Title: Sifty's MK1 GTI...
Post by: sifty on September 06, 2011, 07:49:47 AM
So I was out minding my own  business in my wife's GTI Cab, and this guy comes up to me and starts talking about it. Turns out he has one too... a hardtop... that he's considering selling... s**t... :o

He's not giving it away, but I think it can be had for fair money - but it does need work...  what to do?

I currently have 2 scooter and a car for sale on Trademe, if even one of them sold it would make the decision much easier as I'd actually have a place to put it.

The first thing to do I reckon is not to tell anyone on here or you'll have vultures circling.

We cam give you an idea on price if you tell us the information and condition of the car.

Real Mk1 GTI's are hard to find. If I was you Id jump at it.

Well, I'd love to hear what people think it's worth, based on my description.

It is WOF'd and Registered, but it's done less than 5000kms in the last 10 years.
It is a 1982 build with the DX 1800. Imported from the UK at about 3 years old and done 113,000 miles.

Generally speaking, it's poorly presented, but then the guy didn't have it all clean and ready for sale, it's just pretty much as it's sat in a carport for year with an occasional run around the block or down to the testing station.
The interior is "ok" not mint, but all there, the worst bit is the standard worn out drivers side seat bolster. Also, it's a bit mouldy in there from being shut up for a long time.
The body is the let down really. It's tatty and fairly rusty. All along the roof gutters is rusty. It looks like surface rust, but in my experience stuff that 'looks like surface rust' usually hides something worse. There are bits and pieces of rust all around, nothing that seems too bad, but I plan to go back with a jack and stands and get under the sills and in the wheel arches and along the firewall.
The back drivers side rear quarter panel, between the wheel and tail light is all bogged, some time ago, but it's cracked and needs to come out.
The bumpers are not awesome, the front guards are a bit dented. the grille is cracked and had a crapty paint job. It's the twin headlight front.
Sadly it doesn't have P-Slots, it has those 9 spoke 13s.
It does have a gay '80s after market glass sunroof.  and the windows are clear glass, so it's not a 'Campaign Edition'
Fuel cap 'snowflake' part is broken off.
Does have the 'A' pillar plastic trims
Engine runs fine. a bit less rattly than our Cab.
Rear shocks are rooted, front probably not much better but hard to tell with the backs as they are.

My assessment is that it is by no means too far gone, but it wouldn't be a moment too soon to start hitting all that rust hard.

I have been to see this car with the after market sun roof. Its a metallic green isn't it?
He was asking WAY to much for it when I think its was Deedub asked me to check it out for him.
Its been for sale a long time.
Its worth about a grand but would cost a lot to get the rust done.
I would wonder how he got a wof with the rust along the roof line unless it really is just surface rust.
Its on the shore down a longish drive on a culdesac eh?

I wouldnt think its worth a hell of a lot of money. You could spend 10K+ on a car like that to get it nice.
If you go back to have a look for more rust have a look under the "A" pilar caps.
Money wise I wouldnt see this being worth anymore than $1,500.

Cheers. You are probably right.
What I can see happening is I'll offer him what I think it's worth, which he won't take because I'll be the first person giving him the bad news. Then he'll try and sell it and a few more people will tell him that and finally he'll end up selling it for less to someone else after several months of heartache and aggravation with all sorts of people coming and taking a look.
I've been there and done that many years ago with a Datsun 1600 SSS. I gave the guy the bad news, he was very upset, he tried to sell it for months and finally sold it for a couple hundy less than I'd offered him.
Or, he might get lucky and some one will pay too much for it.

I'm going to go take another closer look and If I don't find anything too frightening, I'll see if I can negotiate a price.  If I pass it up I'll spill the beans on it for anyone else who is interested.

Well....... I'm glad I made this thread...

He said he wanted in the high $2ks - I was pretty quick to tell him it wasn't worth it, but he was not convinced.

I did get the impression he doesn't actually want to sell it as much as say, his wife does.  But then, it's makes me cringe to think of it just sitting there rusting when someone could be treating it properly.  You know, if you love something set it free....

