Thought I had better start one of these before I get too far down the track with the car!

Car: 2005 Audi A3 Sportback. 2.0T FSI. DSG. Reflex Silver

Initially bought a very similar car in April 2012 (2005 2.0L FSI Auto) before looking online at suspension and wheels, the modification bug hitting again after a few years hiatus and deciding I was much better off with a 2.0T. Traded it in on this one a month later and only lost $500 or so in the process so couldn't complain too much.

I'm pretty sure most of the options it came with are standard on the 2.0T; but in any case I have Xenons, Auto Headlights, Electric folding Heated mirrors, Coming/Leaving home lights, Highline DIS w/ trip computer, Rain sensing wipers, Aluminium trims & leather bound steering wheel.
A few options I would like are cruise control, interior (ambient) lighting pack, Map/Ambient lighting LEDs, Bluetooth, Ipod connect, & Multifunction steering wheel. So I will be retrofitting these at some stage.

It is a Jap import with 107,000kms on it at time of import and the previous owner had put on a Remus catback exhaust. Auction grade 4. The trims are a bit scuffed up and some of the dash buttons are worn, otherwise it is in very good condition.

Why not just buy an S3? An S3 Sportback is unfortunately out of my pay grade at this stage and I wanted a Sportback. Paid $19,000 for this car in May 2012. At the time an S3 Sportback was around $60,000. It is also nice to have something a bit different that I can put my stamp on, where as an S3 is pretty much complete out of the box.

I like the MK5 Golf GTi which is pretty much the same car, but I like the fact the 8P shape is still current (up until later in 2013, albeit with a facelift in 2009) and the A3 has a load of OEM+ mods which can be pulled off the MY09+ A3, S3, RS3, R8, TTS/RS etc. We also have a MK5 Golf GT, and I feel the A3 is a fair bit ahead in interior build quality. The Golf interior is nice but does look and feel a bit 'plasticy' in my opinion. The Golf GTI at the time also cost a little more (and is still the case to an extent) which is a bit strange considering the A3 2.0T costs a fair bit more than the GTI when new. It seems Audis lose their value a bit quicker than VWs in NZ although its not the case overseas. Either way, it means the A3 2.0T is a great value proposition.

Here is a few pics of the car when I purchased it.

Drove the car pretty much straight off the lot to GLIDNs to get a few tips on what to do next (he had helped me out with a MK4 GTI a few years ago).

The car looked like it had been well serviced and looked after but there was a few things to attend to. The DV was blown for starters and the car was way down on power and had a misfire fault code. It had a service done by the AA when it arrived in the country but I didnt feel too happy with the type of oil used (some type of Sinopec) and wanted to know exactly where I was at with the car.

The next week it was in at German Automotive to get the following done to get a nice clean slate to start some modifications off with.

*Cambelt Replaced (Full kit with water pump, G12 coolant & flush etc)
*DSG Service (new fluid & flush, filter, seals) - GA outsourced this to Tristram European
*Revision D Diverter Valve (Piston Type)
*New HPFP Cam follower
*New OEM spark plugs
*Oil change w/ Valvoline Synpower 5w30

The car was a completely different beast after having the diverter valve replaced. The old one had a big tear right through it. The cam follower wasnt too bad but had definite wear on it.

I also ordered 4x new coil packs (revision F) from DBC Tuning in the states for $150 landed (over $350 here at the time!).
It turned out the car had received new coil packs in Japan in 2009 with a recall that was going around at the time from Audi (Giltrap Audi looked up my chassis number and that came up), however one coil pack wasnt working correctly so thought I would replace them all and be done with it.

Needed to do something about the scuffed trims and new trims from Audi are $500+ so bought some 3M Carbon Di-noc film to try my hand at wrapping (excuse the bad quality photo).

Not 100% happy with it but its much better than before and I will have another crack at it further down the track.

At this stage I was pretty happy with the performance from the car. Felt significantly quicker stock than our old MK4 GTI with a Chiptuning flash.

Then a Forge Twintake came up, and was still chasing an intermittent idle issue so put a BSH PCV Fix/Delete on too.
Around the same time replaced the fuel filter and a throttle body realignment was done on it, which reduced the issue by around 80%.

(https://www.vask.org.nz/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr522%2FJPK_%2F20130308_163712_zps59460e9d.jpg&hash=cdbf214cb251e54f4815338017c53d31275179ff)

Engine feels like it revs more freely with the Twintake but I wasnt expecting much of a gain before tuning the car. DV sounds are now a lot more pronounced and it sneezes like darth vadar between changes.

Started stockpiling more goodies over the next couple of months..

(https://www.vask.org.nz/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr522%2FJPK_%2F2012-11-12104703copy_zps6b86adb1.jpg&hash=d8db0969417dfc78f820e787241afc8a6c47a64c)

*H&R Sport Cup Kit (Monotube Shocks & 55/40mm 'race springs')
*New OEM strut mounts, bearings & bolts etc
*034 Motorsport Street Density Transmission & Engine Mounts + Torque mount insert
*Whiteline Anti-lift kit (KCA316)
*Whiteline Front Control Arm - lower inner front bushing (W0503)
*Whiteline 24mm Adjustable Rear Sway Bar (BWR21XZ)

Decided on the H&R Sport Cup Kit as it is very good value for a matched Spring/Shock set and felt I would be happy with the ride height due to NZ roads.
Coilovers would be great but would cost over double by the time I took low volume certification into account.

(https://www.vask.org.nz/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.etektuning.com%2Fproduct_images%2Fuploaded_images%2Fvw-rabbit-ck-mg-3114-medium.jpg&hash=9692080bb84422b5dba24753baadc65c95dfe668)

Didnt want too much NVH so after a load of researching decided the 034 Street Density mounts would be the best bet for my application. They use an OEM housing with a denser higher durometer rubber. Pretty much the same product as the THS mounts from the UK. Thought I would leave out their subframe mounts as I dont want to have to drop the subframe at this stage and there is a lot of reports online of significant NVH when using their subframe mounts.

