I have to do this soon, Vert1 should be able to give you some advice. Does your car have airbags?

have you disconnected the water coolant hoses from the heater inside the engine bay? i suspect the heater is bolted through the firewall too.

Four bolts go thru the firewall, disconect the heater hoses, degas the AC and disconect it. Then find the four nuts in the engine compartment and the heater unit will come out. Two of the nuts are around the AC lines where they come through the firewall, the other two are more towards the middle of the firewall.

I spoke to one of the guys at VW Spares, he seemed to think with Mk3s its only really the VR6s that do it?

Id be interesting to see pics as I have to do this job soon.

Did you use a manual to guide you though the process? Was it a lengthy process? How much time do you think it took?

maybe there should be a "pulling out your dashboard" masterclass for Mk3 owners,

my heater is disconnected at present because it was leaking, I've got a replacement heater matrix (thanks Julian), so I need to decide whether I can be bothered doing the work, with all the hassles, or to pay someone to do it, probably it'll be summer again when I get around to it  :D

I'd just have bits left over if I attempted something like this...I like to tinker, but can't do anything serious without the fear that I'll destroy my car for good.

there's that, but it's also the sheer amount of time it would take me lying upside down on the seats to get to bits underneath!!

That's actually a really good point..I am very claustrophobic, so couldn't bear to be stuck like that for long...

I prefer to give the professionals their due and let them do what they can to earn their living...

all good and well getting professionals to do this job,

but do expect around 8 - 12 hours labour to do this,

so labour could easily be up to $700 or even more then youy still have to have the parts on top of that, then regassing AC and if you have installed your own stereo.

Have to worry if it has been connected up correctly again.