So I had the hard conversation with him. He says he's just going to leave it for another few months (because the rust might get better?) and then he'll list it on Trademe.

I think it was all a bit emotional for him, he's had it for over 15 years.  He is not keen to show it to anyone else for the moment.

I guess it's easy to tell someone else how much they should pay for someone else's car, but putting it into practice on your own 'pride and joy' is a bit different.

Yes, it was imported in 1986 by the original owner, I'm the 3rd owner I think.

Apparently just 4 years in the UK was enough to kick start a pretty widespread rusting process. On the other had, that's also the reason I could afford to buy it and now have the pleasure of driving it.

I have a mk1 here that I am scared to start working on as I really have so many other things I should be doing.........
Make sure you use a acid rust converter and then wash it clean with lots of water and then etch prime it when its as pitted as that.
Lotta work.

Yes, it's been weighing on my mind since I first saw it a few months ago. I just hated to think of it sitting there in that carport. It's in a nice dry garage now and getting some attention. It's going to be wearing a coat of patchy primer for a while though, I've got no immediate plans to respray it. With the way the rust is coming through, every panel needs to go back to bare metal to do a decent job.  So for now, I'm just buzzing out the obvious stuff, acid etching & priming.

It also needs a full set of shocks, but aside from that it runs ok (noisy tappets) and deserves to be driven for a while.  I've been having a blast on our twisty roads out here, can't wait to throw some new suspension in it.

Maybe one day when we concrete it, but our seal isn't up that kind of traffic.  And trust me, it's only 760m x 8m you can't really go that fast.

You should take the rear side windows out, rust loves to live in the window surrounds on a Mk1.

You do know that primer should not be left without a top coat for any length of time as it is porous?
I would spray a thin layer of topcoat over the primer to seal it off until you are ready for the full respray of the car.
Title: Re: So tempted. Stumbled upon a MK1 GTI...
Post by: sifty on January 26, 2012, 09:36:38 PM
Yes & Yes... The windows all need to come out. And yes I know primer is porous, I have used zinc primer, so not a primer I'll be top coating over and I'll be keeping it nice and dry, but I'm not kidding myself that this was a lasting repair in anyway. I just wanted to get to the bottom of some of the rust to see how bad it was and slow it down a bit, and get an idea of what I'm getting myself into.
The car needs a bare metal really, but it definitely won't do any harm to have removed all the rust I've buzzed off.

I do appreciate the advice though, glad to know people care.   8)

That cars lovely man, where did you find the pic? Random google or is the any more info on it....??

Cars looking good...glad you weren't put off by the hidden rust, just enjoy driving it as much as you can...

Yeah, I think it was on the VWVortex or some VW forum... ummm. I'll let you know if I find it again. I did ask for more info, but no one had any, aside from the obvious that he has 15" P Slots and I don't...  :'(

I am enjoying driving it, I used it for the daycare run this morning with my daughter. 15 minutes drive up Old North Road and Peak Road  ;D   I'll be liking it more with some suspension that is a bit less rooted though.

So I'm about to bite the bullet on a new set of springs and shocks - So far I'm leaning towards the H&R Cup Kit Touring (not quite as much drop as the Sport as I drive on gravel roads)
http://www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-Golf_I-Rabbit-8v/Suspension/Suspension_Kits/ES1303463/

Does anyone have any views good/bad on these? and also n ECS Tuning, I've read a few people saying they were good to deal with.

I'm in serious need of something, at the moment it drives like a Cadillac.  :o

Axle weights???  I'm getting ready to order a set of H&R Cup suspension from Awesome GTI (as soon as Scottishross has beaten them down on the price as much as he can) but there are a number of different ones to choose from and I'm not sure I fully understand the differences...  ???

Can anyone decipher this for me? http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/section.php?xSec=5&xPage=1

Mine is an '82 GTI 1800 (UK import)

After a quick look at that website it seems you can only get one H&R Cup kit for the hatch:

http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/product.php?xProd=29081&xSec=5&jssCart=35bb4ab63edee4492361a9be940d5dd4

And it looks like about 4 options for the soft top.

