Hi, can someone inform me wether the above year 1.8t engines are based on the earlier 90's VW block/crank etc or are these totaly redesigned engines that have nothing in common with the earlier NA
Golf/Vento etc 1.8 and 2.0l engines?
I know the 5 cylinder heads are a new casting/part.
What about the crank/block/conrod design?
I read somewhere some of the 1.8t's have a cast rather than forged crank?
Any info would be apreciated.

!997-1998 Audi and VW 1.8t Passat engines have AEB code, dimensionally same as 16v engines.
I have heard that they share same casting as diesel block, unconfirmed tho.

AEB also have cast crank,Mahle forged pistons and 16v 144mm x20mm rods.
Same bore and stroke, even have mk1 front engine mount holes on block.
You can even fit a MK1 water pump on block, same bellhousing, same oil pan mount, the list goes on ;D

Forgot to mention John, these engines also have piston squirters, not sure if 16v engines do.

Thanks for that. What sort of k's could you expect from these engines if serviced regularly?
Is 190k near the end of the engine turbo's life?
Are they robust?
I have read about oil sludge problems on US sites, is this fact or fiction?
(yes, the 16V has oil squirter's, KR/9A/ABF)

John, i really dont know what mileage you could expect from a 1.8t, but i really cannot see any reason why they would not do similar huge mileage to the 5 cyl turbo engines .

The turbo itself should give good service, i have never used any sort of turbo timer, i think they are just a sales gimmic.

Sludge is purely crap servicing, modern oils have detergents as you know and should be no different to any other modern engine.
There is no reason why they are different.

AEB engines also have the distributor hole, just covered up, not used.
The intermediate haft drives oil pump, same as every other early vw 4 cyl.

Just re the mileage FWIW my brother in law has a 97 A4QT that has just nudged 211,000 kms. Seems to pull well, no discernable smoke from exhaust even at high rpm and negligible oil usage between services.
