Title: Saving A Full Spec 3 Door VR6
Post by: LouieP on December 19, 2019, 11:20:54 PM
I've always wanted one of these and I even expressed that in my previous MK4 thread. I never finished my MK4 thread but the car was slammed on KW coilovers, I drove around with it until I was stopped at a RBT checkpoint and was questioned about what the car was lowered on. They had a quick look under and confirmed it was coilovers. I had no cert but the officer was nice enough to not sticker me. She told me to get it certed or remove it and sent me on my way. I never removed it neither did I cert it. I was on the edge of getting rid of the car anyway but paranoia was kicking in so the car was put back to stock and sold off. I was happy that I sold it for more than i paid for it 4 years earlier. I replaced it with a MK7 GTI which will hopefully be hybrid turbo'd by the end of 2020. Stay tuned  :police:

Back onto this - I had lost interest in finding my dream spec VR as frankly it had been 5 years since I pulled the plug on the search. I was under the impression that they did not exist anymore. The ones that did come up for sale were ex-enthusiast cars (tidy, expensive and modified which I did not want). This came up however and it would have been rude for me to not snatch it up. I believe this may be the last full spec original 3 Door VR6 left and also the last that was sold in New Zealand in 1996. It all started when I took my morning 10 minute break at work when this came up for sale on VASK fb page. I immediately sent Qualitat a message and we exchanged a few messages before things went quiet. I then got a response that this car was now sold. Bugger! A few days went by and Ryan from Qualitat contacted me to say that the buyer had pulled out.I shot over first thing in morning, checked it out and took it for a spin. I was surprised at how original the car was with all the OG Blaupunkt gear in it, it had belonged to an older couple for the last 15 years or so. I've also never been in a VR6 so quiet LOL. I made Vahn an offer and did an immediate bank transfer, I came back later that night and fetched it as I still had to get to work, whoops.

I dont have big plans for this but as the title says, I will be giving it a second shot at life and it will be back up for sale after I tidy it up. The theme is OEM+ but i will de-cone the airbox and possibly build a 2.5" catless Borla exhaust for that noise  >:D

1996 NZ New Volkswagen VR6 3 Door - Sold originally by Giltrap w/full dealer service history until 2013
Heated Leather, Sunroof, Manual

She needs some love but nothing I can't sort out over the upcoming Summer. Some key things wrong with her are:

- Drivers side window not working
- Cosmetic marks and scratches for a vehicle of its age. I will 2 stage machine polish her and ceramic coat later down the road
- Slight chain rattle although i think this is early stages as it is very minimal

Nice one! It's very likely to be one of the last few sold in NZ. Agree that there's not many good ones left, most were ruined by youngsters as their values dropped.

My mate has a super tidy NZ new red 3 door manual with leather and sunroof. Currently stored. He's been working away at tidying it up over a long period of time; engine rebuilt and repainted. Only mods are a custom exhaust, H&R cup suspension and OZ Ultraleggera wheels, but have the original 15" wheels still.

Love the VR6

I have a 95 NZ new 3 door in Red. Completely standard apart from radio. I'm in the process of tidying it up - possibly looking for a leather interior as cloth trim looking very tired now. I hope the project goes well.

Good work, i went and had a look, and it was too much of a project for me. So i hope you can give it a new lease of life! It definitely deserves it, and too many have been butchered and 'riced' over the years so it will be amazing once you are done with it 8)

Thanks mate! Agreed, majority of the golfs are being ruined by youngsters because of the low prices especially the mk5. I did not want that to happen to this one too.

Nice! I'd like to hear more about this custom exhaust. Do you have any pics? Maybe we should get a '3 Door Appreciation Thread' going for all the platforms on here

Nice! Get some pictures up. IMO, I would look into the GTI recaros which are comfy as heck and also look nicer. The 5 door version folds forward too so they are perfect  :D

Cheers, I thought the same too (too much work) but then i realised that is how these end up being stripped for parts or at Zebra. Someone has to bite the bullet right

I've been a bit busy recently but managed to get something done. It was time to de-cone the airbox  >:D. I opened up the airbox to find a lot of dirt and...dead bees, infact these bees were all over the car!

