Title: OEM+ 6n polo project
Post by: Pidge on February 08, 2015, 10:10:30 PM
Hi guys, my name is Luke I'm in Wellington and I thought it was about time I started a build thread.

When I sold my Legacy wagon last May I knew I had to get back into a VW. The biggest issue I had though was trying to decide what to spend! After a discussion with my partner and my dad back home in the UK I came to the conclusion that it was not justifyable to spend a lot on a car when I only commute 5km a day to work and back. This left me with a budget of circa 4k. Initially I was looking at broken, high km mk4 golfs on trade me, when one day during my search I found the little polo.

Old lady owner and only 81,000kms! Really tidy little car that drives well and costs NOTHING to run! Ended up giving 3k for it after a bartering session.

Colour is very love/hate personally I love it (clearly)

Looked like this when I picked it up...

First up I sourced and fitted 6n2 rear lights, looks much better in my opinion...

Then a pair of mint mk3 recaros came up locally that I couldn't refuse...

That pretty much brings us up to date so far, coilovers arrived this week but withholding their fitting until I find some wheels for it...

(https://www.vask.org.nz/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1188.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz418%2Fpidge53%2F2015-01%2F18898F3C-FAA4-4E01-A3F2-DCAC634FE066.jpg&hash=f0d54aa5106ea921dcaf776cda9d23e2ab773deb) (http://s1188.photobucket.com/user/pidge53/media/2015-01/18898F3C-FAA4-4E01-A3F2-DCAC634FE066.jpg.html)

If anybody has any OEM wheels I'd be really keen. Set of Seabrigs would be nice! Also looking for a mk4 convertible steering wheel for it if anybody can help?

I will keep the updates coming as my plans unfold further

Nice! I like the Colour! I have a set of rims that could work if you went for mk3 brake and hub upgrade...

D'oh can admin please move this to 'member's cars'

Looked into a 5x100 hub swap for ease of wheel choice but it's too involved for such a cheap daily ride. Got to machine hubs down to fit bearings.

Can you take the Japanese dealer sticker off thats below the light?

Haven't done it as I'm worried that the paint will be sun bleached underneath. Might have a crack at the weekend and get the machine polisher out.

for the sticker, a hair dryer and IPA should do the trick, heat and soften the glue, peel it off and then the IPA takes off any residue

can't argue with that, but I'm a fan of isopropyl alcohol (not for drinking)

mk4 GTI wheel will also work, so not absolutely require the MK3.5 Cabby wheel.

Nice colour on the polo btw. Looks better with replacement tail lights also.

Oh, I thought mk4 golf steering wheel is a different spline so wouldn't work?

Exact same spline. Was using a MK4 wheel on a MK2 to turn steering wheel. (Only late MK2 onwards to MK6 use same spline)

Just had a look and if I use the standard polo slip ring for the airbag I can pretty much fit ant wheel I want! Haha

Does anybody have a mk4 leather 3 spoke wheel for sale?

Quick update; gloss black 6n2 stubby door mirrors will arrive tomorrow, might colour code them but going to see once there fitted.
Also started collecting parts for my aero wiper conversion. Wanted to do it properly rather than cheap universal blades. After some research I'm using 2x 9n polo O/S wiper arms and 2x polo 9n N/S aero wiper blades.

Will update with pictures once bits are fitted.

Lupo GTI arms and blades probably would have worked as well.

Got my 6n2 mirrors on tonight, had to swap the plug off the 6n mirrors as the 6n2 ones have a heated function. Not too sure on them if I'm honest.... Think they need colour coding
