Title: Software update list for Touran?
Post by: TheCamel on March 10, 2018, 10:08:26 AM
Hi Guys,
I have a Touran I am helping out with. Dealer is trying to get out of a repair under the CGA. My suspicion is that he has disabled the misfire detection to try and pretend he has fixed the car. However just before it goes to the disputes tribunal he is now claiming that it was done as part of a "software update" for that vehicle.
Is there a list somewhere I can access to see if there are any software updates for that vehicle?
It's a Jap import with the twin charger. I can provide further details if needed but happy to look it up myself if someone can point me in the right direction.
Thanks in advance!

Whats the repair supposedly needing doing?
A misfire is not always detected by the ecu, bad plugs for example won't be detected where as bad coils will be.
More detail would help.

Missfire detection was working fine before the dealers "mechanic" fixed it. Now it actually says misfire detection disabled when you look on the scanner.

Long story as short as I can...

Car was a fresh import, started running very rough a few hundred km after purchase. It has been run exclusively on Ultimate 98 by the owner so no issue there. It went to a local VW Specialist who diagnosed a fuel issue, changed fuel filter, discovered it was filthy, cleaned tank but missfire remains. They quoted to replace injectors but car dealer wouldn't let them (also hasn't paid for all the local specialists bill either and customer ended up carrying the bag on that one).

Dealer made the customer drive hundreds of km to drop the car off so he could save some money having his mate that can "fix anything for $200" "Fix" it. Car ran rough again half way home. Now when you look at the missfire counter it shows disabled and records no misses even though it's missing as bad as ever.

When the dealer was called out on disabling the missfire detector he said it was part of a software update for that vehicle. Which I am highly suspicious of.

Pretty much I just want to prove that my suspicion is right/wrong and have some evidence for the disputes tribunual. He has now offered to "have a look at the injectors" but obviously we don't want to suffer the cost and time of getting back to him for what will probably be another bodge job. Plus, who want's to keep going with a deal from someone like that? Better to be quit of him and start fresh.

Hope that fills you in.

Has anyone done a compression test?

Yes, I am quite confident on the diagnosis of injectors. It all looks fine in that department. The issue is the dealer is slimy, won't repair properly and won't refund. I have checked the car personally throughout the process as well as the local VW specialist who has done the work and diagnosis to date.

If you are confident it's the injectors then replace them.
At least then in court you have the cause of the problems and claim your money back from there.

Another spin on this, what's the possibility of the owner having gotten a tank of dirty fuel?
It's happened to me many years ago, fuel company should wear the cost in that case.
If indeed the dirty fuel system is at fault and vehicle was fine when purchased that could certainly be the case.
Not defending the dealer but just putting it out there.

One dirty tank of fuel stopped my car dead, spent ages figuring it out only to finally drain the tank and 1/2 was water and crap!!

Aren't the twin chargers known for being unreliable? I know our one had a misfire and turned out to be a broken piston ring and scored bore. A compression test as 80 vert suggested would show that up though.
Ours was a mk6 golf though.

They are common yes.

OP - regarding the misfire checking. Did you do this on cold cycle or warm cycle start?
For example the I have personally seen the mk6 GTI show it's been disabled. Turn car off and back on. Then it's working actively again.

Thanks for the replies. Hoping to have another look at the vehicle soon myself. It is possible the owner got a crook batch of fuel but highly unlikely, given the quantity of rubbish in there. Also the owner tends to use the same BP Ultimate fuel from the same garage each time and his other cars have been fine.

I am quite sure it's a fuel issue as are those that worked on it. It's more the dealer just doesn't want to spend any money. They are being very cunning, won't respond to anything in writing even when requested to and then say outrageous things on the phone.

Unfortunately, I am super busy at the moment so my involvement is not as much as I intended. Hope to have a look at the software versions soon.