The filter looked nasty and was filled with leaves, dirt and yup you guessed it more bees. I did not have a new filter on hand but did blow this one out. Will order a performance panel filter from the UK in the new year

After much struggle the cone came out

Whilst the airbox was out, it made sense to give the MAF a clean with some MAF cleaner. I used the stuff below and it really helped smooth the idle especially between gear changes. I did the same on my MK4 and there was a noticeable difference with the way the car drove. No additional hp though. Will tackle the throttle body once i get a gasket.

Before

After (Looks the same tbh but check the container out)

Cleaned the airbox out and put everything back together. The internet tells me that the ducting pipe that goes into the airbox is pointless and that it should be removed. Is this correct? It doesn't help that photobucket did the dirty and now the older DIY threads on the vortex are picture-less

Nice work, good to see it being saved as you just don't see them anymore.
I've still got a new performance filter at work for one of these, cheap to help your project along.
Nice to see on the forum btw.

don't believe everything you read on the internet, that duct will bring cold air to the intake, many mods put the intake in the under bonnet area where temperatures are much higher

this site is a pain to search and navigate, but there's a wealth of practical, tested modification advice, he flow tested a bunch of factory air boxes and filters with a manometer and decided that most factories knew what they were doing

Thanks for the website. I agree that the ducting will bring through more cold air through to the airbox but I have not looked at where the ducting is coming from. I will probably remove that ducting and replace it with my own sort of custom version.

The big clean...

Interior

Just like with all the cars I purchase, it goes through a strict cleaning regime. According to the receipt in the back seat the last time this car was vacuumed was circa 2009. There was dirt and old droppings of food everywhere.

I started off with the boot

Some sort of oily residue inside the spare wheel. Some more dirt and more bees.

The boot was vacuumed and worked with some APC and a detail brush to get into all the nooks and crannies
(https://i.imgur.com/HYOVLFX.jpg)

After:

The spare wheel was washed and the tools were wiped down before they went back in the car
(https://i.imgur.com/xrPNOzz.jpg)

Boot done!

I then moved on to the cabin. Easiest way to work through the inside was to remove all the seats so this was done first.

Who knows what the heck this was! Looks like a piece of the Simpsons donut. It was stuck to the carpet and clinging on for its life
(https://i.imgur.com/P58g5gu.jpg)

and a note pre-smartphone era  Sounds serious!

The rear cleaned up and all the plastic trim wiped down. The carpet looked good as new.

Leather seats

I left the seats out in the sun for about half an hour to tighten it up. They were then vacuumed up before the APC was diluted further for the clean
(https://i.imgur.com/0fk2aos.jpg)

Seats were worked with a detail brush

A bit of a comparison - uncleaned vs cleaned
What a difference !

Door cards were done the same way
before:

after:

How my towel looked after all the plastics were wiped down. Left is how it would looked before I started  :o

I put the car back together and dressed all the trim with Carpro PERL diluted 5:1 for that new car look. I did not get any pictures as yet but i was blown away with how many years the clean took off the interior. Ill whip out my camera for the shots in the near future. I still have to detail the exterior so will get it all done at once.

Till next time

Not a big update but an update nonetheless. I still have not gotten fully stuck into it as yet but the small bits here and there really help things move along

Stopped by Mr Kanters to pick up an air filter and reflector blank

The new blank isn't sitting perfect but ill be removing these anyway for the exterior detail so i'll sort it out then
(https://i.imgur.com/Kbyltv1.jpg)

Also a tidy little Mk3 GL at Zebra Manukau donated its accelerator pedal

I initially bought a throttle body gasket to change while i was here. It looked like someone tried to take it off and rounded off the last scew >:(. I just ended up cleaning it while still attached. If anyone wants a gasket, pm me. selling cheap

Before - wasnt too bad
(https://i.imgur.com/lwTJ5k5.jpg)

After - revs are now a lot smoother
(https://i.imgur.com/HkV1puD.jpg)

There was some soy sauce that spilled on the rear boot mat so i gave it water blast which cleaned up real nice and did the floor mats too.. I've been looking for some second hand replacements but the NZ New cars came with a black more premium look material opposed to the Jap light grey color. I knew i would never find a NOS set so made do with what I had.

It also looks like someone stitched another mat over the drivers mat for some reason. It looked horrible, after closer inspection there was actually nothing wrong underneath. I got the stanley knife out and cut it off.

