Title: Project car 2018 Golf GTI
Post by: 80 Vert on February 08, 2019, 06:17:06 PM
So its time for something new, our 09 MK5 3 door has just been the most awesome & reliable car for the last 5-6 years we've owned it and considering its now 10 years old still relatively low km's at just 82k
Anyway I've been looking for a mk7 3 door for some time but pretty much impossible to come by in NZ as they were never imported and Japan is all 5 door as well......what to do......MK8 will see the 3 door dropped all together so its now or never.
After looking at a lot of options I found a 2018 Candy white 3 door 7.5 face lift with only 10km's on the clock, no not 10,000 just 10km  >:D
Downside was its DSG when we really wanted a manual as that's what we have now, deal was too good to pass up so late last year it was purchased and shipped.
After a lot of thinking I've decided to bite the bullet and do a manual swap, crazy I know but why not!
Something satisfying about pulling a brand new car apart, anywho motor and box out, dash out etc etc
Next week will see manual bits going back in, hopefully it all works out  ;D

Can't blame the forums, it's definitely a Google related issue.

Flickr does have a phone app. You're limited to 1000 pics before you have to pay.

Imgur is still free.

+1
Just google. Mine have never worked posting image links through google.

There is an online service that converts the url you get to the correct format for posting images as embedded object.

https://ctrlq.org/google/photos

Although I am still struggling with that one too.

It can only be run if you are logged into your google account.

changes the url from googleusercontent...etc to photos.google.com/share

Yes, your right, sorry. I even have the phone app 🤦‍♂️
However, it?s the app that doesn?t allow you to set the links so that they show directly in the forum thread.

then definitely don't use any google apps, I started a new role and found google docs and sheets a right royal PITA

I use imgur, it's simple to upload pics the right click 'copy image location" and paste into the (//) brackets

Nice to see VW have carried on the tradition of using a manual brake pedal with a larger foot plate spot welded on for automatic / dsg.
Simply drill out spot welds, remove plate and manual foot pad clips in to place. Haven't had much time on this but hopefully start removing some of the required wiring from my donor tomorrow.

In the thick of it now, 2 switches on the gearbox and clutch pedal position switch to wire in.
Takes an age to do as neatly as possible, while I'm here ill probably fit the factory fog lights as well since it didn?t come with any.

And.............it runs.
Wiring done and clutch switch works, dash goes back in next.

Coding so far has been easy, removed the auto trans from the Can installed list and re coded the engine ecu to manual.
Turn the key on and to start, the depress clutch message pops up. Push clutch in and presto engine start.
With the wiring in and seemingly everything works as it should I put the dash back in, I probably didn't really need to pull it but I'm glad I did as its given me way more room to work so in all I feel it was worth the extra hour or two to pull out.
Getting at the pedal and wiring would be a right ball ache with the dash in place.
Dash going back in and making sure all the scrwes go back where they came from, VW has really perfected assembly as they have greatly reduced the amount of fastners needed to bolt these things together.

Console back in with ofcourse the best part, a 6 speed gear stick! Added a new screen and sat nav hard drive so that will require messing around with to get working but now's the best time to install it.

Slow progress, damn work keeps getting in the way.
Car is mostly back together and just waiting on a couple of small things to be sorted out, then on to remap, exhaust and modification!!
I have a center exit exhaust rear valance coming from overseas, factory VW part made for the MK7. Need to fab an exhaust to suit but thats easy enough.
The MK 7.5 3 door is awesome, pitty they will stop making them.

you ended up selling the mk5 already?
What clutch and flywheel did you use? as the OEM ones are crap if you tuning.

No the mk5 is still in daily use till this is ready. Will be up for sale soon.
Wife's car so I doubt there's going to be much playing around unfortunately,  as much as I'd like to go crazy I've been forbidden  ;D

Forgot to update this, the car has been together and road registered for a little while now and is a little ripper!
Love the manual box, retro fitted sat nav with the 8" screen which was a nice upgrade.
Still have to get the ACC calibrated and adapted for manual gearbox but thats thankfully not stopping it being used.
Once all the fault codes are taken care of and everything is working I'll look at a stg 1 and some sort of exhaust set up.
Still under 1000km on the clock so a bit more running in on stock boost won't be a bad thing.
