Gooday everyone, i'm thinking about putting staggered wheels on my s4, but been told by mate that i shouldn't really put them on quattro, coz it'll damage the system. Is that true? cheers

Staggered, thats a new term to me.
Do you mean 15" on the front and 22" on rear?

Or Are you talking about offset

Perhaps different offset and rim widths front to back?

Shouldnt affect the drive train in your car ,but guard clearance could,if you retain factory offset

yes mate, coz really want these deepdished (100mm)wheels to go on the car, so the guard work is next thing i have to do. cheers for your suggestions

If you want custom guard work, done properly, but probably costing a few $$, go see Andy at Race FX. He does allot of custom builds on race car bodies. Have your wallet ready!

Ummm why bother with different diameter rims if you're going to get tyres so as to get the same rolling diameter anyway?

But yes, putting wheels&tyres with two different rolling diameters on a quattro will put a lot of strain on the centre diff and inevitably damage/destroy it.

Deepdish looks is what i want, so have to put wider rims on to get it aye, cheers for your reply about the diff knowledge mate

Ohhh so you're looking for rim depth/offset rather than diameter?  So the rear pokes out more than the front but they both are the same diameter?  That's fine that doesn't affect the centre diff at all.

Staggered relates to only wheel width in all situations that I have come across, most high powered RWD Euros have wider rear wheels than front.

For instance all AMGs have factory staggered wheels.

Oh my bad.  been reading the whole thing wrong!  :P ::)

I guess the question would be, CAN you get tyres that would be exactly the same rolling diameter? Because you'd need to run larger tyres on the 10inch rim than the 9inch.

Say you had 235x35s on the front which gives you 647mm
vs
255x30s on the rear which is 636mm, or maybe 265x30 which is 652mm..

I would guess 5mm difference would be fine?? perhaps you'd get this much difference from a worn pair of tyres to a new pair anyway??

Yeah, its not hard, 225/40 fronts equate to around a 245/35 or 255/35 rear

Not sure if the very minimal difference would stuff up the centre diff though?

slayer00

I ran 205/40/17 on the front and 215/45/17 on the rear of my 80 quattro with no apparent problems. It may take a while todo any damage

Yes mate, i'm getting 235/35/19 for front, 275/30/19 for the rear, diameter is 1mm difference, cheers

Yeah I'm running 215/45-17's at the rear and 225/45-17 up front with no expected problems. The overall diameter difference is about 1% I think which is probably a lot less than the slop in the drivetrain.  :-[  I put the slightly large tyre up front as it does more work. Having said that though when they wear out (which may be immediately after next Friday  ;D), I'll replace them with 4 the same size.  I recognise the factory engineers are probably smarter that I am so will do as they do.
On a Coupe quattro that is.