The interior is almost perfect (for a 24 year old car). Just the headliner left and I would really like to find a MK3.5 cabrio 3 spoke steering wheel. If anyone knows where I can get some 3-4mm foam backed headliner fabric (or a cabrio wheel  ;)) that would be really helpful

Thanks

The best material by far comes from a guy in Wellington but Waikumete upholsterers stock it.
Do NOT use spray can glue, it's useless.
Need to use a proper spray gun to apply the contact glue.

The cars warrant expired last week so started doing some prep. The wipers were shot so some new ones ordered from Qualitat. Had no idea they stocked the Bosch ones as i always bought their cheaper tridon branded one.

Gave her a quick wash and dressed all the tired trim with some trim dressing.

Pre Wash:

Also deleted the rear wiper while i was there as I never needed them on any of my golfs. They clean the rear end pretty nicely
(https://i.imgur.com/FrTB7PC.jpg)

En-route to the testing station - but first some 98  >:D
(https://i.imgur.com/Axe6qDM.jpg)

VTNZ was dead quiet, must have been due to the anniversary weekend. I walked in, paid the fee and the inspector started the with the vehicle. In and out in like 20 minutes. I sat in the waiting room like i was in the waiting room of a hospital, it was either going to be good or very bad. The guy came back and said everything was okay with only the exception of the front tires down to 2mm tread and some minor engine leaks.

Life for 6 more months! Not what i expected for a newly purchased project car. Fingers crossed we will be looking at an engine overhaul soon and an exhaust build

Also scanned the car for the first time yesterday and got this. Anyone have their vr throw this code? If i replaced the cam position sensor and speed sensor would my problem go away or is this timing problems? Car does feel hesitant and down on power in the lower revs

I believe the engine speed sensor code shows when the engine isn't running, and is therefore completely normal.

The others, I'd keep a record of, then clear to see if they return.

I replaced my camshaft position sensor when my engine was fully rebuilt, so I couldn't say what change it made alone.

Try clearing the codes, take it for a drive and then scan it again with the engine running.

If the code returns, it could be the sensor, the wiring, or the timing: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/00515

Question for the VR guru's,

I am currently in the process of getting all the bits to do an engine refresh soon and noticed that there are two chain kits for a vr6. An 'early' double chain top vs the 'later' single chain top. The switchover is apparently build date 09/96 however mine was registered 02/96 and is an OBD2. Will i have the single chain or double? Do all OBD2's regardless of its build date have single chain? Also tried to look for a sachs clutch kit but locally i can only find the valeo kit? Anyone know a source. Last resort will be europe otherwise. Cheers gents

99% sure your car is OBD2 with the single chain, however it's easier to tell by looking at the throttle body.

I made a topic on the visible difference a while ago, but I see photophucket has ruined the pics, you might still be able to see: www.vask.org.nz/index.php/topic,13030.0.html

I also asked this because apparently engine code 217xxx and above is single chain and everything below is dual. Mine is 187xxx. Also seen a few obd2's on facebook with dual chains

Soon after some parts started arriving at my office. A box full of goodies from Harry's Euro (mostly maintenance) and an aftermarket muffler for my exhaust build (we'll get more into that when the time comes)

New regulator and a window motor courtesy of Harry's Euro and 80Vert

Sorted and drivers window working flawlessly ;D

I also ordered all the parts required for a complete engine refresh and are currently en-route to NZ

- Timing Chain kit and all gaskets from UroTuning
- Sachs VR6 Clutch kit and new slave from VWheritage
- Complete cooling kit from Germany

I drove the car for the first time in a while and although i just cruised around with the sunroof tilted and windows down, it put a big smile on my face. I missed being able to hang my arm out the window, its pretty hard to do in my MK7 with the door lines going up of these newer cars.

Once the rest of the car is sorted cosmetically we will revisit the engine with some upgraded cams and a lovely MSD ignition conversion

Its been a while since the last update but all parts came into NZ. I thought about giving the engine refresh a go myself however after reading on the vwvortex and watching youtube videos, I realised I was biting off more than i could chew!. In the end I asked a family friend to take the job on for me.

