Im wondering if anyone can recall what the NZ new B5 A4 MTM 286 BHP kit consisted off? Also were the cars imported built up from MTM or were the put together here in New Zealand?
What I can recall is an exhaust, carbon/kevlar airbox and a different turbo.
What else did the kit have? Different fuel pump?
Was the turbo the same as an RS2 turbo or a different spec?
Was the clutch upgraded?
Did the brakes remain standard?
How could the 286BHP model be spotted from the outside? Did the all have the MTM wheels? Im not sure if the all came with the body kit?

S1, was yours the full fat 286BHP model?
Mine was a 286hp
Black with dark windows and black Audi rings and more aggressive front spoiler than most; BBS wheels.
On race gas would emit a lovely exhaust flame >:D
I'm not sure , it was the dealer MTM option , they were all the same as opposed to 1.8 with an aftermarket MTM kit . It was about the time the were cleaning up at the BTCC and Aussie touring cars . May have been a NZ only kit spec
They were fitted in nz as a retro fit. Body kit was a nz sourced kit too.
- 187 chip only
- 210 chip plus full exhaust
- 286hp turbo, airbox, exhaust, chip
options.
286 suffered from non delivery of promised hp.

Plus injectors, fuel pressure regulation and remapped ECU EPROMs. Clutch was original Audi equipment however pressure plate and clutch disc were replaced with 1.9 ltr diesel spec items. Brakes std.
All 187/210 ECU remap work was EMD prepared and then installed by the dealer.
All 286ps cars were modified at MTM Germany except the last two units which were done at EMD in the day.
Early 286 cars suffered with the local octane and were required to have a revised map to remedy idle and acceleration performance.
286 units all had MTM branded alloys and front bumper kits. MTM chrome boot badging also.

That makes them a pretty special yet unknown and unloved car for the NZ market.
So the cars left the Audi production line and got delivered to MTM to tune? Do you know if these cars were done as a batch, or individual to order?
Would be cool to know how many were sold.
I remember a nice green one with the kit and wheels from back in the day, was well optioned, I think it was featured in a local magazine..

Though the 187 and 210's were sold as MTM tuned cars?
Been thinkin' some more......
from memory the 187 option was ~$3k, the 210 ~$8-10K and the 286 around $22k ?
Heres one for sale. No body kit? Could it be one of the 2 NZ built ones?

That's cheap..... gotta love the guy in questions telling him what it isn't..... world's full of experts.
I've got one and I love it!!! I have modified mine significantly chasing more performance which is a bit of a pity considering it's quite rare.
I would like one, but 4 cars is getting ridiculous!
I'd love to have only 4 cars.. :)

I went and had a look at this car yesterday. I'm pretty keen on another interesting Audi at some stage and this ticks the boxes. The current owner is out of his depth and it has not been well cared for the in last couple of years from what I can see. If anyone wants any info on it PM me. Interestingly VCDS cannot find the ECU on this car. Not sure if that is normal on the MTM 286 cars or perhaps it's had further modification? I recall my old mechanic was looking after one of these (Euroworks) and Torque were doing some tuning work on it. Could be this car I guess, but more than likely not.

At a guess I would say it the tuned car your mechanic spoke about would be Andy H's car ^
No it wasn't as far as I remember, but I could be wrong about that too! I did actually see it at the time and I don't think it was red.
There was another green 286 Avant on TM last week. Looks like it has sold.
Cameron Brodie told me he did a few MTM conversions when he was at Continental Cars. I guess most/all of the non-body kit cars were converted after delivery to their owners.

anyone ever seen a fwd mtm ?

jay;
do you know what issue (month/year) the auotnews article was published ?
there's a slim chance i might have a copy.
;)
If Jay doesn't have the exact month it would be worth hunting for issues from 1996-1997.
The fwd option must be for the early 1.8T that came in fwd, i remember seeing 95/96 models that were non-quattro.
Not sure about when the article originally came out, the fax date is 12/12/97 so might be late 96 or early 97. Some of the early MTM cars were MY96 iirc.

Le Mans, time for Audi # 5?
I did call the owner :D. Turbo on the way out (blowing smoke) and cam belt due so a bit of money to spend. Otherwise it looks pretty good. I wish I had a really big shed!

The exhaust tips look exactly like the one on my car. Otherwise no other signs. Does the ECU have anything that indicates whether it is MTM or stock?
Might be a 210 mtm model? I think if you open the ECU and look at the chipsets, if it has an MTM chip in there it will have a hand written sticker on it.

Yep sure is.
i asked the guy to go look at it out of interests sake, he's not keen to let people look at it as its in an unsecured yard. i'm getting some more pics sent to my phone when he gets a chance. would have been a wicked car in its day. shame really. could be saved. but yeah, needs everything
It's the kind of car if you had space you put it in a corner and leave it until the values increase enough to make it worth restoring. If that never happens it's no great loss, but it might be something in 10 years because of their relative rarity.
Be worth the 1k investment if it had the original MTM wheels. They were a cool unit when introduced if not slightly agricultural. Heavy duty clutch was the Audi A4 1.9tdi unit of the day to prevent slip with torque summoned from software upgrade. NZ was part of the R&D of A4 1.8t quattro MTM as it had issues with adaption of our highest fuel at 96 octane at the pump.
even though I need another car like I need a hole in my head I am intrigued by this poor thing. all out of stash spots for cars though and cash, and understanding from my other half....
I see the speedo is stuck on about 200kph
https://www.carjam.co.nz/car/?plate=dhl971
Anything special about the AEB engine in the MTM car? Forged internals? Different compression ratio?
From reading it's mostly turbo, injectors, ECU, airbox etc.
Since this car has a rooted piston I imagine there's a big mess inside not worth fixing.
sk
My understanding is just bolt-on mods and ECU chip. Should be fairly straight forward to swap another engine in. I'm not sure the gear boxes handle the torque all that well so another thing to consider.
Found another claim that the internals were upgraded at stage 3 - "From my understanding the MTM 286 (really 230) had stronger rods and pistons."
If that's true a stock AEB would get chewed up with the power. And original engine probably highly unrealistic to rebuild.
Coolant in sump sounds like MAJOR block failure and at least 1 piston and conrod destroyed.
Car looks like too much of mess to be bothered restoring. Might be worth something in the far future because rarity, but probably more likely stripped for parts.
thoughts?
A stock 1.8t should take that power easy. I think they use to say 300-350whp was the max on stock rods pistons were good for just under 500whp from memory
My memory has the mtm 286 with stock Internals, 99.9% sure
I did allot of research when I had my Lemans edition b5 car
Standard form the A4 1.8t was 150hp...
MTM stage 1 - ECU E-prom = 189hp
MTM stage II - ECU E-prom & cat back big bore exhaust = 210hp
MTM 286hp - as above & upgraded turbo, injectors, fuel pressure reg, airbox. clutch plate Plus bumper and alloys.
EMD performed stage I & II ECU offerings on exchange basis.
All 286hp upgrades were done by Mayer team at his ingolstadt based workshop with the exception of two conversions. EMD tech team did these.
The 210hp package was the best with linear torque curve in my view.
Could the go-fast bits be put on a later version of this engine?
eg. 1.8L 20 valve in a 2001 B6 A4 with AMB engine?
