Whats req to change to 5x100 but retain the mk2 subrame and arms? I dont want to change to mk3 gear because I have brand new mounts and neuspeed sway bars all ready installed, just need bigger brakes, Is it just a matter of swapping in the 5x100 hubs?
I thought you just told me all that stuff just swapped into a mk2 in that mk2 brake upgrade thread ???

Yea that's what I'm doing too, bolt mk3 hubs to the mk2 subframe and lower arm. Using the mk3 lower ball joint.
Bolt the mk3 stub axle with rear discs to the mk2 beam at rear too.
So you are going to do 5x100 hubs on mk2 gear to keep the track the same? Let me know how you get on
Get the hubs redrilled ,rear is real easy as most disks have plenty to redrill (have checked that),my new ones were around 16mm plenty to hold a bolt.
The front ones are a little harder and you will most like need to weld up disk retaining screw hole (from memory) while since I checked that.
If you set up the bearing carrier in a press properly you can most likely reuse the bearings,if the bearing are bad to start with you will need to change them anyway,depends on your budget.
I gave up trying to buy 4-5 stud adaptors as the freight was crazy from os
There is a bearing/ hub 5 stud exchange for the front but I think you have to machine the later 5 stub hub inner to fit the stock bearing
Its up to you if you want to use 14mm or 12mm bolts,14mm is a pain.

pretty sure the 5 Stud hub presses in to the Bearing of the 4 Stud...
I think they share the same bearing.. so you should be able to just press it in throw the CV in and away you go..
and the back as you know the Disc is the Hub...
For 288mm you cant just swap the flanges over the disc's have different off sets and wont work. I have just been down this path. I was told you could use Mk3 Gli hubs with 5 stud flanges but that doesn't work eather. The only way i could make it work was to use Mk3 288 hubs and you have to modify he lower ball joints to get them to go into the a arms.
I don't mind going to 5 stud I just don't want wide track.
So Mark do the mk3 lower ball joints not fit into the mk2 lower control arm? What needs modifying?
the holes need to be widen by about 5mm each side. The ball joint fits, the holes just don't line up.
Sold the VR6 now so won't be getting the bits.
I will just fit the bigger 256s if I can get some.
Yea the holes are in the wrong place and it is a bit think. Nothing a grinder and a file or a mill if your lucky can't fix.
It is possible to run 280mm 4x100 brakes on the Mk2 - you just need to use late Mk2 GTI 16V, B3 Passat, Mk3 Golf hubs with 280mm VR6/GTI calipers/carriers over a pair of 4x100 280mm discs.
Basically the same as the Rallye/G60 set up except you may need the thinner 256mm style brake pads - not sure on this though.

What didnt work in regards to using the gli hubs with the 5x100 flange? And what needs modifiying on the ball joint? I can machine anything I need to at work
There is no 288mm disc with the right off set the carriers would have to be machined down so much that the would be very strong.
Ok, so modify 5x100 ball joint to fit mk2 arms, what needs to be modified?
The bolt holes need to be elongated and it is a little bit thick to go into the arm. And i think you have to cut a bot off the side of there it tapers around the inner bolt hole.
Just picked up a complete vr6 setup so will see what needs to be done on the weekend
Ok so I have vr6 hubs, calipers, rotors and ball joints, looking at the hub it will not work with mk2 arms as the ball joint is offset and the mk2 is in the center so the wheel will not be centered in the arch, so will need to grab the arms and shafts as well
Yea it has a little bit of positive camber. I was going to get some adjustable tops

This is true... re-drill or buy 5 stud rear discs, while the front hubs from a early? mk3 will press into the mk2 hub carriers! They share the same bearing as stated. by keeping the mk2 subframe you lose the ability to go wide track which requires more parts... arms, steering arms etc

Yes they press in but you cant get any disc that will work.
Early style 5 stud Passat disks do dont they?
the early 5x100 Mk3s are basically the same set hub/caliper up as the late 4x100 Mk2s, hence the 280mm VR6 caliper/carrier fitting on the G60/Rallye 280mm 4x100 discs and vice versa.
The Ex-Tyz Grey mk2 that i wrecked had 5 stud conversion without being Wide Track.. (front and rear)
so it is possible.
yea for 280mm but not in 288mm.