The main reason for this job were the noisy chains. So we did the following:

-Sachs clutch, machined flywheel and a new slave
-Complete chain kit with all new gaskets
-Complete cooling kit including a new waterpump, thermostat housing etc (the works)

When the gearbox came off we realised the headgasket was cracked on an edge. While we were there, it made sense to pull the head off, it was thoroughly inspected and a complete head gasket set was installed with obviously some new head bolts.

i still would like to sort a few sensors here and there so the engine bay area is still in the works. I am just happy that the major stuff is sorted

Some pics below:

Rusty coolant system. System was obviously flushed after new parts installed

Clutch looked in decent shape but it was changed nonetheless
(https://i.imgur.com/VzBRUNF.jpg)

Once the engine bay is all sorted will give it a detail and return it to its original state.

I am working through the pandemic so will work on this during the weekend and with current lock down there's plenty of time to get stuck into her . Unfortunately with this happening so suddenly, I will have to make do with all the parts I have and wait till everything goes back to normal.

My mission currently is to get the car mechanically in tip top shape. I had a new fuel filter on hand which was swapped out. Car looked like it still had the original one from new. What meant to be a 10 minute job turned into an hour, it was a nightmare getting the bracket off.

Old one out
(https://i.imgur.com/yBbGKPc.jpg)

New one in with some new hose clamps
(https://i.imgur.com/akmgpRp.jpg)

I then started to sort out the codes that have been popping up on VCDS. One was the cam position sensor and the other was the o2 sensor. I first checked the wiring and all looked ok. I then removed the cam sensor to find it was covered in sludge, it was cleaned up and thrown back in. Took the car for a quick blat around the block and the low end hesitation is now gone. I need to get under the car and do the same with the o2 sensor before buying a new one. I forgot to get a photo unfortunately.

The car was also throwing an intermittent code for the front left abs sensor. Took the wheel off to find the wires partially out (it was obviously taped up and someone had been here before). Soldered it up and cleaned the sensor while i was there.

I then started removing all the stickers that were on the car. They were well cooked from the NZ sun so werent looking too nice anyway. One by one i hit them with a heat gun and peeled them off. I am not a sticker guy and wont put any sticker on my car however I had vask sticker made to my taste by one of the guys on facebook which is more subtle. Inside print, metallic silver, smaller and just the rings with no writing. I will throw that on when the car is worthy  >:D

I then went to the engine bay and pulled the vacuum out and blew out/sucked in all the dirt dust sitting the crevices. I will give it a full engine degrease when I detail it. I also need to buy a new coolant bottle so will bang it out all at once then.

I then started cleaning under the arches. One by one i went around the car and tackled them with Chemical Guys orange degreaser and a variety of brushes. Will revisit to paint the calipers oem silver in the future. Arches were then finished off with Chemical guys barebones underbody protectant. This dries to the touch so it should not attract dirt

Waterblasted first to remove all the loose dirt then soaked in degreaser and let sit
(https://i.imgur.com/46AitkW.jpg)

Getting in there with a wheel woolies large brush and tire brush

All rinsed and wiped down with a towel
(https://i.imgur.com/LnCmUw3.jpg)

Applied some dressing, let it soak in for a few minutes then excess wiped off with a microfiber towel
(https://i.imgur.com/2yZjn4t.jpg)

Cleaned the rear of the barrel while i was there. Did not go full on with it as these will probably end up being wof wheels only in the future.

Wheel back on and ready to be lowered to the ground. Looks like new doesnt it?

I also then pulled off the side markers to find the tabs on them were both broken and they glued into the fender with some black silicone ???. I will probably just glue them back on as new genuine ones are $$$. I gave them a quick polish with Meguiar's plastx. They came out great and removed the faded layer over the top. Did not get a before

Will now see what I can sort out next weekend. Really regretting not getting the headliner fabric!

Perhaps ditch the jubilee clips on the fuel pipe when lock down is over and use some proper fuel clips?

Not much of an update but did manage to make contact with the original owner and previous owner up north who cleared up a few things for me. $76k would have been a lot to drop on a golf back in 96 but i guess something like this in that era would have been a gentleman's hot hatch. I think the base price of a new 3 door VR6 was $67k so $10k worth of options...Nice

A shame about the purchasing order though. It would have been nice to add it to the already massive folder of receipts i put together for it

My mate Scott (harry's euro) up in Orewa has the exact same 3 door VR6 as yours and that's his baby, he's been hunting for a while to get that car. I'll see if i can get a photo of it. I remember when i still lived in South Africa this was one of my dream cars to own but never got around to it before moving to NZ.

