Hi guys

Would anybody please be able to advise me on where I can get chip tuning done and how much I'll be looking at spending? I have a 93 Golf VR6 and I'm looking at increasing the performance and have decided to start with the engine first. Any opinions and info will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Luke

Hey Luke, TBH i would not bother with a chip for the VR6, i had a vr6 only 6 months ago. You would to start be better off sorting the intake and exhaust on the car, by removing the cone that goes into the airbox and uprating your air filter for a better aftermarket filter, and simply removing your CAT you should already see around 5 - 10kw difference or at least i did by just doing those 2 things. After that if you feel it still not sufficient then by all means get a chip for the car. You will be looking at around $1100 - $1395 for a chip and you will only see around 5 - 10hp gain.

Hope this helps.

Also getting good spark plugs and a decent set of spark plug leads.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Dubbed, I will def look into it. I came across brand new OBX 6-2-1 headers on trademe for $670, a friend of mine said I should expect at least a 20-30kw increase. That followed by freeflow exhaust system I should be content for a while lol!

What would you say I could expect as a guesstimate? Also, I'm not familiar with OBX, is the brand any good?
Cheers, Luke.

Wouldn't bother with a chip. Like Dubbed says get it breathing right first. OBX headers are aawesome, pair it with a good exhaust and you'll be laughing.

:-\ Please explain in more detail Golfboy666GTI? I was told the same thing by SAC's of south africa who fitted a Brospeed header and exhaust system(along with air filter) and they gained 22kw off their VR6 2.9lt. Brospeed is a brand from Bosal.

i agree with Nik, i doubt a NA car can gain 22Kw with just an exhaust and air filter. you want more detail.... i have no idea  ;)

Perhaps there could be a gain of 22hp from a larger displacement engine, but that is not likely to be your results. You will not achieve 22kw from headers. In terms of explaining ... internet reading will confirm potential gains from installing headers much more accurately than the guy selling the product.

???I apologise....ive got the figures mixed up...they are indeed hp not kw. 1000 apologies guys!!!! ;D

Even 22BHP is a big call IMO. Ask GTIVR6, I think he has aftermarket headers that are spoken of on his VR6.

You won't gain 22 KW from exhaust, I doubt you would gain 22 HP from headers and cat back.
10-15 HP is more likely from full system.

Well John i did a CAT removal and different rear box and did a replacement panel filter.  netted a 13KW@ the wheels gain which is around 25 - 30HP. Which is about right. If i had to remove the suitcase muffler i will be surely have gained more.

Hennie, if you gained 13KW at the wheels then that will be 17.5 hp plus 25% drivetrain loss to equal about 22 hp, not a bad result although I do find it hard to believe. Was that done with a dyno run before and after on the same dyno?

Hennie was that the one that I did for you with the cat removal-and i know that im not going crazy when i say that there are a few cars that do get that kinda result! Suppose that it could depend on the quality of the engine and the job done to it,right? :-\