Back into German Automotive to have the parts installed and got another oil/filter change at the same time. Had only done 3000kms since the last one, but mostly round town driving so thought I may as well.

Got a call from GA saying that the front dampers were the incorrect size (for 50mm front strut, instead of 55mm). The rest of the kit fitted fine.
This was infuriating as I had specifically asked the supplier for the 55mm front strut version and provided my chassis number and full vehicle details.
The supplier (Frank from Orange Tuning in Germany) initially told me he was happy to swap the front dampers over, then promptly disappeared off the face of the planet. Fast forward 6 weeks and he had still not replied. The only reply I ever got from him was after I emailed him links to me posting threads all over the place warning people not to deal with him - "nice job mate" was all I got. Couldn't get a paypal refund as it had been 10 weeks or so since the initial purchase.

To buy the dampers on their own cost me $600 a few months later... Those are the risks when buying online. Although I was quoted $1700+gst for the cup kit locally so I still saved $200NZD on buying local after the whole fiasco.

GA ended up using the OEM Sachs front dampers with the rest of the cup kit for now.

Here is some photos after the suspension had settled in a bit. Doesnt look super low but its definitely a 55/40mm drop from stock. That horrible arch gap is gone
and looks how it should have from the factory.

Very happy with how the car performed after everything was installed.

H&R Cup Kit - Happy with the ride height after it settled in. Corners beautifully and whilst it is firm, definitely not unbearable by any stretch.

Whiteline ALK & Front control arm bushings - Probably the best value mod ive done to date. The car feels 'planted' and steering is improved; feel more in touch with the road. Wheel spin in 1st & 2nd is drastically reduced. Obviously I did both at the same time so I cant be 100% sure but im thinking the front control arm bushings improve the effect of the WALK and improve traction further; reviews ive seen elsewhere would support this.

Whiteline RSB - Big reduction in understeer. Initially had this on medium setting. I dont drive like an idiot but I did get a fair bit of surprise oversteer around a corner on one occasion. Also had a bit of creaking from it initially. Packed a bit more grease in which fixed this and put it on 'soft' setting which I believe is still around 100% stiffer than stock from memory.

034 Mounts - My OEM transmission mount was completely shot so I would have got a big improvement with even a stock replacement. No real increase in NVH with these mounts including the torque arm insert. The car feels far more solid and the engine movement that was felt under load before has disappeared. Would also thoroughly recommend these.

At this stage there is very minimal wheelspin/axle tramp/wheel hop. It has pretty much disappeared completely.

Also installed this around the same time to try and get rid of the low speed subframe clunk that plagues A3s & MK5s. Worked for a short while... (https://www.vask.org.nz/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fc1552172.r72.cf0.rackcdn.com%2F131058_x600.jpg&hash=fdccd427ee9df871569e09de622e03a7587e8c3d)

Found a guy in Melbourne selling an Oettinger bodykit (minus front bumper & grille). It was brand new and he had decided to part out and sell his car before installing it.
Picked it up for $750AUD. Which was a huge saving on the $3000 or so it would have costed to get the parts landed here. You either love or hate this kit. I have always liked it and with the right wheels etc I think it will look sharp.

Shipping turned into a nightmare (another $600+ for air) as the boxes are big. Was looking at sea-freight then it turned out there was a good excuse to go to Melbourne a couple of weeks later so flew over to pick it up.

Time for new wheels & tyres. Went with replica RS5s. I would usually be careful with replicas as I have heard a few horror stories, however the company making these, WSP Italy seems to have a very good reputation and makes a great product. They have more of a concave than an RS3 wheel and a lower offset.
19x8.5 43et.

Also tinted the car around the same time. At this point I feel the wheels are far too aggressive for a standard A3 and it would need to be lowered a lot more to look right. This will be fixed when I install the Oettinger kit later on.

Could only budget for a mid range tyre so after a few recommendations chose Neuton NT5000s. 225/35/19. Fantastic dry performance and grip and cant complain too much about wet performance either. Although I don't push the envelope too much with FWD in the wet!

Offset is pretty aggressive at 43et. Stock is 54 or 56 from memory. Not getting any rubbing or anything at this stage.
There is much more stretch than I thought there would be with a 225/35/19 on a 19x8.5 wheel, but im told this is a characteristic of the tyre?
In any case, its not enough to reduce performance I wouldn't have thought.
Scared to death of curbing them and have been using the electric mirrors on every single parallel parking manoeuvre. Touch wood I haven't curbed them yet.

The other half got annoyed with the Oettinger kit lying around the house so I had it painted and fitted before deciding what to do with the front bumper.
Im not a huge fan of the Oettinger front bumper, although I do like the mesh grille.

I had purchased an S-Line front bumper on 'Trademe' but unfortunately I failed to realise/notice at the time it didnt have the facility for headlight washers. After a bunch more research I decided against an S-Line front as even with a Cupra lip it wouldnt be aggressive enough for the rest of the car. I love the sleek S-Line look, but its not the route I have decided to go down with this car.

CarPro in Milford did a great job matching the paint and fitting the kit. It looks a bit unfinished with the stock front, but that will be fixed soon.
There was a little shaving of the skirts required to fit perfectly, but otherwise it fits like a glove.

Very nice car. I love the Sportback version but you've done a great job of refining it without going over the top.
Keep up the good work!

Thank you :)

At this stage I desperately needed a bit more go to match the looks. I had spent the last 6 months researching different tunes and whilst most options in NZ seem to be decent and get good results, I decided to go APR Stage 1 and the price was a bit more affordable during their XMAS sale - www.goapr.co.nz . The guys have great customer service and im happy with the experience.

APR quote 189kw/252bhp and 303lb/411nm with 98ron. A significant increase on the standard 147kw/197bhp and 207lb/280nm that Audi quote stock.
I'm not sure if the Remus Catback & Forge Twintake would add anything much to this. Im thinking another 10kw or so tops. I will have it dynoed before doing any more engine mods as a matter of interest.