We should do a R32 / VR6 photo shoot one day when your car's finished.  :D

Haha yup! I hope it was well looked after when you took ownership. MK4 R32's will soon be cheaper than they already are!
Title: Re: Saving A Full Spec 3 Door VR

Euro cars in particular here in NZ lose value more than most other countries simply because most people here do not see a car as a special thing, its only transport for them,it doesn't matter how the car looks as long as it goes. Hence so many cars around with spider webs and mold growing everywhere. Most people here would rather spend their money on social activities instead of cherishing a car. (not taking a go at any kiwis here, just an observation). These same VR6's and mk4 R32's in Australia and most other european countries still hold value "relatively" well.

Location location location.

Time to sort the tunes out...Hope everyone is all well and okay? As much as i love the look of the OG Blaupunkt HU and how period correct it makes the car look, it is pretty useless. The screen is partially dead and some buttons don't work. I did not throw it away and it will eventually get sold with the car. Some of you are probably wondering why the heck would you put a radio in when you could listen to that VR noise  ::) >:D

Pulled the unit to find what i love the most about NZ New cars, ISO harness!. The head unit i was using came out of my previous mk4 and at the time i purchased an ISO to Kenwood adapter so easy peasy. I realised i needed one of these antenna adapters for euro cars so one was purchased online and it was posted out to me.

Harness hooked up and all ready to go back in

I removed the glovebox to route the microphone for the HU neatly through the car for an OEM fitment.

Fitted and working great. A modern touch to an older car. Bluetooth to connect to spotify and also built in hands free which is all we need nowadays
(https://i.imgur.com/efkZyaV.jpg)

I quickly learnt how crap the factory speakers are...I guess that's one more thing to add to the list and maybe a sub in the boot.

It's been a long time but lets see if we can get back to this

I wanted to give the ignition system a refresh as i think upon taking ownership of a VR, it should be amongst the first things done.

BBT leads from Qualitat, NGK platinum plugs ex UK, Meyle coolant temp sensor, Meyle serpetine belt and a Bosch O2 sensor (confirmed dead via obdeleven). I still need to find a cam sensor as the one i had coming from Latvia got lost during lockdown.

Plugs definitely need to be replaced
(https://i.imgur.com/zS7hvah.jpg?2)

I heard through the grapevine that a 99 MK3.5 Cabrio was arriving at Zebra Onehunga. I woke up early and shot over to pick up something I've been wanting from this car for mine. If you've been following the thread you'll know what that is ;)

I wanted to see what the paint was like under all those years in the NZ sun with no protection. I whipped out my DS6 pro and did a quick one step. Came out great but then we went into water restrictions...the car never got a once over unfortunately but really motivates to continue the refresh

It's been a long time since an update on this and frankly I've been more interested in driving it in the top half of the tachometer than tidying it up  >:D. If you still have one these by now, you'd know the rubber and plastic components in the shifter have turned to crumble pie. It was time to change that.

The parts needed where

1. Dieselgeeks Cabin Side Bushing
2. Dieselgeeks Super Slider
3. OEM Shifter Cable Holder

First was to do the Cabin Side Bushing

Unfortunately you have to cut the raised sheet metal on the tunnel to slide the pin out. A dremel was used for this job

The old bracket out and in not too bad shape but the ridges were worn down and thats what caused the side to side and up and down movement

New bushing on and back in the car

The slider was a little broken but it was changed anyway

Old one broken off which took more effort than I thought.

Super Slider on and ready to go back in.

The old cable holder had no visible breaks but was very flimsy compared to the new one. That must be from all the heat in the VR engine bay

Job done!

How does it feel? Excellent! Its like a new car again, the gears are crispy smooth and notchy in a good way.

I initially wanted to do the 02J shifter conversion but its too much work and after you're done, you still end up forking out $300 ish for Dieselgeeks short shifter. This is very OEM like and and helps keep the car feeling period correct

To be honest, for a modified mk3 like yours, I would just look into a 02J conversion with a short shifter. Links are below and part number for the cable holder.

Heard 'do you still own that vr6 bro' at todays vask meet and to be honest, I forgot I had one myself  .

