I've seen Horchs MB. It is going to be the equivalent of a new car when he has finished it, and will be the top urq in NZ. Beautiful.

Me too, yes it?s a beautiful example of an MB...

Horch is correct, it came here via the UK. It's not quite NZ new, but is about as close as you can get otherwise. Assembly was 31 Oct '87, then was reg in NZ just over 2 months later, - on 11 Jan '88.

Yes the first MB series engine to land and was deliver kms only. It was at this time Torsten differential was introduced into the Audi 80/90 quattro and the mb urquattro. Revolutionary change to quattro. The Nelson dealer received the car for some injector work under warranty. Long ago and I could be wrong but first NZ owner was Allendale orchards.?

I  accumulated an informal register over time of quattros that are known to be in NZ.

Does this list include the normal coupe quattro?.

I'd have to look it up, but that does sound right, Horch. Owner was chairman of NZ Apple and Pear Board or ENZA  I think. Next owner was Ian Bremner (of Bremworth Carpets apparently :EDIT June 2021 cannot verify Ian Bremner was involved with Bremworth Carpets) then Dave Lumsden, who owned the Datadot NZ franchise. Then just me 😕

Sorry no. This data was originally collated in the day but no longer available which is a shame given the significant number coupe/coupe quattro delivered vs the vehicles that remain on the road.

I had a play with the latest NZTA data from 1981 to 1989 and came up with the following quattros for the Wellington region.
Wellington black 1984 engine number WR004412 imported 1987
Wellington black 1985 engine number WR004825 imported 1995
Porirua red 1985 engine number WR006560 imported 2006, which is mine
Lower Hutt gold 1984 engine number WR003595, imported 1984
Masterton black 1983 engine number WR003969, imported 1988
1985 Audi urquattro
1980 VW Scirocco S
1987 VW Scirocco Scala
1967 Dodge Coronet
1984 Chevy Corvette

Forgot to say, that the total number I came up with are 44 cars nationwide as of last month but this excludes the RR's and will most likely include coupe quattro's.

I tried to filter out everything else.

The info is not great due to typo's such as quattro with one t and missing and false engine numbers. Unfortunately I cant see the last 6 digits of the vin, so its a best guess.

That?s cool, any way to see how many of those might be MB?s vs WR?s ?

I found only 2 confirmed MB's and 1 maybe.

1987 silver. NZ new. MB001025 in Marlborough District
1988 red. NZnew. MB001395 in Auckland
1987 white. NZ new, missing engine number in Waikato

I am not sure if the data captured all of 1989, so I could have missed a couple.

I got an excel spreadsheet with the data but cant post it on the message board. If somebody wants it or knows how to get it on the board please email me your contact details.

The 1987 silver. NZ new. MB001025 in Marlborough District could be the missing Zermatt MB Horch refers too ...

All this recent activity has had me scratching through my documents tonight, and uncovering the previously unrecorded engine number. On NS2146's NZ Certificate of Registration the first recorded owner is a person from Richmond Nelson, no company or definitive address details, but a internet search shows that person was a Director of Alandale Orchards (plus others including ENZA). No mileage is recorded for the start of the document. It does wrongly record the cc rating as 2144 instead of 2226.

The engine number is MB001033.

Wonder if possible to contact owner ?

wolfgang

The only one who would have that info is NZTA and its unlikely that the info would be released to anybody, even police has to have a very good reason to search for it.
The best bet would be for somebody in Nelson or Blenheim to find out who works on these cars and to ask nicely.  :)

Interesting reading.
Hmm, so if I have the vin number, engine number, rego (first rego Oct 1986) etc would it be possible for me to be able to find out some history on my coupe quattro (where built, month)?.
I know of the first owner and he had the vehicle for the first 10 years.
Who would know or who to ask?.

wolfgang

I took the quattro to the brit and euro car day in Upper Hutt and was very surprised to see a red coupe quattro parked there.

It was an NZ new 86 model with the black plate MR something, was a bit rough around the edges but looked solid.

Sorry no photo but was just womdering if it was somebody from here.