First drive. Fairly big wall of torque from around 2500rpm and it gives you a decent push back in the seat, but dies off by 5000rpm and it just feels like its going to redline for the sake of it. Nothing to do with APR as all K03 cars suffer this and im told this improves with the HPFP upgrade and downpipe, but there is of course limits on the K03. Probably better off changing gears at 5500 to get the most out of a Stage 1 car.

Seat of the pants. Its a quick car now and as I havnt dynoed it yet I can only compare it to other cars ive been in/driven. The most recent car ive been in to compare was a fairly stock Evo 8 and I would say that this is quicker. Definitely not off the line and probably not over 120kmh, but otherwise it seems to have a bit more punch.

I didnt opt for ECMS as I dont have cruise control fitted yet. I will do this when I go Stage 2+.

As a side note, I wouldn't say I have any real issue with traction. I had less traction with the stock car before suspension, WALK, mounts, tyres etc. Will see how I fare with Stage 2+ further down the track but im stoked with how the car is putting the power to the ground to date.

APRs standard stage 1 dyno sheet is below. It definitely feels like what it shows on there. (It is a US dyno, so 93 = our 98)

A couple more minor mods.

Bought an interior LED kit from a guy in the UK. Error free. Not the best pics.

Have a few more parts accumulated and they will be fitted by the end of the week.

I will try and explain the reasons I have purchased these items below and for what purpose so excuse the essay.
I know it is easy to buy a bunch of performance parts and throw them at a car hoping a track weapon will magically be created. I will admit some of these items are probably overkill as I don't intend to track the car at this stage but they are also parts I would likely have replaced with OEM parts at some point in the near future either way. I am no suspension or brake expert by any stretch but have done a fair bit of research on these parts, so I would expect to get a good result out of them. Will try avoid any mod justification/placebo effect after the install. All of the suspension and brake parts are going in at the same time so it will be a bit difficult to 'review' any one part, just the end result.

SUSPENSION:
Whilst the engine mounts and suspension parts I have on the car currently have given a massive improvement, there is still a few parts I think should be replaced as I have done 114,000kms, the car is 7 years old and also to complete the handling package. There is a few annoying clunks and I would like to improve steering feel and tighten everything up. In addition to the below, I will also be replacing tie rods and ball joints with genuine parts. This will mean that almost every suspension part or engine/trans mount that wears in the front end will have been replaced after this round of mods.

I think that VAG has created a car that handles/performs very well out of the box in the MK5 GTI/8P platform and its not just about 'slamming' the car on cheap coilovers or springs - if you are in fact wanting good performance out of your car. I can definitely see a benefit in replacing wear components with heavier duty parts and parts specifically designed for a lowered car and performance orientated setup.

Whiteline FSB Adjustable End Links - KLC167:
The stock end links do wear and start to get noisy and would have been a part I replaced with stock items at the least when doing a suspension refresh. They are also not designed for a car that is lowered and especially not a car that is lowered 50-55mm from stock at the front. The existing OEM front sway bar will have a fair amount of preload on it with OEM end links which can affect handling and the stock parts will also be working at an angle they aren't intended for (not sure if thats a major issue or not). Whiteline end links are a LOT beefier and are of course adjustable so any preload can be dialled out. Im not sure I will get a huge amount out of this mod but either way I will feel better having it on the car and the cost was only about $50 more than OEM.

Whiteline Bump Steer Correction Kit - KCA314A
(https://www.vask.org.nz/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fuspmotorsports.com%2Fimages%2FD%2Fwhiteline1.jpg&hash=78ae389a6df32a507f26c458de7c71f3b5395d61)
I was on the fence about this mod, but once again the cost wasnt a huge amount more than OEM and there is some features I feel will be beneficial. The first outing (KCA314) had an issue with the dust seals cracking but I understand this has been fixed for the KCA314A. I dont get a huge amount of bump steer currently but it is definitely there in certain situations. Like the above end links, this part is designed for a lowered car and corrects the caster that is thrown out by lowering from what I understand.
I will be happy if I get better steering feel/feedback. These replace the OEM tie rod ends and Whitelines sales pitch is below:

QuoteReduces factory toe out from 5mm to 0mm (at 40mm bump).

Whiteline’s bump steer kit is designed to change bump steer characteristics depending on driving conditions and is achieved via extended tie rod ends (KCA314) or by a combination of mounted spacers to reposition the steering rack. For racing it is beneficial to reduce the amount of bump steer to give a more positive feel, sharper handling, and reduced understeer. This kit is essential for lowered cars.

Whiteline Trailing arm front bushes - W0504:
I havnt replaced any bushes in the rear end to date and have experienced a slight floaty feeling in the rear when cornering at 100kmh. Apparently these tighten the rear end of the car up and reduce this, along with giving a more precise feel. I was tossing up between these and the new 034 Motorsport Spherical bearing kit, as poly in this application can bind and pack/wear relatively quickly (from what 034 says). However the 034 product costs 3x the price and may end up being noisy. I brought this up with a tech at Whiteline in Australia before purchasing and they assured me that a spherical bearing is not the best option for street, they would have warranty issues and this product "continues to perform well in the market".

Tyrolsport Deadset Rigid Collar Kit
(https://www.vask.org.nz/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tyrolsport.com%2Fimages%2Fproducts%2Ftsdskvw.jpg&hash=c9fb638c45bff03e937fa1b26e7128d7ca86b686)
This product gets rave reviews within the 'MK5/A3 community' and not only eliminates any subframe clunking, it also tightens up the front end further, reducing slop and improving handling. More information on the concept is here: http://www.rigidcollar.com/what-is-rigid-collar
It isnt cheap but I am confident that I will get the result im looking for and get rid of that annoying low speed clunk!

QuoteYou can finally eliminate the subframe clunk that VW/Audi was never able to resolve. The OEM TSB “fix” does not address the root cause of the clunk because it reuses the OEM hardware. It’s not long before the clunk returns.

The failure of the OEM bolts is one of the primary causes of the subframe clunk, and they must be replaced. We have worked with world renowned fastener company ARP to develop custom hardware for this application. The bolts meet National Aerospace Standard for tensile strength yet mimic the oem hardware in shear. They are then nitrided for increased durability.