Yeah it's confusing as hell. But I think that option you're showing is for the early models between '74 and '79.

The other ones all list Type 17 and 155.

Looking at the H&R website possibly makes a bit more sense, but if I choose my year and model I get the same four choices.

AwesomeGTI wasn't any use in trying to work it out. I've emailed H&R too, but who knows if they'll respond.

Ok. So we got carried away and weighed them both at each corner and we added weight (me) to the front and rear seats and recalculated the weights to work out the percentage split that the weight adds to the front and rear, then I made a spread sheet so I could plug in different weights to see how the balance would be affected.... Yes, I get carried away sometimes...   ::)

So here's the long and short of it for anyone interested.

All weights are in KG, both cars had nearly full tanks of gas onboard - 35L each (weighing 25kg)
My Hardtop is an 1800 and the Cabby is a 1600, also the Cabby has a towbar we'd estimate at another 20kg.

               Front     Rear    Total
Hardtop:    562      327      889
Cabby:      591      393      984

The weight % splits are useful, if you want to work out what spring weight you need. So if you add eg: a 80kg driver, how much of that weight goes to each axle. etc.

Weight added to Front Seats:
51.63% adds to the Front Axle weight 48.37% adds to the Rear axle weight.

Weight added to the Rear Seats:
17.65% adds to the Front Axle weight 82.35% adds to the Rear axle weight.

Back to the original question then: Which H&R springs to choose?

For my purposes, I'm generally going to weigh under 660kg front axle and most people would weigh under 570kg rear too.
Here is an example: if I had 2 x 80kg people in the front and 1 x 80kg in the back and a full tank of gas (which is honestly the most load I'm likely to carry. Then my front axle weight would be 659kg and my rear 470kg.

Glad I worked it out now.  8)

Title: Re: So tempted. Stumbled upon a MK1 GTI...
Post by: sifty on February 16, 2012, 09:04:01 AM
I'm pretty curious about the new suspension myself! It's a bit of a stab in the dark how high/low it will sit without knowing if the current springs have sagged or not.  But I'm going for a period OEM+ kinda look anyway, so I'm not after an extreme change. 25 to 30mm would be ideal.

The weights is an interesting issue. Most spring suppliers just offer one spring choice for a given ride height so the choice is easy. H&R are really selling themselves short by not actually explaining how and why you'd choose either of their options. IMO it should put them ahead of other brands for a nice street-sport setup when choosing.

I have the MFA in my Vert as well. The LCD screen is all good and the stalk switch scrolls through everything but the numbers never change and the oil temp is just 4 little dashes.
I think Vert knows how to fix these?
Where is the brain for it and anyone know why it is not working properly? Spoolin had his fixed by Vert.
Also what is the 1 and 2 position all about on the stalk?

Mfa are known for failure. Vert got an instrument guy to repair maddies, but it was only the milage bit that was stuffed. Starts with time, km traveled, average speed, l per 100k, oil temp amd outside temp. So similar to what's in the newer cars really. Its as marked around the face of the LCD display.
Title: Re: So tempted. Stumbled upon a MK1 GTI...
Post by: BB on April 25, 2012, 11:48:31 AM
Well I just pulled my dash and the plug was badly fitted.
It seems to be working better now.
Tho the outside temp said 27?
Bit high eh.
Also there is a picture of a clock as the first setting? But if you turn off the car you get the time but no mark by the clock?
Is the clock sign the time since the engine was started? So it can warn you when you need a break after two hours?
Also my l per 100k just says 99.9? But I haven't driven it yet maybe it will work.
This is the bit I like the most, I found I could get better economy in my 200 in 4th gear over 5th at 100kph into a headwind.

