Title: 2008 GTI Cup Edition
Post by: VAGHAG on November 24, 2012, 07:54:03 PM
Hey everyone,

This is my first post really, would really appreciate any advice on the Cup Edition that I'm about to buy. I used to own 2002 Seat Ibiza Cupra R in London, this looks like it's about the same spec. Is there anything I should watch out for on them? By the way I have owned evo 8's sti's golf gti's and this polo was by far the most fun I have had with my clothes on  :) loved every minute of it.!

there are less then 10 of these currently in NZ, that I am aware of.
The Cup edition had the body kit, and not much else. It's pretty much just a dressed up GTI.

The only thing I am aware of about these are the fact if you don't cool the turbo down properly after a spirited drive.
They have a tendency of loosening the bolts from the turbo to Exhaust manifold.

Otherwise, they are great cars. Look good, drive nicely and go like cut cats with a mere tune. But with intake, tune and turbo back exhaust you can push these out to approx 145-165kw's at the front wheels. So lighter then MK5, almost similar power figures and much better power to weight ratio,

The Polo GTI Cup Edition had a 132kw/180hp 1.8T, not the 110kW/150hp of the standard Polo GTI.

Thanks mate, yeah I was thinking the cup edition had a few extra horse's over the standard gti. Either way it was an absolute hoot to drive.

If its this one: http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/volkswagen/polo/auction-514204131.htm
I think its well over priced. If I were you I'd look into importing one from Japan.

Yes it is that one, comparing it to the other gti's that i have seen on trade me it does't seem that over priced does it ??

I would love to import my own especially a 3 dr model instead but I wouldn't know where to start ??

Thanks

fairly sure it's purely mapping nothing more for the 132kw, ain't it?

GLIDN is correct. It's only a mear tune difference and body kit. Slightly lower too. I have to say I do love the wheels!

I would not consider them any better than standard GTIs if you are planning to tune them. If you want to keep it factory then it's another story.
I do not think they are overpriced especially that black model if it's full genuine cup model. Even though the mileage is touch high.

Be sure to check out the mileage / service history, as apparently to change the mileage is as easy as buying a 50 pound software and plug in the number you like. Or switch the instrument panel.

Aside, Polo is the longest keeping car I have ever had. It sure is super fun. Driving Golf GTI back to back, Polo feels like a go kart, Golf more like a grand tourer in comparison.

Like GLIDN said, it's easy to get power out. Mine should be 140kw at wheels. If you want more then you go with a front mount intercooler which will net you another 7kw or so. 150kw at wheels is doable at reasonable cost.

Thanks Polo GTI, some really interesting and useful points.
Do you know at what k's should the cam belt have been ?

Cheers

What more could you want? 30hp more than a standard one, a nice body kit, nice wheels and lower suspension. I'd say it's worthy of being called 'Cup Edition' and certainly not just a dressed up GTI or just merely tuned. Apparently the brakes are bigger/better also, I can't confirm that though.

I like them 8)

Ill see what I can find. But at those kms at that price I think they are asking way to much.

In pic 13 the brakes don't look especially large under what I imagine are 17s? If they are bigger my guess is they'd be 312s from early S3 / Mk4 4Motions.

Not much point I'm afraid, the 288/312mm setup parts are in some cases cheaper to purchase locally then buy and ship from the UK.

Honestly I do not know, I do for some reason think its only the stock 288mm.
When popped pass and had a look at this car the brakes did not appear to look any different to the mk4 I was driving at the time.

They should be 312mm

well this is an easy way to tell, compare the MK5 312mm setup brake clearance to the polo cup edition gap. the polo really does look like it's only 288mm

This is by no means an absolute science, only reference. But if someone can get me a cup edition, chassis number I can confirm what size the brakes are.

My understanding is the cup comes with front 312mm discs so the parts are the same as the TT etc

I found some discs on ebay and ebay usa.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Front-Brembo-Brake-Discs-VW-POLO-1-8-GTi-Cup-Edition-01-/330568467930?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4cf76a85da

Looks like the ones.

Complete change of plan today, cancelled the cup edition, k's were too high and the dealer was a twat, cam belt had never been done at 157 k's and the dealer refused to do it. Time to walk away, bought a 3 door red gti polo instead 84 k's on it full leather full history one owner, pick her up on the weekend, anyone got any thoughts on super chips and bluefin ? Gotta get that bhp back up to cup edition 180 standards.:)

Congrats on the purchase :) Superchips have a very good rep. You shouldn't be disappointed. For the Money you could also look at APR i think the 2 are roughly the same price for the map *could be wrong* also another good well known company. Have a chat to polo_GTI he's used Superchips Bluefin and has a pretty quick Polo GTI.

Go APR, bluefin is ok but APR has more options down the line and you can have multiple maps etc (Valet, 95, 98ron etc)

I have Revo stage 2 for Polo GTI. Now cat less and full exhaust done its an absolute go kart. Fuel economy is still reasonable too. It's an aggressive tune but I love it.

Bluefin stage 1 on Golf GTI. Very smooth tune quoted 40-45hp gain so must be sitting around 240hp.

I think you made a right call on a nice one with less mileage and leather interior! Congrats!

Picked her up this afternoon from Eurocity VAG dealer in Napier, can I just say this firstly a huge thank you to Dwayne the sales manager their, how bloody nice, friendly, accommodating, negotiable down right human he was, I can't recommend him enough, the car was perfect as he described it was even fully polished and with a full tank to get me back to Auckland he even picked me and my mrs up from the bus stop in Napier , but as for the Auckland car yards I visited especially a certain one with a cup edition shame on you all !!! you clearly think that selling me a car is some how doing me a favour or that somehow I owe you my money your service attitude and inability to even pretend to be human left me more than a little disappointed. Anyway bitching over with,  the car is really lovely with leather, 3 door ( just like in pom land) sunroof, cruise control, fuel computer I think I have died and gone to VAG heaven.
Also would like to say a big thank you to the members in here for all the  good advice and also the guys at platinum vw, cheers.

Well let the tinkering begin. APR here I come !!!

Dwayne is a pretty good guy.
Less well known is that he raced at Bathurst in the 1997 2.0 race.

Nice car.....another member confirming my historical and current thoughts on dealership d^*#heads...what is with the attitude? Must be a serious case of over use of hair gel and aftershave seeping into the bloodstream and working its way to the small brain at the top. Back to the car...love Polo's and red suits well...have fun!
