Title: 034 Engine mounts
Post by: John Stone on November 06, 2008, 06:42:52 PM
I've just ordered some track density 034 engine mounts for the old nail. Will be interesting how they behave - apparently the suppliers say there is an increase in noise! Crickey the car is loud enough already what with 4wd and noisey tyres too.
Been running the Hankook 225/15 50 dot rated tyres for a couple of months and will be into their second race meeting in a couple of weeks.
Will they last the summer???
I think not!!!

Not original Jem, ditched them about three years ago for some dodgy Audi "replacement" mounts which are crap. It was good to get the exhaust up off the subframe but the quattroforum peeps bag them as a short term fix and they fall apart quickly. Don't want to take the manifold off and repair again so it's preventitive maintainance.

I'll be interested to see what you think of them John. I replaced mine with VAG mounts 2 years ago and it certainly helped to take some slack out of the drivechain. of course thrashing around Puke has probably given them a hammering. can you get to the one under the exhaust manifold without removing said item?

what top strut mount are you running on yours John?

It'll be a fiddly job on the manifold side but should still be possible.
I'm running the Audi "blue" top mounts all round, if I was to do it again, I'd probably go to 034. There are rose jointed ones available ex UK but that would be overkill  ::)

Had my first drive with the new engine mounts tonight. Drive train noise and vibration are magnified, espcially at start-up and low speed. Interestingly the starter motor is really loud. Once the turbo kicks in there's no need to wind the window down to appreciate that distinctive 5 cylinder song. It would be OTT with a single box exhaust!
I'm not sure my dearly beloved is going to enjoy the drive to Auckland on Friday night, with a CD launch (Ivy Rossiter if anyones interested - shameless plug) gig to attend at The Vault that night the ears will be well thrashed before we clear the Brynderwyns.

Do you find they get quieter after a while of driving? The VF mounts on my Golf are harsh when you first start in the mornings, but slowly get better after 15-20 minutes driving. I think they warm up and get a little more compliant.  :-\

well, there was the street density mount too which is softer but still more resilient than the factory one...  probably transmit less vibration to the chassis...

Note that I said "better"  ;) i.e. They're liveable - but not OEM smooth by any means.  :D

Ok John give me a clue as to how to replace the engine mount under the turbo. Please!! Doing them on the new arrival and the passenger side is straught forward but can't figure out how to get to the nut on the top of the mount under the exhaust manifold. I've taken out the starter, removed the oil cooler and heat shield so I can get my hands in there but am really struggling to undo the nut.

Have you removed the airbox?
I got mine done by my friendly mechanic as he has a hoist and an engine support bracket. They shifted the oil cooler/ heat shield as you have. It wasn't their favourite job :o
Which mounts did you get? If it's the 034 mounts, winding the new locking nut on and off the thread a number of times to free it makes tightening up a lot easier - it's not likely to work loose after fitting.

Tell her to ignore the noise and concentrate on the beautiful Tutukaka scenery. Saw it on TV last night

Thanks John got there eventually.  ;)  Biggest problem was actauuly getting a spanner onto the nut. Ended up removing the intercooler hose and attacking it form the front of the mount. All good now. I've gone for Topran mounts that are made in Germany. They are the same spec as VAG mounts but are supposed to be better quality. We'll see about that. The car already has an H&R lowering kit on it with 034 top mounts and I've decided to do the sub frame mounts and the gerabox/diff mounts in OEM because I don't want it to be too harsh on the road. Let you know how it is when I'm done.