The instrument guy will probably be Auckland Speedometer Repairs in treetops road over on the shore, hes a good dude. Ph 443 2060

You gona stick it on the mk1?
Ask Lee he has been through all of that.
You need way more fueling at the top end than the k-jet gives so EFI and extensive mapping is needed or the pistons melt.
I wonder if you somehow had the boost blowing under the air flap blowing it fully open, or maybe even have an electromagnet on the top that has a WOT switch and it magnetically lifts the flap to its max and holds it there :)
You want to alway make it so that it runs well off boost but better still on boost.
Often k-jet gets compromised by people riching it u to run better at the top end and its a pig everywhere else :P
Good fun when they go, but they do only last so long boosting them standard. From what I know.

A lot like ATS Cups, but not quite.
They were made by Strato in West Germany, now defunct, circa 1985-89. They became part of Aluline.

Yes, not too bad. A few runs in the clear coat which I'm going to try sanding out and then redoing the clear. Hope it comes out ok.

Cheers, good question. I actually haven't panel beaten it at all (well knocked out some small dents, but no bog). The goal was just to tidy it up until I can devote the time and money to a proper paint job in a few years. So I just removed a little more surface rust and smoothed out some of the rough edges a little.  All the little dents and scrapes are still there but I think you'll agree it's looking a lot tidier.  :)   Anyway, I had to draw the line somewhere, so door handles was about it.

Takes 2min to remove the handles and you can still open the doors.
But hey you dun real good bro ;)
Wheels and satin black on mk1s is sick.

I nearly did it too.  ::)  I've had bad experiences with getting old door cards off in the past where they pretty much disintegrate in your hands, so I was a bit put off.   Oh well, next paint job, they're definitely coming off, along with all the windows and pretty much anything else that unbolts.

Cheers, I thought it needed the stripes so I actually just masked around them instead of removing them. I have a spare set of new ones, but I didn't want to break those out just yet for this "temporary" paintjob.
It all adds a nice patina in my opinion, the car still looks well used and ready to be used some more. I'll never be someone accused of having a car that is too tidy, I love the battle scars.

I'm glad to finally have the Strato rims on, they look about how I imagined, the offset is great pretty much flush all round, but... I have some even less common wheels on the way too.  8)

Well, I thought I'd put up an update on my Mk1, but it turns out I haven't posted for ages, so here's a little catchup too.

- Finally got my "Holy Grail" wheels - 15" P Slots.

- Got featured on Petrolicious - http://www.petrolicious.com/golf-gti

- Took it to Hampton Downs, had an awesome time and broke the gearbox - http://www.vask.org.nz/index.php/topic,35105.0.html

Since then: I've pulled the engine and box, steam cleaned and repainted the engine bay, tried to find a replacement box, given up, decided to fix the one I have. Have fixed it (with some help), just got all the gaskets and seals to put it back together.
Some brand new front guards are on the way - thanks to Dave, who also sorted me out a gearbox I was able to get the parts off to fix my own.

About now I am absolutely itching to drive it again...

Well I have all of the hard-to-find parts to do that, but at the moment I'm just focussing on getting it back on the road stock and getting the body work in order.

Yes...
I have a new windscreen sitting here
I've got both front wings off; The drivers one I've had off before, but the passenger side had never been off, so it still had all the goo VW use to stick them on with. So I guess I now belong to the club of people who have struggled through getting a Mk1 OEM wing off.  ::)
I was a bit nervous as to what I'd find under there, this being the last unexplored area of the car... but it's not bad at all, no welding required although I wouldn't have wanted to leave it any longer.
Under the windscreen is all good too.
Other than that: A lot of paint stripping....

Nice one. I kinda miss my Mk1 but then when Im in my new passat and I put my foot down with 4 people and luggage in it and it just takes off like a 747 I don't so much, plus all that god damn body work. But they sure are fun to drive and they sure do look cool when its all over. I just don't have the time or energy to fix up old cars no more. But it is nice to see you still do sifty, keep pluging.
Just Abf it, great fuel economy and no over heating and ring frying and plenty of power to get you into serious trouble. Turbos are a step to far.
Who really gets to use the power?
I get speeding tickets........if I get one more i lose my licence.....I only got two little ones anyway, 67kms for about 2 seconds and 128kms when over taking safely. Balls to fast cars. :(

I don't either, but it's 'unfinished business' for me.
I've done plenty of stuff to plenty of cars over the years, but to date: I have not finished (to my satisfaction) a major car project that I've started.
I'm really enjoying it, but I doubt very much I would do this again.

