Title: B6 Passat wagon buying and stereo advice.
Post by: VW'n on July 07, 2016, 06:21:20 PM
We are looking at buying a 2l fsi B6 passat.
Test drove one yesterday and liked it a lot but do have a few questions.
Are there any common faults to watch for.
Our bugget will likely get us a car with 70k on the clock and likely own it until around 130k is there any major services I should be a wear of in this window.
what options are out there to replace the Japanese stereo with something with Bluetooth
, conect to the revers cam ect and English.
Thanks

That will have a DSG box won't it? A mate of mine had mechatronics unit crap out in his Passat which is costing thousands. Between 70-130kms you'll have a DSG trans fluid change and a cambelt.
It it were my money Id get a 3 series Touring.

No from what I understand they are pretty much all standard auto with the excetion of a few of the newest b6.
I'm not keen on anything with an early dsg box.

Nah. B6 passat had dsg from 2005-6. Pretty much the same as mk5 golf. Think of it like a bigger golf with heaps more space.

Bugger.

So is dsg really such a big concern? or is it no differnt to owning a mitsi cvt etc?

dsg is light years ahead of any cvt.
just check that its been properly serviced.

OK bar a couple of potential weaknesses that regular maintenance can minimize I feeling that these are pretty reliable cars.
Is this a fair assumption?

Here's my list of things to check / weak points.
please add to it.

Check dsg serice history and allow for full service for peace of mind.
Check/replace cam follower.
Check all servicing is up to date.
Carbon clean.

Any one got advice on sorting stereo?
Is this as simple as buying a comparable stereo and plugging it in or is there coding involved etc.

It needs to be OEM can-bus if you want it all to work properly. Be wary of the hundreds of Chinese domestic market sets with built in Bluetooth that flood eBay and Aliexpress.  They work, up to a point, they  look OK, and are very cheap (don't buy from Trademe sellers here in NZ), but have no can-bus

Plug and play with the right aftermarket one. Can bus so all the steering wheel controls and all that crap works. Android 2.3 is preferable for downloading apps

Thanks guys.

I'm still shopping for the right car.
Looking like I might have to make a trip to Auckland to check some out when work slowsdown.

So cam belt is every 6 years or 100k which ever comes first?

So tomorrow I'm going to test drive a 2010 1.8tsi 7 speed.
Any thoughts on the 1.8tsi engine.

Avoid like the plague. Dog of a motor, known for its ability to self-destruct

Do some googling on TSI timing chains, unless someone knowing more than myself can tell us that VW fixed the reliability issues by 2010, or that the issue does not effect the 1.8L?

Yeah that doesn't sound good.
I can't find anything specific to the 1.8tsi but would assume that it's the same just lower displacement.

So took the passat in for its 60k dsg service and the mechanic rings to tell me it's not dsg just a normal auto.
Which explains why I have never noticed the Rev match on down shifts etc.

Yeah, my brother just bought one too. His is blue, 2.0T. Same as yours if I recall. I assumed his was DSG too but he got told same as you at Taupo VW.
Might explain why I thought it was a bit sluggish and checked the diverter valve for splits but it was fine.
Did you sot out a new stereo? I've told my brother to get the RCD 330 G or RCD 330 Plus.

Mine came with one of these installed and it works great.

Auto gravity did the install also from what the dealer told me.
Unless he has a reverse camera.

My brother has had a 2006 2.0T Variant for ~3 years, also automatic.
