Hi there

Preffy sure it's pre facelift.
I know how you feel about $35K. It seems so low for a car so amazing.
Unfortunately those vehicles on the market that are not of such a high quality (high kms, rattly, lots of owners etc) bring the market down for the rest of us who look after our cars, which is unfortunate.

easy way to tell, if you have clear rear indicators and reverse lights, and also 1 piece front lights/indicators then its facelift. Pre facelift models dont have ESP, so if you have an ESP button, then its a facelift.

i paid $28K a year ago for mine when it had done 38kms. Sure it's a 1999, but in immac cond. Today you can get one for low 20s. I personally think $35K is a bit high even for a facelift. Or rather, it's a bit high in comparison to what some people are asking for them. I think they're worth every penny of $35K+

Should be worth at least close to what you are asking then. Good luck!

Just been reading about these cars, what are the Audi unique problems ?

They seem to be quite fast, how about cornering, rallying, etc

What did they cost new ?

Beating up parking wardens ain't a crime.

No idea what they cost new but i would think they would have been $75+. The new S3 retails at $77+. If you get a haldex controller they could possibly be good for rallying, but for the street they naturally understeer, although rarely pushed to its limits. Stiil a very fast, comfortable, stylish car, theres none quite like it 8)

Mine cost $80,000 for the car and $5,000 for the chip late 2001... ouch.
Problem wise, I've had absolutely nothing go wrong with mine.
They're fantastic machines, they handle really well, Quattro helps.
The S3s are very quick, especially with the chip.
I drove a used RS4 recently, surprisingly it didn't feel much different.

Agree with your last sentence.

I had 2 S3s - 2000 and 2002 - the latter being the 225 engine and latest updates - both chipped - MTM and Oettinger respectively (Oettinger much nicer to drive). However the 2000 understeered a lot more than the 2002, which was very neutral under power - they must have changed the Haldex programming to give more rear bias on hard cornering. It certainly understeered much less than the 2000 S3 and even more so compared to my torsen a4s ('96 1.8T and '07 DTM), which have dreadful understeer when pushed beyond the limit.

This latter characteristic is why the A4 has always lost to the 3 series BMW in driver desirability comparisons (at least until the new RS4 ;) )

Cheers