Our collars are machined out of 954 Billet Bronze Alloy for the ultimate in strength and corrosion resistance. It is the combination of this hardware which makes our kit so successful at solving the problem. Finally, a solution that works, is easy to install, and won’t break the bank!

BRAKES

I am reasonably happy with the stopping power of the OEM brakes, so I don't feel I have any real need for a BBK. It would be a nice-to-have but I likely wouldn't get much benefit from it on a daily basis for the $2500-3000 it would cost. I have considered an R32/S3/Golf R setup but once again the cost vs benefit for a street car and the 30% or so increase in unsprung weight over the stock setup doesnt make it particularly attractive.

However I dont like having to press the pedal a fair amount before it bites if I need to stop quickly and the pedal feel isnt fantastic. Brake dust with the OEM pads is also a bit of a pain.

What I am looking for with this setup is looks, lower brake dust, lower noise and a 10-20% increase in stopping power would be nice (if perhaps a bit optimistic).
Lower brake fade would also be good for a bit of extra peace of mind, although I havnt even got close to brake fade on the stock setup.

I decided to use OEM fluid on this occasion as from what I can gather aftermarket fluids are not the best for ABS/ESP units and im not really wanting to risk damaging a $2000 unit for the sake of a slightly higher boiling point. If the OEM fluid is good enough for R8s and RS models, im sure its fine for my A3.
Im sure I will get a good benefit and increase in performance just by doing a fluid change and flush (including ABS/ESP system flush).

Stoptech Cyro-Sportstop Drilled Rotors
(https://www.vask.org.nz/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tirerack.com%2Fimages%2Fbrakes%2Fsearch%2Flarge%2Fstoptech_crossdrillrotor_l.jpg&hash=b232b7f910c94838adacd7620b38fe8a6f437538)
These are mainly for looks if I'm honest. They are cryogenically treated which adds extra strength and means they are unlikely to crack. They also have a black rust proof coating on the hats and outside edge (im not a fan of rusty looking OEM rotors). Im not sure how a rotor improves this but the manufacturer states that these rotors increase wet and dry braking performance and add bite.

Hawk Performance Ceramic Pads
(https://www.vask.org.nz/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hawkperformance.com%2Fimages%2Fproducts%2Fpc-box-pads.png&hash=2bbdc786247211fcefd848f631440a1eedfc8079)
Not really much I can say before trying them. The manufacturers description fits my requirements.

QuotePC - PERFORMANCE CERAMIC BRAKE COMPOUND

Ultimate stopping power in an ultra-low dust, low noise ceramic compound!

Hawk Performance offers a premium, high performance, ultra-low dust, low noise compound called Performance Ceramic.

Performance Ceramic is engineered to reduce brake NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness), creating a quieter performing brake pad. Furthermore, the ceramic brake pad formula has a linear friction profile that allows your ABS brake system to work more effectively. With Performance Ceramic you can expect reduced brake pad wear, lower dust output levels and a rotor-friendly brake pad.

Tyrolsport Stainless Braided Lines
(https://www.vask.org.nz/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tyrolsport.com%2Fimages%2Fproducts%2Fpreview%2Ftsssbl.jpg&hash=cb4b2419a4a0909e6e8a504b01b5964be9a28a53)
Hope to get improved, more progressive pedal feel with these. Will feel a bit better about having new lines as well.
I doubt there is anything in it between the different companies that produce these. Tyrolsport seems to be as good as any of the others.

Tyrolsport Brake Caliper Stiffening Kit
(https://www.vask.org.nz/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tyrolsport.com%2Fimages%2Fproducts%2Fpreview%2Ftsbcskvwr.jpg&hash=428990cae50a4bbcb61d7275f2837107a4326075)
From the research ive done on this and reviews I have read, this product looks to be a very cost effective way of increasing braking performance.
It is a replacement for the OEM calliper bushings and related components. Tyrolsport states that the OEM rubber bushings create caliper flex,
leading to uneven pad wear, rotor deposits and reduced performance.

These arrived today finally. The price is within a few dollars of Bilstein B8s, which I was looking at buying instead of the H&R cup kit dampers. However I decided to keep it all the same and the damping is matched to the springs I already have in the car.

I wouldnt be surprised if they are a rebranded Bilstein B8 as the H&Rs are also monotube and at an identical price point.

(https://www.vask.org.nz/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr522%2FJPK_%2F20130319_175030_zpsc8ccda43.jpg&hash=727fc0ace983916548ac2bdf93808871e8836840)

The silver ones are the incorrectly sized 50mm dampers. Not sure what I will do with these...
Without stating the obvious, the 55mm dampers (black) are definitely a much bigger damper.

This was a bit more than I wanted to spend on a grille as there is loads of cheaper options out there that also look quite good.
It completes the rest of the Oettinger kit nicely though, the build quality is great and fitment will be as good as OE being Oettinger.
The grille is in matt black (which most people just run with). Im thinking about having it painted gloss black to have that nice 'Black Edition'
look which will be a nice contrast with the body colour. Haven't decided yet.
It comes with all the hardware to mount the mesh and the Oettinger badge. Still waiting on the Audi rings.

This also arrived the other week. Very similar to the fibreglass OSIR lip but made out of PUR plastic and T?V approved. Probably a bit more forgiving than fibreglass.

Should hopefully get both of these on next week.

Have been driving for a couple of days now on the parts that were recently installed.

BRAKES - Would thoroughly recommend these upgrades to anyone who wants a decent upgrade in braking performance without breaking the bank.
The pedal feel and progression instills a LOT more confidence over the OE setup. Did a number of hard 60-0kmh and 100-0kmh stops to break the pads/rotors in and the car pulls up nice and quick without engaging ABS. I cant get over how much nicer the pedal progression is. Nice and solid and progressive right through the pedal travel. Very happy with it. Little dust now (Probably 10% of OE) and no squeaking/squealing at all when coming to a stop.