I started focussing on the interior, there wasn't much work it needed but they were time consuming.

Headliner was starting to block my view in the rear view mirror so that needed to be sorted out asap! It was an absolute eye sore and it was quite funny seeing it touch the wof inspectors head.

Wish I had the progress photos but it was done so long ago, its been misplaced. Looks mint now though

Next up was the rear door card inners. They were separating from the panel and would flop around when driving or closing the door and it was the most annoying thing ever.  Door cards were removed, old glue removed and liquid nails to get the job done properly

Back in the car and looking fresh!

Although the car is 26 years old, it appears that only the drivers seat was used as the rest of the seats were in immaculate shape. The bottom bolster on the drivers side was split and and the top vinyl had a nice tear and was getting worse. I sent to off to the upholsterer to sort out!

Got the seat back and thought it would be rude to just throw them back in so did some more cleaning. A friend had a bissell spot clean so picked that up and went to town.

A naked interior before the cleaning got down

Some carpet cleaner and a brush attached to a drill to loosen up the years of dirt that had gotten trapped in the fibres

Also removed all the old grease out of the tracks and new grease put in
(https://i.imgur.com/v1tSIaO.jpg)

After, left to dry overnight
(https://i.imgur.com/dl0LgBt.jpg)

Next morning after a vacuum. Seats ready to go back in
(https://i.imgur.com/ZhJ4xaN.jpg)

Then i found something that I purchased yonks ago. Some door handle seals
(https://i.imgur.com/VS1WI0Z.jpg)

Cleaned up the and polished the scratches out
(https://i.imgur.com/yzOdzmW.jpg)

Much better
(https://i.imgur.com/WPGAi4E.jpg)

Interior. Done! Some new premium mats were ordered from RubberTree. Such good quality and a good turn around for a custom set of mats. I would really like to get the weighted Black Forest Industries golf ball knob so it may be purchased in the near future.

Continued with making my shifts extra crispy. Picked up some 034 Motorsport shifter bracket bushings to replace the tired old nice. Real nice billet pieces.

Mind the dirty engine bay. Will tend to that once everything I want to replace is replaced.

Old pieces out and in not too bad shape

Bushings in and the bracket cleaned as much as I could. Wish they could stay exposed but a washer goes over it and covers it up

Fresh fluid in the box too to replace what looks like 26 years old. The shifts feel amazing! Nice and notchy but not race car level. Not sure why I didn't do this sooner

Was treated to a nice surprise. A screw in my side wall and I'm pretty sure its one of my screws that made its way onto the driveway. A bit guttered because this tire size is not very common. I decided to throw on a pair of chinese Hifly's

At my last wof which is looking to be early 2021 now :-[, I was told by the wof inspector my rear bearings had some play in it. Unfortunately on these cars the bearing is pressed into the rear discs. It was only right I did it all

Rear discs masked up
(https://i.imgur.com/WPxiVyV.jpg)

First light coat
(https://i.imgur.com/DGt9vyT.jpg)

Did 4 coats in total, this was my last
(https://i.imgur.com/AseFiWj.jpg)

Tape removed and ready for the bearing race to be pressed in
(https://i.imgur.com/8uxnGmj.jpg)

Masked up the car and started painting the calipers. After 4 or so coats
(https://i.imgur.com/Yk0bp2a.jpg)

Masking removed and ready for some new bits. I hate when people paint their pads but I wasn't too fussed as they were being replaced anyway.

The disassembly begins
(https://i.imgur.com/M5NpzIa.jpg)

After scrubbing the dust shield of what looked like 25 years of built up brake dust... I kid you not this took more than 40 minutes. Even some of the strongest diluted degreaser was not shifting it

Sprayed a few light coats of zinc it, no idea how long this will last but we will see
(https://i.imgur.com/ZHSsP0U.jpg)

There was still some life left in the pads but I was reading some good stuff about Black Diamond pads over in the UK and demontweeks stocked them. It worked out to around the same price as buying some pads from BNT so was a no brainer.

ABS Ring cleaned and back on
(https://i.imgur.com/nIyESvn.jpg)

Went to town cleaning the stock wheels and they came out fantastic. They were de-tarred and iron fall out remover was used on them. Car back on the ground with new rear tires
(https://i.imgur.com/PMfnO2V.jpg)

I am also looking for two lug nut covers and a couple of vr6 engine screws. Mine have taken a walk somehow and I would love to buy them off you if you have some lying around.

