Just wondering what the top of the market is. What would you pay for a '89 NZ New, 3dr, 16V with 110,000 k's? Close to showroom condition.
If you can find one why dont you ask the owner how much they would sell theirs for and thats how much one is worth.
Id say a really mint one in show room condition would get maybe 8 - 10 grand if it was the best in NZ and to somebody who had to have it.
is this about the mk2 nz new gti on tm?

If i had a Mk2 16V I'd sell it for $1,000,000 - that's not what its worth.. A car is only worth what someone is willing to PAY for it.

Yes. The classified has now expired, was anyone else on here interested? I did a search and didn't see it discussed on this forum.
If its the one that was on Trade me it sold for $6,500 (not to me) but I did take a look at it-very nice example, excellent condition but a bit too expensive for me. If anyone has one a bit cheaper for sale let me know.
$6500 for that mint white one is a good deal IMHO. I'd like to see immaculate NZ new gti's going for around $8000 because I'd like to think that mine will be worth that one day, not that I can ever see myself selling it
Interestingly enough $8,000 was the asking price on the classified listing. Mint MK1's are becoming collectors items in the UK, do you think the same will happen with MK2 GTI's?

Over time, the Mk1 GTI is the original though.
I get the feeling that the MK2's are closer to the 1's than they are to the 3's though. Is that the way everyone here considers it? Looks, weight etc.

I only said $8000 because that's how much was on that one, and that's the most I've seen one go for since I've had mine.
I think the mk2 is closer to the mk1 than it is to the mk3. The mk3 is where they started to lose the path a bit.
IMHO the mk2 16v is the best, but just as many people believe the mk1 to be the best. I'd say that will be a never ending argument.

I paid $6,500 for it and I though I'd paid to much but the feedback I'm getting here is reassuring. The wife gave me a funny look but that could be to do with the number of cars we now have as much as the price paid.

Only 1200kgs ???. dude it's a hatchback, a fat overweight hatchback with even more weight over the front axle making it handle like a pig. The rear suspension is simply inadequate for the size of the car. The Mk4 R32 goes some way to solving the problem but that's a totally different car.

Yes I have an SA import as well as the car I bought that this thread relates to. Not quite sure what to do with it now, it needs a fuel pump to get a warrant and has a little rust, I own 4 vehicles at the moment so will probably sell it. Will check your post, cheers.

I just looked on the same website that I got the 8vs weight from and it says the 16v is ~960kg

Would that weight be for a big bumper 16v? I don't know much about Mk2s but where do you find 55kgs between a small bumper 8v and a small bumper 16v? Any extra safety equipment or anything?

Hmm..to back to this question. I suppose one good way of finding out is that if you had $6000 to spend, could you buy a Mk2 GTI? If so, could it be for less or more? Where would you start for a decent model, not rusty/clapped out and costing a fortune to get on the road safely. I've got no idea what mine is worth to sell, I know what it's worth to keep lol...

At Turners car auction last Saturday 3rd March, they had a MK2 GTI, silver, about 150km's, body was good, upholstery good, bumpers crap. Gear box linkages needed adjusting. It had original mag wheels and full mag wheel spare. Overall condition (excluding bumpers) 6/10.
It was passed in at $2000. The seller wanted $3000. It still may be for sale.
What space & time did those bumpers come from!!!!
The 80's were cruel for body kits :laugh: Anyway at least it's NZ new. The Saab 900 on the left looks interesting :o

It was a 5 door, 8 valve, totally original throughout, upholstery was good.