Note: The fluid that came out wasnt too bad, so im guessing the fluid was changed in the last 20,000kms or so. The OE pads had around 80% left on them. The new rotors wouldnt have made any difference to what I am feeling initially. The tyres I have are nice and grippy so this would also assist with hard stops.
Made a bit of a mistake when purchasing 286mm rear rotors. A3s and Golfs didnt change from 260mm to 286mm until 2008ish. Have put in a set of new OE rotors for now and will look at new carriers and dust shields to upgrade to the 286mm rotors at a later date. Calipers look to be the same between both.

SUSPENSION - Firstly, the NVH and ride quality is now at the outer limit of what I am personally happy with for a daily driver. I wouldn't recommend going as far as I have if you value your ride quality over cornering performance and drive on bad roads a lot. I dont have much of a problem with it but I mainly drive on decent roads and only do around 6000km a year in this car. The combination of 35 profile tyres/19" wheels and the suspension upgrades do make for a hard ride. If you stick with a lower diameter wheel and higher profile tyre the harshness would be reduced quite a lot I imagine, even with the same suspension setup. A few rattles and squeaks were initially introduced, but a bit of WD40 and tightening a few screws etc here and there have tidied that up.

Now on to the good stuff.

Issues that are now non existent: No more subframe clunk or shifting whatsoever. You can give the accelerator a sharp tap at low speeds and the whole car will go forward, rather than there being a split second while the rest of the car catches up with the subframe. No more clicking when turning sharply at low speed.
No more 'compression' squeak/noise from the rear when going over bumps (Fixed by Whiteline trailing arm bushes and possibly new rear end links). When hitting a bump you feel it initially but it is dampened instantly and the car continues on its way with no after effects or bumping (probably mostly related to the correct dampers in the front now). No bump steer now either.

Steering feels a lot more precise and you can feel more of the undulations of the road through the steering wheel. Better feedback.
The whole car feels stiffer and much tighter.

The car feels a lot more 'point and shoot'. No more floaty rear end at speed. It feels extremely capable when cornering and you would have to be going at stupid speeds when cornering for ESP to kick in or to lose control. Im not game enough to test it.

The rear end links also needed to be replaced as one of them was bent and the other had a seized bolt. Decided to replace with OEM instead of Whiteline as the application is slightly different in the rear and the links are a lot stubbier and therefore I imagine have much less load on them than the fronts. The one on the right is the bent one in the picture below. The rest of the photos arent the best but you get the idea. Will try and take some more when its on a hoist next.

(https://www.vask.org.nz/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr522%2FJPK_%2F20130324_113323_zps55898036.jpg&hash=29cea1499f28ba5768085654fcd774c528f3f4f0)

Dont realise how many parts have been replaced till they are all sitting in a box to one side, most seem in ok condition and have no torn boots. Will take some better photos when I have detailed it. The fit of the front lip isnt perfect but that is to be expected from an aftermarket part I guess.

I may do something else with the front bumper at some point or have the lip moulded into the bumper. I think the grille turned out great.

Just off trademe. 3m di-noc carbon. I'm going to remove it and wrap the trim in a different film that I have got my hands on in the next couple of weeks.

Decided to switch out my original grandpa shifter for the 'S-Tronic' knob from the 2009-2013 model. This has been covered on forums in the UK and US a fair bit - the main issue being the orientation of the shift rod being different between the earlier and later models; the shifter button being on the front on the later models. I wont do a complete DIY as this can be found elsewhere, but have posted a few pics below of the process. If you stuff this up, the complete shifting mechanism needs to be pulled out and replaced, which is a $1000 part and will involve around 5 hours labour.

I used the 'grub screw method' with a replacement piece for the top of the shift rod I got off a guy in the US - pre tapped. This involves sawing off the top of the shift rod and drilling down 5mm into the centre of the rod, using a 2mm tapper and then joining the 2 pieces with an M2 grub screw. Couldnt find a 10mm grub screw locally so had to grind the head off a normal M2x10mm screw.

Picked up an RS3 knob from Ebay UK for a good price. It isnt branded 'RS3' so I dont have a problem with using it in my A3. This came in cheaper than the 'S-Tronic' branded knob and has punched leather and a silver stitched leather boot. However it is for LHD, so had to swap over the base on the leather boot, glue and tack it on.

When I was about to put the new knob on, I pushed in the button on it accidentally. This meant it wouldn't install and I had to pull the whole knob apart and 'reset' the button.

All done now. Very happy with the look. Up there with the best mods I have done on the car to date.

Also did a couple of other minor mods recently. The 3m Di-noc film was peeling off a bit in places - partly to do with the method I initially used and partly to do with the film.
Used an Oracal Carbon film which is a lot more pliable and used an improved method to wrap it and set the glue.

The film is very similar in look to the 'Aluminium Race' film that is an option on RS3s. This is the RS3 trim: http://image.eurotuner.com/f/editorials/eurotuner-project-audi-a3-20t-for-sale/36523414/eurotuner-project-audi-a3-20t.jpg (I had to use a wide piece of film to ensure the door blades had the correct OEM orientation).

Another pic in the gear knob post above. I think it looks like an OEM trim piece now, which is what I was after.

Recent dyno day - 145.5kw at the wheels. Feel that is a bit down on where it should be but could be anything I guess at 115k kms. Dodgy thermostat making it run rich, carbon buildup or even a clogged cat.. will fix those things at some point soon and see where it sits then.

Car is looking good! Really liking it!

145 is quite on the low side though, without reading what mods have you done /tune/intake wise?

Normally with a tune+intake you would be around the 145-150 mark maybe with DP around 150-160 depending on dyno reading i suppose.

The carbon buildup wouldnt be such an issue on power overall. What gear was he also running?

Just APR stage 1 tune and Forge Twintake. There was DSG GTI there at the same time that did 148kw atw with just the APR tune (no intake). Maybe the car will wake up nicely with a downpipe and Stage 2 tune and the benefits of the intake will be more apparent.

Replacing thermostat tomorrow as it has been a bit intermittent with getting to temperature. Will see if that makes any difference.

Torque runs their own 'dynotorque' dyno: http://www.torqueperformance.co.nz/dynotorque.php

The dyno is 'at the wheels'. So it will be around 170kw at the flywheel.