Picked up some bits from another Vask member today and realised midway through the convo that this needs an update. I was leaking oil on the driveway and a quick look underneath revealed her leaking from the common spots. New oil filter housing gasket, oil sensors, oil cooler gasket and a new sump gasket ordered. I then got lucky and found the last new sump locally so snagged that up.

Old oil drained and looking very dark I must say

Housing scrubbed thoroughly, new sensors on and a new gasket installed

Oil cooler unbolted and both gaskets done.

New oil filter and topped up with Shell Helix Ultra 5W40. Been watching her over the last couple of weeks and she's leak free. The Bentley manual that Vask member Pristle donated came in handy this time round.

Quite a bit has been happening with this in the last 1-2 months to get her ready for the summer car meets and cruises.

The car kept on throwing codes for a bad O2 sensor since I got it. I have been clearing it occasionally and it would just come back. I never felt like it was an issue as the car drove fine. The plan is if the parts are available, replace it with new. I mean the car is going to be 27 years old in February!

Some scanning going on. This was after i disconnected the O2 to see if the code was different as I thought it may have been a loom issue. Better safe than sorry
(https://i.imgur.com/ul1FC1E.jpg)

Old one clipped at the wires and a o2 sensor tool used to unbolt it.

New one in, codes cleared and they have not come back! Car is now code free. Happy Days  :D

Boxes on boxes started arriving from Rock Auto, FCP Euro and Latvia at the office

There was around 25-30 door dings all over this vehicle and a huge dent in the front drivers side guard. Jeff from Dent Dragon was commissioned to remove all and he did a fantastic job. I highly recommend him

Got the car back from the mechanic...yes, you heard right...the mechanic. My back has had enough of this thing. To sum it up, this is what was in the boxes in the previous post.

Rear end
Rear beam bushings - Lemforder
Handbrake cables x2 - Dorman

Front end
LCA bushing replacement - Front R32 Solid bushings / rear standard replacements - Lemforder/Rein
Complete Tie Rods with new boots - Delphi Technologies / Beck/Arnley
Ball Joints - Mevotech
Front Anti Roll Bar endlinks -  Vaico
Front Anti Roll Bar bushings - Delphi Technologies
Steering Rack Bushing - Febi Bilstein
Both Inner and Out CV Boot replacement - Rein

Engine Mounts
Black Forest Industries Stage 0.5 mounts w/ G60 transmission mount

Fluids
Brake fluid completely replaced
Coolant flush and replaced with G13
Power Steering Fluid replacement

Fresh warrant after nearly 2 years  :police:

Unfortunately when the mechanic took apart the drivers side inner CV boot the whole thing came apart so a new inner CV was put in.

I was a little skeptical on getting poly engine mounts at first but after joining a few Australian Mk3 groups on facebook, it turns out a lot of them were running them in their vr and they said it was super smooth and the perfect match. I somewhat agree with them. They are amazing

Spring Jamboree was approaching that weekend so Saturday was spent pampering her. The paintwork on her has still not been touched as I had other priorities. I gave her a wash, clay and threw on an oily concourse show wax.

We made it and I was quite shocked but stoked that she took out second place in the MK3 category. There were many other cars out there that were in pristine shape however it certainly feels good to be rewarded for all the work that has gone into this car in the past few months

My car was definitely one of the few older golfs that were stock and the drive to the show with sunroof open was music to my ears. Also have noticed that there are very few vr6's with sunroofs left in NZ

This car is still not close to where I want to have it in the next couple of months. Till next time.

I've been daily driving this since getting it back and its been fantastic. A little expensive to run with current fuel prices and the lack of self control on the loud pedal.

The engine bay was filthy and I am very sure its never been washed before. Now that everything is sorted out mechanically, there was no reason to put the engine detail off any further

I started off by completely stripping out the engine bay meaning the battery was removed, all engine covers, the airbox and intake boot.

This is what we were left with, lots of sludge, dirt and grime:

All electric connectors were covered up with tin foil, plastic bags and a rubber glove. I placed an order with Volkswagen Classic Parts.de couple months ago for some bits that were not readily available and one of them was the screws that hold that hold one of the covers over the coil pack on.

