Is it worth going to the 280mm rotors or just stick with the 256? Also will the 280mm rotors fit under 14" wheels?
Most probably would say do it
I say dont bother
you really dont gain much .. the Pad contact area remains virtually identical
Sure the Cooling potential increases but run to smaller wheels and your risk lack of cooling
256s with Decent Calipers, Pads and New Fluid and maybe even some brake ducting and you will stop just as good....
Not to mention with the 280s the extra unsprung/rotational mass...
Id say stick with the 256 too.. also don't think they would fit in 14's but.. my 256's have feck all clearance on the p-slots
yea I want to keep my 14" steelies, I like the completely standard look
my 288 just fit in 15's so i would say 280 woildnt fit in 14's
Just get good pads (DS2500 or equiv), good brake fluid and good rotors (Zinoelli do a really good trade price on slotted/dimpled rotors)
Even a stock 4 wheel disk setup is good with the right pads and everything in top condition, funny thing is you you don't notice until brake fade sets in ,thats when the big gear works great.
I'am changing to mk 3 front and rear brakes simply because I have a parts car to steal front

Just done the conversion to 256,heaps of room with my Esterols (15'')and after driving no need to go any bigger IMO.
256mm 4 stud ftw
Track or road?
Road probably get away with the crapty 256 setup. ;D
Track probably want better than the less crapty 280mm setup. ;) ;D

Did you change the master cylinder to the mk3 one?
Personally you have to be going really fast to need bigger brakes.
Everyone goes on about brake fade but I never even got close to it in my mk1 and that was pretty quick.
I think people are just bad drivers and over use their brakes.
lower rotating mass, better wheels,i thrash mine at the track and they love it mk2's are light so imo 5 stud 280 is over kill.
I am a fan of big if you are going to use them i had some scary moment in my mk2 with the stock gti brakes on some of the twisty road up the coast and i did the say drive the next year in my mk3 with the 288 and no fade at all. so I have put 288 on the mk2 now. But if you are in the city your not likely to every need them.
Its for my 1.8t jetta, will just go with the 256mm for the time being as I have a set here and will swap the drums for discs
