Title: Coupe quattro rebuild
Post by: Audi do on June 20, 2017, 09:33:29 PM
In approx a month I will be taking possession of my 1986 Audi coupe quattro.
I need to make room in my garage before I do, I will be rebuilding/restoring it.
The quattro was stripped but most of the parts are still there so I have started bringing home parts, one of the biggest parts is the engine. For whatever reason the original 2.2 engine was sold and what will be replacing it is a KG 2.1 turbo engine from a Audi 200 (what I can tell).
I was the second owner so I am quite excited to have it back in my care.
The rebuild will be a long winded affair and will depend on my health (I have been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) and finances, I am not very good at updating or taking photos but will do my best.

You ever get the "I wish I had never sold that car"?, well this is it, i had thought I would never see it again and when I came across it, I promptly bought it.
I am no stranger to the spanners (have been fixing cars for most of my adult life, along with small motors, chainsaws etc).
The body is mostly rust free save for a bit by the sunroof.

They seem to be the common areas as well as boot hinges and A pillars.
I have a few coupe bits lying around. Might be able to help you out if you're missing stuff.

Nice one Rob.
I am going to need a sunroof, smoked tail lights, head lights. Will see over the next few weeks what else I need.
The car does have rust in the A pillar but is only surface

Boot hinges seem ok.

Fitting a 10v turbo from a 200 running on kjet is a real pita. Easier to ditch it in favor of efi. Ill have a look for what typ85 stuff I have left as I had a major clear out a few months a go

Don't know if you're on Facebook but there's a groups called "Audi Ur Quattro GB"
Someone on there selling a sunroof for 40 quid.
Postage would add a bit though.

The AAJ is from a c3 quattro, the US is from a b2 quattro. Both are 4.11 final drive ratio.

US
1st-3.600
2nd-2.125
3rd-1.458
4th-1.071
5th-.778
final-4.11:1

AAJ
1st-3.600
2nd-2.125
3rd-1.360
4th-.967
5th-.730

Good info, have been searching but nothing like that came up. Which is the better box?, I assume they are largely the same aside from 3rd, 4th, 5th ratios? or are there other differences?.

Only difference is the ratios, identical boxes otherwise.

What gearbox to use and which is the better box?. Are the bearings/gears the same or are they different?
What ratio box should I use?, I am tending to use the US box because I want good torque assuming it will take the power from the turbo engine?.

Use the aaj box, better ratios.

They are identical internally and are the same strength. You will not be able to break any box with a 10v

I would like to go to 5x112 but that depends on if I can press out the 4x108 hubs and press in the 5x112 hubs and if the 5 studs hubs are available.

You can use the rear hubs from a b5 quattro. The only thing is they have 8mm more offset on them so require the use of the correct rotors, you can also modify c3 front struts like what the ur used

What parts have people for a 86 Typ85 Audi Coupe quattro?, I need twin filament Cibie headlights (also fitted to Audi Coupe GT), smoked rear tail lights, rear boot wing, 4x108 14"  Ronal's or (preferably) 5x112 15" Ronal's. (maybe fitted to some Audi 80 20valves?).

I vaguely remember years ago that the bighorn seats weren't suitable for transplanting into cars. Something to do with the upright stance in the bighorn. May have simply been the mounts/runners rather than the seats themselves. Might want to check out fitment before you go too far

I use imgur.
Up load pic to imgur then copy the bb code under the links tab of the pic.
Paste bb code into your forum post and picture should show when you post.
I can't seem to make it work using their app so I just go to the web page.

Dunedin.
As you can see I am going to need all sorts of parts.
I have the doors, boot lid, dash pad, door panels, engine and gearbox/s.
Over the next week or so I am going to make a list of parts needed.
The car was stripped and then the shell was left outside in the elements and I have noticed bad rust (holes) under the drivers rear quarter.

great photo of the engine bay side of the fire wall as it gives a clearer look at the prospects of turbo conversion by showing the location of things. where the brake MC would need to to be moved to on the left and battery tray deleted and relocated to the back somewhere in the boot. big job ,but a cool blank canvas

Is this Willie Gardeners old coupe quattro that got stripped to SWB convert?

Was.
It is mine again, I was the second owner and have been looking for it ever since I let it go.

Was fixing to move the battery to the boot, unsure about the brake mc, would need to fit the engine or have been thinking about a custom exhaust manifold.

Starting to look like an engine room after a bit of cleaning.

Looking pretty tidy in the wheel wells, some one has sprayed preservative around so there is little to no rust.

In rust (and bog) we trust.
This is on the front left leading edge of the bonnet.

This is drivers side front guard

And this is where a driverless car run down a hill and crashed into the back corner when I owned it in 1996 (I watched this happen). The bog is from a panel beaters 'repair', the bog is at least 5mm thick.
