It's kind of a pain walking my daughter to school 1.2km then rushing 0.5km to the train then walking 1km to work when I'm paying for a car park opposite work. And I sold the Mazda 626, and the urquattro is fighting me on being ready and will likely break down and will be hard work in traffic. So we decided a second (third) car was required.
I set a budget and started looking on Trademe. The sheer number of incredibly tedious, mundane Japanese s**tboxes is impressive, but inbetween them are some interesting cars. My criteria were: something interesting, preferably manual, probably not Japanese, not silver. Melanie's choices were sensible, economical, preferably auto so she could drive it. A compromise was required
We test drove a bright blue manual Mini Cooper S, looked at some MX-5s, briefly considered a TT convertible. All very hairdresser.
Next was a Skoda Superb, BMW 330i, Volvo V70.
In the end we went to a warehouse place and wandered around. I liked a few non-sensible cars, Melanie didn't like them
We liked a blue Passat wagon (4x4 V6 with lots of toys) but it had some broken trims and a few things to fix. I went back to an Audi we'd looked at earlier. Silver But 3.2 V6 quattro Leather, dual climate, stereo with sub (and tape deck) and really solid, nothing obviously broken. So I bought it.
It sounds awesome, goes well (188kW), is comfy and sensible. And auto, which I admit is the sensible choice for commuting. It does have flappy paddles though.
The wheels are seriously kerbed and tyres are worn out. They're fitting 4 new tyres, probably Supercats or Linglongs or something but they'll have to do for now. Pick it up today. Excite.

Just one thing, i think the V6s had overheating issues :o
Not universal, but a known fault, was never a popular engine.
But if its only a city runabout it should sweet.
It sounds good though :D
Need to get the alignment done, and do an oil and filter and air filter change, check plugs if I can get to them, it's tight in there!
Parking sensors are intermittent, sometimes just a solid beep.
Stereo is great though, now I've burned some CDs like it's 1999.
Got some history from Powerhaus - a local Audi specialist whose sticker was on the windscreen.
They've done regular services but not the timing chain. Looks like they did check it though, need to go through the detailed invoices.
They recommended transmission fluid changes which don't appear to have been done, so I should be able to do that. And I think it's time for new brake fluid too. Lots of fun to be had :D
Also I need to get Rusty on the road :D
I think a mechanical warranty is a good plan. :D
Result! Thanks to the internets I now know where the cunningly hidden special manual slot is, so I do have a manual after all.
Now I can find out how that red button works on the door :D
does the cd changer and tape deck work ?
if so, win !

I haven't tested the tape deck yet.
looks tidy Rob
I know everyone hates the rear camchain V6/V8's but I have to say I've really enjoyed driving the wifes, same engine as yours but s-line wagon. They are very responsive engine I think.
Things we've had happen:
1. O2 sensor fail, normal wear and tear
2. Parking sensors keep popping inside bumpers, really annoying as pulling bumpers on these is a fiddle
3. Magnet fell out of tiptronic shifter mech, fiddly fix, but zero cost fix once I'd worked it out
4. Lock in ignition barrel broke, apparently common. $2.5k for a brand new one, paid a guy $750 all up to replace with second hand one as car was stranded in field and I had a busy week at work already
5. Seems to eat tyres, could be the wifes driving style
6. Pretty thirsty for city driving, very good out of town.
7. Small in the rear once your kids become teenagers
I'm not sure I would have found this if I hadn't found out about it online. This is where the manual lives.

Yeah, no need to go overboard, just check the fluids, filters and keep an eye on the temps.
Looks tidy and should be a reasonable runabout.
:)
It's in for a wheel alignment today. Don't want to scrub those Chinese tyres.
They're Cratos Roadfors - apparently one step cheaper than Supercats. As far as I can tell they retail at about $87 each. For 235/45/17s.
Need some new wheels and tyres I think.
I've got some factory 18" wheels off our S-Line that would like to get rid of.
Pretty kerbed from memory and no tyres, plus we are in Auckland so probably doesn't stack up for you.
Probably best to stick with 17s - I like the ride on this car. I have the urq for a harder ride :D Well, I will have. Soon.

I'd like to get some sort of Bluetooth link in there instead. The car was available with optional Bluetooth but I suspect retro-fitting would be a pain.
Got the wheel alignment done today. It wasn't far out despite the kerb grinding!
Next bit of fun - find out how bad those ditchfinder tyres are in heavy rain and wind. Wish me luck!
as this will be a city beater...
keep the crap wheels, shiny new ones will just get kerbed again
and get some decent tyres if the present ones prove to be useless at staying out of ditches.
:)

Something like that!!
It's in at the Toy Shop Wellington today for some sparkly new trans fluid and a brake fluid flush and change.
Next job is oil and filters, which I'll do myself. Checked at Supercheap and unsurprisingly none of the filters for this car were in stock.
It takes 6.5 litres of oil!
Check the oil level regularly between services. Ours sometimes uses a little bit and other times doesn?t use any.
Not talking huge amounts, maybe 500ml.
Changed the air filter and managed to dislodge the pipe to the throttle body in the process. Not sure it was on properly as that clamp was tight!

If she does, you'd just have to get another, like a 2015 A4 Quattro with 3L TDI. Or an S4
Changed the oil today. It was definitely due.