Keep at it, you are doing a good job!
I know what you are talking about. The more you work on it, the more you find to do or fix.
Feels good when you do get something done.
Have you check on the inside were the bonnet hinge is attached to for rust?
I've found some surface rust on mine and just treated it with rust converter, all the way up the front inside pillar as far as I could.

It's almost one year since I broke the gearbox causing a chain of events that lead to this.
(https://www.vask.org.nz/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1194.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faa367%2Fsifty1%2F2014-12-04153459.jpg&hash=763237c06c71a7e50caacc93f17f27a091de3f7f) (http://s1194.photobucket.com/user/sifty1/media/2014-12-04153459.jpg.html)

A good time to reflect. I didn't expect that 'just breaking the gearbox' would take the car off the road for so long. Technically, I suppose it didn't, I had a suitable replacement gearbox ages ago. But, sometimes I just can't leave things alone.

I am nearing a turning point, I just have to paint strip 1 sill and sandblast a few small areas around the exhaust pipe and on the front valance - after that: there is nothing else to "take off'.

Title: Re: Sifty's MK1 GTI...
Post by: sifty on April 17, 2015, 07:58:58 AM
Yes it came out really good, all things considered.  We had a bit of a drama on what was going to be the top coat. Having sprayed all the primer and base coats with no issue and running 2 water traps, we got water through the lines. We think it was a combination of the humid weather and the compressor overheating.
Anyway, there was nothing for it but to let the paint dry, then wet rub everything with 2000 grit and repaint the top coat.
The net result though is that we now have an even better finish than we would've.

After a cut & polish it'll be excellent.

So, trucking along nicely.
All the windows are back in except the windscreen.
most exterior trim back on.
Little side project fitting period Blaupunkt speakers to a parcel shelf I built out of an old knackered one I scored off Spooln.

gearbox back in.

Next mission is getting the engine bay wiring all hooked up again, fluids refilled then trying to start it up.

Got a WOF & Reg today.  :D

I swear this was one of the longest and most nerve wracking WOF's I've been for. The dude (not my normal guy) seemed like he was going to be a total Nazi and he was exceptionally thorough (though it turns out he thought the car had been off the road since 2003, so I can see why). Sailed straight through................

I'm still polishing, and I have a few other little jobs to do here and there, find out where the pile of leftover bits goes, etc.
So in my mind, I'm not "finished" yet.

It feels good to be able to drive it again though after 18 months off the road.  8)

Awesome Si! Can I suggest when you have finished polishing etc that you apply a stone chip guard on the bottom of the doors to keep that paint looking good- plus helps with your drive way😉. The 3M stuff I have used to do the front of the R32 has been awesome and saved me plenty of stone chips.

Well, it is running great. I had it as my daily for a month while I was between cars, and it was faultless.

The next thing I need to do is tidy up my garage properly so I can find the few little trims and things that I can't seem to locate.  And I need to work out where the small pile of rubber & foam blocks go around the boot, doors and bonnet.

Weeeeeeell...

It looks like we missed prepping part of one quarter panel properly...

Got some kind of reaction going on here, thankfully just on one area - right rear quarter panel above the swage line.

I can't see much we can do other than repaint it though.

I've had that happen before. You could try wetsand and then polish it but in my experience it just comes back after a little while.
Title: Re: Sifty's MK1 GTI...
Post by: sifty on November 06, 2015, 01:46:37 PM
Yeah, I was getting ready to polish it but when I cleaned it up and looked close it seems more like it's a reaction under the paint.

Anyway the painter is stopping in for a look this afternoon so I'll see what he says. Worst case I think it's a repaint of that panel which wouldn't be the end of the world.  :D
Title: Re: Sifty's MK1 GTI...
Post by: M M on November 06, 2015, 03:59:47 PM
Yes, it's looks like the paint has wrinkled up up close doesn't it? Will most likely need to repaint it. I still don't know what causes that though, apart from that I've read it can happen if you don't let it dry enough between coats.

