Pity really as this market has been left to Mazda alone
Lotus could have had it if they had evolved the original Elan instead of trying to move up market (largely unsucesfully) or MG had they ever been managed properly after John Thornley and a succesion of hopeless owners didn't help either of them
Surely there's enough interest from Porsche, Seat, Audi to go ahead without VW ?
Porsche in particular have much experience in picking up abandoned VW projects.

I think it's probably a bit down market for Porsche's current leanings, the day of the 914 are long past, but I certainly agree that there's possibly a niche for somthing a little more sophisticated than an MX-5, particularly with the opportunity for developing the light weight eco/fun aspects of the XL-1
