Title: Servicing 6n auto
Post by: cpncrash on May 18, 2010, 05:35:43 PM
Is changing the auto fluid on a 6n polo difficult? I've done it on older Auto's but I looked in my haynes manual and it tells me its a sealed unit that does not require servicing? Others have mentioned servicing them....

Can anyone let me know how this is done?

Many thanks :)

Its not a sealed unit and it most certainly needs servicing!
Idealy you need a hoist to do it on but honnestly to make things easier take it to auckland automatics.
6N auto's have a mesh screen filter that should be washed so there's no need to replace it.

Hi Vert,

Thank you for the reply, great to know.

I'm in ChCh and have easy access to a hoist so I would like to give it a go. Any idea on how you tell when its full of fluid? or how much it takes?

Many thanks

fill with 2 ltrs dextron3, start engine in neutral with drain bung out- keep filling till it starts to run out.
Wait till it stops running out (dripping is ok) replace drain bung and switch off job done.
I would service every 20,000ks.

Great info thanks :)

I take it the drain bung it the plastic red cap plug on the end the short tube coming off the lower part of the box? and it is filled from this point also?

no, drain bung is in bottom of pan.
Red cap thing is the filler.

Wow, okay cheers, I would have thought it would just all pour out of the drain bung if it was left off while running :) I'm sure it will all make sense when I get it up on a hoist and check it out

Thanks again

I would explain if I could be bothered  but just trust me instead.
btw, you need to take entire pan off and filter off to drain fluid, clean filter etc etc.
Longer you can leave it the more will drain out.

I would do another in 5-10,000ks and add a bottle of lubeguard.
Dirty black smelly oil? they usually are.

Hey john, just to clarify, these trans filters  dont need to be changed? just cleaned and re-used?

thanks (even after 100ks' of not being changed)

On a 6N Polo, no need to change just clean.
On a Golf always replace.

Big Ups to  Vert!

Just used this guide again on another polo and the result in performance of the trans is night and day!

will run another change after a few thousand kms as of course you can't get all the old fluid out first time
