not sure about NZ, but in the UK you could buy an A3 1.8T quattro, but it's not "real" quattro it's haldex like in the Golf V6 4Motion
Daily Driver - VW Touareg V8 TDI 2012 "towing beast"
Too Many Cars - Lotus Elise S 2013 "tangerine dream"
Project Car - Golf VR6 Turbo "built not bought"

Only A3 based car available in NZ with quattro was the S3. A chipped A3 1.8T would give a non-chipped S3 a run for its money - less weight with front wheel drive vs only about 20HP less power.

The transverse engined VAG cars (Golf and S3) use the Haldex centre diff rather than the torsen and function very differently although very equivalently in terms of ability to get torque to the road at all four corners.

In VW four wheel drive is called 4Motion, in Audi it is called quattro - marketing rules over strictly correct descriptions you see :)

Cheers

Is the 2.4 audi six similar to vr6 or is it completely different?

I understand it powers the front wheels until four wheel traction is required. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Completely different. The VR6 is a narrow angle transverse V6 while the 2.4 is a wide angle V6 spun 90 degrees

Never seen A3 quattro (the 1st A3 shape) in NZ, have seen lots of A3 1.8t autos (yummy)
5speed ones (the one ya want) are mostly thrashed or overpriced.