Multiple degreasers and brushes were used to get the result needed and a total of around 4-5 hours. The engine bay was a a lot dirtier than I expected.

Bay put back together. Engine cover painted VHT Wrinkle black, some Bremi US spec MK4 12V leads and a new NGK coil pack since my current one had a crack that was causing some low speed misfires. Also threw on a hot air intake for the noise. If anyone has a heatshield or something similar please let me know.

Quite happy with the car at this stage however can definitely tell the shocks/springs are definitely tired. If anyone has a mild drop spring shock combo, I could be very interested.

Thanks for reading.

Cheers fella's. She's definitely come a long way since the beginning of the thread. Still a couple more bits to finish off in 2023 and she will all be set.

I remembered I had a Borla muffler sitting in my shed for a few years after picking it up from an older chap with a corvette. I popped by mastermind Dean at Mister Muffler in Pakuranga and had him fab up a full 2.5" off the factory downpipe back to some double walled tips.

Car sounds phenomenal! Its not loud, its super deep, there's zero drone at motorway speed and the perfect gentleman setup for this gentleman's hot hatch.

Quick little update on this. I still have the car and its been put to good use since the last post.

I sold my MK7 and reluctant to find a car that could replace that, this became my daily drive. An expensive task if I say so myself!

I thought I would try to see what was under the those swirls marks. Did a light one stage on the rear quarter only and it was decent. Only about 60% corrected in this photo. Will need to redo it again at some stage and possibly wet sand some deeper marks. Still plenty of other stuff on the list that are priority

I had a little star chip in my passenger side headlight lens, lucky for me I pulled a genuine hella one off a car from zebra about 3 years ago and lost it somewhere in the shed. It was found recently

Some compulsory 3 door full spec goodness

It was time for a new WOF so I stopped by a friends shop. If you are into Honda's you will know who they are. No issues apart from the sump leaking oil through the gasket. I can only imagine they softened after the replacement. Went back home and tightened up. Not a single drip underneath since.

With the cold winter approaching she was getting a little harder to start. Photo of the 11 year old battery. What a champ. Replaced it with a Neuton DIN55

Now comes daily duties. At the office car park

Fun times in traffic. Did get a few odd looks with people wondering what this old clapper is

Some 12v VR noise since its a sound that is never heard these days. Plenty of R32's about though!

https://imgur.com/tGSb1iB

My factory windscreen scuttle panel was destroyed from the NZ sun and its very much hens teeth finding a nice one with the rubber intact, VW Classic Parts also discontinued it. I was lucky enough to find a very tidy one when I swung by Pick A Part with another member. I cleaned it up quite nice and threw some solution finish on it

Got the windscreen replaced as I was not happy with the gazillion chip repairs on the current screen

Now for the good stuff  :police:

My factory knob was starting to look a bit tired and I wanted to preserve as much as I could of it in case I sold the car. Turns out in the months I was using the car on a regular basis, it was getting worn out quicker than normal. I was looking high and low for an Anniversary Jubi knob in Europe however mk3 part prices are out the gate. I was looking at 200 euro plus for a genuine one that would still require a new leather piece etc.

Wanted to cut the shifter rod down a bit but was only going to work with half an inch or something since the new knob was quite tall. I made the decision to leave it untouched. Sneak peak of the DieselGeek bushing's

A leather shift boot was ordered from Italy and the rest is history. Introducing the BFI weighted GSB knob with a period correct VR6 5 speed gel coin. So good  :-*

Till next time!

Small little update before the weekend

- Fender liner screws which were visible if you looked at the wheel were a bit rusty. Removed them, sprayed some rust converter and zinc coated it.

- My front caliper's were a little tired and I never painted them when I did the back. I also realised the retaining clip was missing on one side and it was the damn rattling I kept on hearing since I got the car. New retainer clip ordered from the EMD. Calipers painted and looking sweet

- Shocks were a little tired and squishy. Some new ones were added (will add more in a future post)

- HVAC bulb was old and only realised this recently when I tried to turn the AC on one night (never use it) and wondered why I could not see anything. Put a new one in.

Rides just like stock, maybe 15% firmer. The springs and shocks are well paired to each other. Not bouncy or crashy and absorbs any imperfections in the road. Second time buying Vogtland and do not think I will buy anything else in future.