On paper with the APR Stage 1 tune and Forge Twintake it should be around 200kw at the flywheel.
APR quotes 188kw and Forge quotes around 10kw increase (backed up by loads of dyno sheets).

Torque Performance may not have dynoed it properly however, as there is apparantly a bit of an artform to dynoing a DSG car to give it full throttle but avoid it downshifting while on the rollers.

car is looking very neat and tough man!

does your intake make any noise out of curiosity? As i know they are very quiet.. and i know they do not offer much increase of airflow from what we have tested
Title: Re: My A3 Sportback Progress Thread/Diary
Post by: JPK on June 11, 2013, 11:38:17 AM
Yes the twintake is fairly noisy. I dont believe they offer much increase in flow/hp at factory hp level.
There has been plenty of tests from Forge and others that show a significant increase in flow at Stage 1 and above though?

Are you thinking of intakes that use the factory intake piping like the Carbonio?

I run the 3" VF Intake on mine as i have the GIAC Extreme .. 3" TBE milltek, intercooler, hpfp etc etc.. so mine will be louder than yours because of K04. And you definitely notice it as when we put the CTS k04 kit in the mk6 its doubled in intake sound as well as flutters more than a vl turbo now lol.

Myself, i'd go either VF, CTS or something along those lines as they work well and have on all the cars i have seen. You do get increased flow, but also depends what tune you're running and what not.

APR do love their 'if you get that mod, come back and get stage 45 for another $400!' theory which doesnt work for me lol

Well APR are the only ones with flapper delete. Which will receive the updated tune FOC.
Of course a turbo upgrade requires new software.

No tuner provides an upgrade for tuning with a competitors turbo upgrade.
That's just a given. 😜

On special and it's only $50 cheaper on special, normally only $20US difference.

I would only recommend this upgrade for MK5/A3 GTI's Stage 2+ (Downpipe, Intake, and HPFP - High pressure fuel pump) or above.
This however requires a retune as your cold start is affected drastically if the tune has not been changed to suit.

Nothing too major lately. Had the thermostat replaced last week which seems to have restored lost power and it feels quite a bit peppier. Could be placebo but I guess it makes sense as it isn't running rich all the time with a thermostat stuck half open. It gets to 90 degrees nice and quickly now.

Wouldn't mind putting it back on the dyno to check if there is a power increase but not keen to pay $170 for the privilage right now.

Other than that I removed the Whiteline bump steer correction kit. Unless I was doing something wrong it seems it has to be greased/lubed every 700-800kms. Otherwise it starts squeaking and creaking. I had also had an issue with the steering wheel sitting 10-15 degrees to the left permanently even after alignment was done (twice).
Replaced these with brand new OEM tie rod ends (revised part). No more squeaking and the steering wheel is perfectly centred again.

Also ordered an 'HPA Core Interlock Performance Motor mount' - 85a. http://www.hpamotorsport.com/mounts.htm

I have an 034 Motorsport (Energy suspension) dogbone mount insert at present that this will replace. It replaces the lower subframe mount completely and I expect this to be the last piece of the engine mount puzzle for me.
I am after smoother DSG shifts at lower RPM and zero engine rock. This has been minimised a lot with what I have done so far but I'm not completely happy yet. I can't believe I was ever remotely happy with this cars performance in this department when it was stock - I guess there was a lot of give/slop in everything so one single issue didn't stand out like dogs balls.

Yes, already have the 034 Motorsport transmission and engine mounts + dogbone insert. Have replaced all the other front bushings and the tie rods, ball joints, end links etc with revised or updated parts + tyrolsport deadset subframe kit in the interests of tightening everything up and getting that brand new 'performance' car feel. Still not quite there yet though.

Yes. Over $1000 for a full set of VWR mounts..

Strongly considering K04 but wouldn't touch a name brand kit for this car, not worth it. Can pick up all the bits for under $1500 (injectors, turbo/manifold and DV relocation) if you're patient and look for low km S3 and Golf R owners that are upgrading. Then it's just hpfp, downpipe and tune. The latter is required for Stage 2+ anyway.

The gearknob or the leather handbrake cover? The gearknob is a few posts back, the handbrake cover just slides over the handbrake lever when you have removed the old one and popped a clip out with a flathead screwdriver.

Some more goodies arrived in the past few days and are now fitted.. The car is at Precision Autowerk for a week or so being repaired though  :-\ Had a minor disagreement with a pedestrian.

Porsche 911 Coolant & Oil Caps + Audi TT-S engine cover

Decided to go with the Porsche caps rather than the usual R8 option. They came in around $30 cheaper, plus they look a bit sleeker IMO.
The TT-S cover comes with the mounting hardware required so a straight bolt on after that is installed. It is a tight fit next to the Twintake so I might trim it down a bit.
The R8/Lamborghini washer cap cover ended up being too small. Will either 'plastidip' the blue one or source a black one from somewhere and probably replace the firewall
sound deadening to finish off the engine bay as it is a bit tatty, if its not too costly.

Very happy with the look. Nice OEM+ update and covers what was a bit of an eyesore.

Facelift Tail Lights

Have been wanting to do these for a while. They are off the 2009-2012 A3/S3/RS3 and update the rear nicely.
I think they are one of the nicest tail lights out there. Quite similar to the latest Porsche tails.

The below adaptor looms are required as the plugs are different and a separate 12v feed for the inners needs to be taken off the number plate lights.
After that it just needs a little coding through VCDS and they work as intended.

very, very nice touch! love the bits you've done to this car.

btw, the coolant caps, etc. are they all standard sizes?

how much did you get them for?

Yes, standard size. Both were $99USD from BKS Tuning (have bought a few things from them, great service). They put them in the box with the engine cover so no additional freight cost.
The only minor issue is the coolant cap doesnt completely tighten on the exterior of the cap but internally its all fully sealed so no problem there. Apparently this comes right after a few kms according to a few forums I've looked at.