Must be a comfy ride with those 17" wheels and standard suspension. Mines got 19" DTM wheels along with sline suspension and RS4 sway bars, the ride is not what you'd call comfortable xD
Yeah it's good. Don't want to mess it up by changing too much :)
Not convinced by those cheapo tyres in the wet though, need to do something about that.

I drove on some (near new) $75 tyres on a borrowed car last month. I could not believe how bad they were, especially in surface water conditions. I guess they do no testing at all, just whack on a tread pattern that looks like it should work...
And NZ'ers just lap up cheap tyres.
Best get rid of them Rob. I wouldn't want my wife driving around on bargain basement tyres.
Yeah I need to find some un-kerbed wheels and put proper tyres on them.
Silicone key cover because the keys both looked scruffy.

Do you have a link to the site where you got the spoiler? I've looked on aliexpress at some which are roughly the same price but they don't offer to paint it. If I could get it at the same price and painted that would indeed be a bargain.
This is the one I bought

That has occurred to me. If I go to 18s it may look like an SUV :D
But I really don't want to spoil the ride. According to the internets, Vogtland springs are engineered to provide some drop but ride like OEM.
I just found out what my A4 cost new :-o

Not unusual. Apart from a few 'classics' high priced vehicles, especially saloons seem to suffer very high depreciation rates after the first few years.
I have my own theory as to why this is, but will decline to elaborate for fear of ruffling any feathers.

Hahaha my old B5 A4 1.8t MTM stage 2 had a retail of $90k in 1996 and i purchased it for $4k. The previous owner must have spent at least another $90k in 20 years - i had all the receipts!
Looked up the ur. This can't be right, surely? They were 25,000 GBP at that time. The exchange rate was about $3 to 1 GBP so maybe a 65% New Zealand tax was addded?

Lets call it a safety upgrade.
Well actually, I had a bit of a $75 tyre moment this morning when I pulled out fast from a junction then came off the throttle and almost understeered into a kerb.
I was going to leave the wheel/tyre purchase for a while but I didn't enjoy that. Pirellis coming on the new wheels.
This is awesome. A build thread thats not supposed to be a build thread ;D
I vote for AUDI/OEM wheels, and would probably be cheaper! Those DTM wheels are so cool...

i am old and yes, drop it (slightly)

What about when I want to go off-roading? :D
H&Rs would drop about 40mm I think. But it's not happening.
40 would be way too much

That's the upside of getting a silver one... I bought the exact some model as you a few months ago (though mine's a Japanese import).
First proper trip in my A4, 900km over the weekend, to a car meet in Taupo. The 3.2 quattro is a great road trip car. Easy power delivery, it feels composed and solid, comfortable, great stereo. Love it. And I saw an average of 8.8l/100km on the trip there, which is pretty good I think.

Yeap it's definitely made for touring. 8.8l/100km is about the average I've found if I do a bit of decent overtaking etc.
I do quite a few trips from the Manawatu to Wellington and usually get about 7l/100km (using 98 fuel in mine).
I think I'm going to have to give in and wash it tomorrow. It's covered in a layer of yellow pollen, and the wheels are embarrassingly dirty.
In other news, it's drinking a bit of oil - about half a litre per 1000km.

Welcome to the 1960's
Must be the case as they go up in Km?s?
I?ve had to top up my GTI for the first time ever. Maybe time for a different grade of oil?
that's within factory spec ?
Lent Growly Bear to a mate, and there was an incident. Not his fault, someone reversed out of a park without looking.
Waiting on insurance now.

Must have reversed with a bit of pace
Yeah he was pulling out of a car park entrance onto the road and this guy reversed fast out of the space. No time to brake.
Hate to say it but that will be a write off

Real shame if it is. Mechanically it's great, leather interior mint, has great stereo with factory sub, etc.
But add up new bonnet, wing, lights, bumper, grille, washer bottle, arch liner and other clips and stuff. Crash bar is slightly bent at the end, horns a bit mangled. But no rad leaks or anything like that.
Add to that paint, 100% they will write it off.
:(
In the bin because they can't make it all perfect and shiny again. Take the pay out, see if you can buy it back, take hammer to it and fit a new light. Bingo.
I hope they let you take the wheels off
I've already swapped back to the stock wheels just in case.

I'd agree... silver linings... you can put that back into the Quattro!!
$5800 repair quote assuming washer bottle is good and there's no hidden damage.
Waiting....

That's great news, I'm absolutely amazed they are repairing it as i've seen many cars written off for a lot less damage.
Now comes the near impossible part of getting the repairer to do a satisfactory repair which most are simply not capable of doing, on top of this Silver is one of the worst colours to match and really should be sprayed out / blended.
Love the under car lighting effect. Very Fast and Furious

Yep I was surprised too. Hope they are able to fix it properly.

I think I should keep it that way, maybe move the other fog light.
It all looks really good.

Bad news !
The cam chain tensioners appear to be failing, and the engine is making nasty rattly noises. Could go any minute and take the engine with it.
So that warranty I didn't buy would have been a good idea.
Repair cost is circa $4k becasue the engine needs to come out. There's a similar car on TM for $6250. So I'm considering taking an offer of $1k and walking away from it, buying a cheap runabout instead. Sad times.
That's bad luck
Got any pics?
Not going to try removing the engine and replacing the parts yourself Rob?
:(

Pretty sure you can replace the upper chain tensioners in place, seems too be the more common fault. I can assist with parts and or more info if you head down that route
I just don't have the time, equipment (and skills) to do it myself. I can't even find time for Project Rusty at the moment.
