say i was extremely surprised with the high figure. It is running 23Psi boost for the majority of the rev range, unlike my MTM which peaked at 24Psi and dropped off reasonably quickly after.

Do you need any other mods to support 290hp? Brakes etc? And as Turbo mentioned the website states the tuning will take it from 210 HP up to 257 HP. Were you expecting 290 HP?

i've never found the S3 to lack in the brake department. A little spongy perhaps, but they always stop time after time. I run a set of H&R springs in it which decreased the understeer considerably as well as making it more stable at speed. I would definitely recommend them if you can't afford to go with coilovers. Just need to watch driveways and carpark ramps...

ah, that's starting to make sense now. was the cat removal noticeable when you first did it?
a milltek full exhaust and no cat on mine could add another 40-50hp apparently. probably similar figures for you, which would suggest 290 isn't unreasonable to expect.

must be pretty quick.
torque figures would be interesting, what did they peak out at?

the S3 and TT were the only ones to receive the 1.8T with 210/225HP as far as i know. This engine has a larger turbo, twin intercoolers, amongst other mods. I don't believe you can get much over 240HP with the 1.8T from the golf gti, a3, a4, passat etc without changing several engine components.

Interestingly the filter and milltek (no cats) was the setup i had when it ran 210HP... and given that they are 210HP from the factory... it goes to show that unless you tune your car for the exhaust it is a waste of money.

Torque is a weird one on dynos as the gearing needs to be taken into account to work out the true figures. So the figures below aren't correct, however you can see the increase. Figure is at the wheels.
Before: Peak 450Nm @ 2600RPM
After: 690Nm @ 3400RPM
can anyone calculate the true figures for me?

Blue is before - red is after

:o
flippin heckballs!

so the only difference between runs is the remap?
that's really interesting that the exhaust made no increase until the chip told it to. computers scare me. HAL9000 is running our cars.