Ended up going with a Powerflex Dogbone bush (in the actual OE dogbone itself) and an HPA 85a durometer puck. Rather than going with a complete replacement dogbone like BSH or VF I though i would try replacing the OE bush with the powerflex as a more inexpensive option.

Just got both installed and it drives like a bitch. When starting the car there is a big muffled thud as it roars into life and the drone that goes through the car is significant. A lot of vibration and drone when below 1600rpm.

Very surprising and I am thinking that either the powerflex bush is causing most of this or these mods added to what I already have simply caused the vibration to cross a 'vibration threshold' of some type.

My experience goes against every review I have read about the HPA puck, all of which are favorable. Will be swapping the dogbone bush back to stock first and seeing if that makes a difference I think.
The HPA puck apparently settles down after a few hundred kms but can't find much info on the dogbone bush.

Audi refinement has gone out the window.. May as well be driving a full blown race car.

Looking at the above pic again it appears the large washer part from the original Torque arm insert has been reused with the HPA puck for some reason. Will take that off but not sure that will make much difference.
Title: Re: My A3 Sportback Progress Thread/Diary

the washer will make no difference, But as stated many a times now.
these mini mod upgrades, on the MK5/6 platform. Does take at least 2 months to bed in on a DSG equipped car.

On the manual version it's still there, but is gone within a few weeks. But due to free idle (I.E. no drag on gearbox as per a auto/DSG)
It's that which creates the in cabin noise more so than a manual.

don't worry I know how it sounds. I had to remove these for 4 MK6 owners already. they did not want to bare with it for at least 2 months.
It should also quieten down a little as the car gets hot as well.

4x MK6 owners had HPA pucks and powerflex dogbone bushes? I think you mean the torque arm insert? I have had an 034/Energy Suspension torque arm insert prior to this since last year and that had no increase in NVH really.

All sorted. Swapped out the pendulum mount with powerflex bush for a brand new OEM pendulum mount. Most of the vibration has disappeared.

Note for anyone else that is looking at replacing mounts. Replace either the subframe mounts OR the pendulum mount if going aftermarket. Definitely don't do a VWR or HPA puck AND a BSH, VF Engineering pendulum mount or a powerflex bush with OE mount.

I am now at what I feel is the perfect compromise between comfort and performance as far as mounts are concerned. I really rate the HPA puck. No more back/forth engine rock whatsoever. Yes there is a little more vibration, but very minimal compared to what I was experiencing and it doesn't bother me at all.

To summarise. I have 034 Motorsport Engine & Transmission mounts (Street density), a new OEM pendulum mount and an HPA 85a subframe mount (puck).

No, just the bottom one. The HPA Puck 'solution' just involves that. I realise the VWR option replaces both, but the install cost is significant.

Will replace the top one with an OEM mount if I ever drop the subframe for any reason. Also want a Front sway bar at some point but might not really be cost effective in terms of labour cost to drop the subframe.

EDIT: Here is a pic that shows the new OEM pendulum mount and the HPA Puck

I was planning on putting off Stage 2+ until next year... However an APR pump came up on vwgolf.net.au for $500AUD including postage so snapped it up. Have only ever heard of one APR pump failing in all the thousands they have sold, so I have no problem with picking up a pre used pump whatsoever. Apparently it had only done 15,000kms.

Also found a well reviewed 'cheap' downpipe from these guys www.godspeedproject.com . Ended up getting it landed for $364NZD which fitted just under the GST/customs duties threshold. I would have probably gone with a 'name brand' downpipe if I had a $50,000 car but that isnt the case and as far as 'bang for buck' goes, this has turned out to be a great buy so far.

Welds and quality of the downpipe look great and the fitment was good. It included the downpipe section, test pipe and a V-Band clamp. All in 304 stainless. The only thing it didnt include was a gasket which I picked up for $15 or so from VW.

Had the above installed then APR reflashed from Stage 1 to Stage 2+.

Phenomenal performance for a K03. My main complaint with Stage 1 is the big drop off after 5000rpm. The car pulls right to redline now and has a massive increase in mid range torque.
The power delivery is much more brutal than stage 1 but actually improves and smooths out the rev range a lot - less 'peaky' when downshifting at lower RPMs to go up a hill etc.

With the downpipe and the extra fuelling it sounds amazing when giving it some stick, but nice and restrained when driving normally with a very minimal increase in noise. The DSG 'pop' has increased in volume a fair bit and also does a big crack at certain RPMs.

I would go so far as to call it scary quick for a FWD road car. Quoted power is 280bhp and 440nm.
Will put it on a dyno soon.

Torque steer has increased a little but it is still surprisingly good in terms of traction. It spins/chirps into 3rd (tested on closed private road) but is still moving very quickly while doing so. The engine mounts, suspension, bushes and tyres are doing a great job at putting the power down.

Sunroof is possible (a guy on www.audi-sport.net did it) but it costs thousands for genuine and requires the whole interior to be stripped out and a bunch of welding done etc. Aftermarket never looks that great on these in my opinion and risks leaking etc. It isnt something I have really wanted personally in any case and adds extra weight.

Havnt added it all up. Excluding maintenance items probably around 34k including the cost of the car?

A couple of little updates.

Here is a pic from 'SOCOLD13' a couple of weeks ago. Picked up 'Best Post 2000 car'. Nice show, the organisers did a great job.
(https://www.vask.org.nz/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr522%2FJPK_%2F20130901_142420_zpsda78bf5e.jpg&hash=4599bcd83fc58ad09200450da0bc6b203020d62b)

Rear Brakes:
I realised earlier in the year that my existing rear rotors were only 260mm. There was a switch to 286mm somewhere along the line (I think around 2008) in these cars. I believe the Golf GTI had 286mm rears for most markets.
I found this out after purchasing 286mm rear Stoptech rotors so they have been sitting around until I sorted out what I needed to make them fit.

It turns out that the calliper itself is identical, it is just the carrier and dust shields that need replacing with those from the later model (or GTI). The dust shields arent really necessary so just purchased a brand new set of carriers (had difficulty getting used). Then painted them black as I didnt really want them the 'GTI red'. The extra 26mm makes the rear brakes look a fair bit nicer with 19" wheels and the cross-drilled rotors now match the front.

