Where can I buy G12 coolant?
« on: April 04, 2005, 05:23:39 PM »
I'm wanting to replace my radiator coolant, It's specified as G12 RED not the usual G11 GREEN. ???

Is there anything on the market other than from the VAG stealership that has a G12 rated RED coolant.

Anyone know why VAG went to G12 and if G11 (green coolant) will cause any problems if used long term ???

there is a massive debate on the internet over G12 versus "normal" anti freeze, do a search in google and you'll find heaps of threads discussing it.

personally I have no idea what to believe, but I know that if you change your coolant regularly your obviously less likely to get corrosion around the cylinder head and that seems to be the main reason VW introduced G12.

I bought some G12 from Qualitat but I'm not sure if they are cheaper than CCS, I think they buy a lot of their stuff from them or one of the other dealerships?

According to VAG our engines should only use G12 (1.8T 1998 >).

Mine has had both over a period of time, and at some stage probably in Japan it was mixed >:(
This caused all sorts of corrosion and build up on the head which required expensive repairing >:(

The last service good old GREEN G11 coolant replaced the RED G12, so now I am concerned I should go back to G12.

It seems if you replace regularly G12 is not required, so I'll stay with the GREEN for now.

Any one else with any experiences.... ???

normal green is fine, its all made for alloy engines so cant hurt your car. The red stuff is used in toyotas as well its a longer life coolant but personally i think its worse cause you dont clean your system as much, also it goes all horrible and like a grinding paste if left much to long, i have seen many toyotas with a horrenduos mess in there cooling systems form it. Also its more excpencive and probly more unevironmental when you split a hose and spill it on the road. Incidentally this is where all antifreeze ends up (on the road) and then into the sea and local streams. Even if you get it proffesionally flushed it just goes into a big soak pit then down into the water table. Im told also that if you have unwanted stray cats you can leave a bowl of it out for them, they drink it (dogs do to) then die horribly. Nice. So if you have wanted pets, dont leave it lying around in drain tubs. In NZ we only need about a 25% mix at most and if you loved your car you could use distilled water in your rad mmmmm nice. It is more for its corrosion and anti boil propertys that we need it obviously, the anti boil thing being acctually quite important in modern cars.
Companys like Audi and BMW and all of them really are constantly trying to make you belive that only there product will work in there cars. Its BULLs**t. But do use the Hydralic oil from Airflow hydralics in new market for your Audi power steering, its $10 a litre instead of $20 for citeron green stuff or $60 for Audi stuff. Righto

HA  ha
 Im orggti.

I think I have got better at writing :P

If you read what I'm trying to say (and its not easy even for me :-[) its that, some antifreeze does get used for these reasons, and the bulk of it doe's just end up in the sea.
I am warning people not to leave antifreeze around in containers where cats can get to it.

Mate you don't know BB. Anyone one here that knows him would know that A. he would not poison or harm any cats, or any other animal for that matter, and B. in his long winded way he is simply cautioning people to dispose of old coolant properly.

Take your crap elsewhere...

Patrick it seems English is your second language?
And yes I can see how you are reading it and that is seems to you that I am joking and saying "nice" and giving somebody ideas or something but I promise that's not what I intended.

I am warning people that cats drink antifreeze so don't leave it around in pans after you drain it etc.

 Ok Mr Malone?

I think it is really good that you cared so much that you joined up here to make a stand against what you thought was me being cruel, your my sort of guy yet its funny you thought I was the opposite of what I am! I own two dogs and two cats and am the biggest animal lover here except for all the others ;)

Ive got a toy poodle that Choppy gave me and a Maltese terrier cross.

And thanks for sticking up for me coons. In the end its nice the Malone cares like this though so its not really crap hes talking.
Welcome to Vask and I hope you get some enjoyment from here.

What cars and animals do you have and where are you from?