There isnt much detail on this swap online so here is a few pics below for anyone interested. Cost on carriers was approx $180.00.

My cig lighter and trim was scuffed up and needed replacing so decided to pick up the 12v 'flap socket' from the 'non smokers pack' out of the Audi parts bin. I think this makes the centre console look a lot cleaner.

It is an Oettinger Grille. From the USA in a closing down sale.
You can get them direct from Oettinger in Germany (for a hefty price).

The rest of the kit is also all Oettinger (with the exception of the front lip). I also picked this up
new from a guy in Australia who had it surplus to requirement.

The whole kit is around 5k landed from Oettinger if you cant find elsewhere on clearance or used.

Hey. Yes I am around there a bit. RS3 Kit can be a bit of a challenge as it needs new front guards and side mirrors etc (8P2 or RS3 guards dont have indicators on them).
19s look great but need to have the car fairly low.

You should come to a meet some time.

I have some money burning a whole,
happy to change the mirrors & guards. i heard it's mostly plug & play with a bit of ecu work
how do you change the side skirts? there's those great big steel pillars that run down there...

Price it up and make the call if its worthwhile or not for you. The full genuine RS3 kit is around 7k with guards. Possibly more with the mirrors.

Sideskirts are the same as 8P2 S3 (Sportback). You need the skirts and the door moulding/kickplate things (cant recall what they are called exactly). If you mix and match parts too much they wont line up with the rest of the car.

Have a look at the S-Line kit if you dont have an S-Line already. Much more affordable and looks very nice. Some guys overseas use the S-Line front and rear bumpers, rear spoiler and put on Votex sideskirts.

Have been a bit slack on updates. Decided to keep it for a bit longer as it has been a really good car and hasn't missed a beat. Considered getting another car but we upgraded our other car instead. Time for a little refresh on this one.

Wheels refurbished in gloss black with remachined outers, new centre caps and new Nitto NT830 tyres all round.
The tyres have made a huge difference. Have gone a bit wider to 235/35/19s. Better grip in wet and dry, lower noise
and not having that excessive stretch i had with Neuton NT5000 225s has made it ride a lot better. Have minor rubbing in the rear so need to sort that out at some point.

Roof and wing mirrors wrapped in gloss black.

Found a TT Steering wheel and airbag on Ebay from a wrecker in Sydney last year. $350inc delivery which was a steal.
Its uncanny how much a good steering wheel transforms the way the car drives. I didnt have Multi function on my old wheel but I do have the highline module so the buttons worked with a little coding in VCDS which was a bonus!

Also installed a New South Performance column mounted boost gauge recently. I'm not completely sold on the look of it yet but will give it a bit more time.. Have a few issues with the needle fluttering so trying to troubleshoot that still.

..and a few performance mods. Also switched to Unitronics Stage 2 HPFP tune + their Stage 1 DSG Tune (mainly to match the ECU & DSG tunes).
Very happy with the performance of the car. Have found the Unitronic tune to be an improvement and it isnt running anywhere near as rich as the APR tune was on my car.

I chose this intercooler based on the pricepoint, the fact its designed to flow significantly better than the standard intercooler - therefore minimising lag and it has had a stack of good reviews on overseas forums. I was about to pull the trigger on the S3 intercooler but this was around the same price with hoses and flows much better. I am not suffering from the horrible heatsoak I experienced with the factory setup anymore. The car pulls hard run after run. No noticeable lag at all. Excellent fitment, no modifications needed.

Much louder turbo spool with the CTS discharge pipe and throttle response seems to be a bit better.

Very nice, flat bottom steering wheel looks great!

I gather you didn't get any issues shipping the wheel with airbag on?

Picked up this RS3 steering wheel for a good price a few weeks ago. It was from a wreck and looked like it had been sitting in a dusty shed for the last two years.
The punched leather had dirt in the holes and the silver stitching was yellowed.

Started off using a light saddle soap with a toothbrush and cloth to clean it up, then a little shampoo on the stitching and finished off with a good leather conditioner.
Came up like new.

Decided to switch out the RS3 plate for a blank trim piece. The TT airbag I have is the same size with the same connections.
I also have a facelift (8P2) airbag cover with the chrome ring but I havnt had time to tackle that one yet. Need to be very careful when mucking around
with the airbag itself and have to use a rivet gun to fit it. Quite a few guys in the UK do the facelift airbag cover mod.

Main differences between this wheel and the Audi TT one I had are:
- Thicker wheel with better 'hand grip' and more aggressive look. 40mm diameter compared to 35mm i think it is.
- Punched leather (goes with the RS DSG gearknob).
- Silver/Aluminium S/RS DSG paddles

Really enjoying the different feel it gives the car. The silver stitching goes with the RS3 gearshift boot and S3 handbrake cover I have which is a nice touch.

A couple of mini-mods..

42 Draft Design tips (Brushed Stainless Steel, Double walled). This finishes off the exterior nicely, although I might have to get them adjusted to fit into the bumper a little better at some stage. They sit slightly low.

Map/Dome light upgrade with Ambient LED lights. Pretty understated mod but makes a nice difference to the interior feel at night.

S3/RS3 Pedals and OSIR dead pedal cover. Pretty sure all Audi S/RS and Golf GTI/Rs all have these but its something you probably don't miss unless you don't have them. Makes a big difference to the look of the interior.

Also got a set of interior mats from Rubbertree.co.nz a month or so back. Originally got an OEM set but the silver piping didnt look right. These match the factory carpet nicely and have the OE mounting holes.

Cheers. I got the S3 Pedals from Tuning Fanatics on eBay. I wouldnt recommend them (sent wrong product initially then refused to refund my return postage - after initially agreeing in writing to).

I would recommend buying from BKS Tuning.

The dead pedal was from www.osirusa.com

Car looks great! Quick questions though. Where did you get your roof wrapped and how much did it cost? I'm looking to get that done, too. Was also wondering if I should wrap my spoiler along with it. Thoughts?