Catch up update:

So that aforementioned 'minor paint reaction' tuned into a full blown monster cock-up.  At first I thought maybe 1 panel needed repainted, then I looked some more and thought mabye 2 or 3, then 4 or 5.... Then 'oh crap' it's the whole car really.

In the process of investigating that, I also found out the painter has waaaay over sanded the primer, so the top coat just peels off with out much encouragement.

Present state of affairs is like this, again:

That's a nice parts fairy you've got...

When they're both finished will be nice to compare braking between yours and mine - I thought long and hard and went with a 25.4mm master cylinder with a very big brake booster.....

Beautiful.

Was reading a write up of how long it took to make a GTi in 1981 - basically a day. Raw sheet in at 4am and the car rolls out at 23:50.....

That looks like a perfect 16:45 - body painted ready for assembly....

Only 7 hrs to go ........

Ok - weeks maybe

They were fitted with daytime running lights and used a different light switch....

I'm trying to get the connector off the loom (I've already got the switches) so that I don't need a relay to turn the lights OFF when the lights are turned on.

Was also fitted to European Mk2 (86C) Polos....

Why would you need a Relay? Just use the Headlights Positive Feed as the Earth for the DRLs. when you flick your headlights on it eliminated the earth and the DRLs shut off

Great idea but that won't work. When the lights are off there's no path back to ground.... So the lights won't ever come on.
When lights off there would be +12 and nothing but when lights on both sides are +12 so the lights would be off, which is hat you want - hence the relay to put the negative of the light to GND?

Karl who owns red rabbit project has a callaway valve cover. You might have to twist his arm to add that to the rest of the package.
Title: Re: Sifty's MK1 GTI...
Post by: sifty on February 27, 2017, 08:01:03 AM
I have discussed that with Karl, but not successfully, yet.

I've tried to buy valve covers several times but the guys selling them have all been in the US and they didn't want to deal with a foreigner when there were plenty of local people who wanted them too.
I'll find one eventually...

Quite a few of them have ended up as 'trophies' in people's garages or paper weights or fitted to non-turbo cars.  It's making them a bit harder to find.

You'd think so!  It seems that quite a few Americans have a real mental block with dealing with foreigners.
One guy didn't want the part going overseas (some misguided patriotism), another didn't want to ship at all and he was in a big city so a local person bought it, and another didn't even want to talk about it.

Btw, stage 1, 2 or 3 kit?

It was a Stage 2, but it doesn't have 100% of the Stage 2 parts. Notably the micro-fueler, which most people tend to replace anyway with a better solution, and in cabin boost adjustment.
The intercooler is the setup for a car with A/C so it mounts low in front of the gearbox, instead of vertically beside the radiator. That's actually good because the oil cooler can stay where it is and the piping is shorter and neater than on the non A/C version.

Sick, do you have 3 callaway gauges for your console?
Title: Re: Sifty's MK1 GTI...
Post by: sifty on April 05, 2017, 07:55:29 AM
I've got the Callaway VDO boost gauge, which is the only gauge the for the kit, and I have the period VDO Oil Pressure, Water Temp & Voltage to match.
Originally on Callaways the boost gauge was fitted down the on center console (US spec cars only had 2 gauge holes there) but it's a bit of a useless place for a boost gauge, so a lot of them ended up being moved up into a housing on the steering trim or above the heater controls.
If I can find a decent housing I think I'll mount it up higher.

Finally I have the head bolted on with ARP studs and a steel head gasket to lower compression.
Next up mock fitting turbo and drilling and tapping an oil return into the block.

Next up is getting a WOF, then pulling the stock motor and box and then missioning until it's in.

Spring Jambo for me = coilover time + add a sticker or three

Right, I might leave the engine in until after Jambo then. There is a bunch of fiddly stuff and fabrication to do after the engine & box are in, so it's going to take months at least.

Oh man... I've missed a lot of updates.

Some of those:
- Turbo oil drain tapped into block
- built blanking plate for crank case vent so the WUR can mount in the stock location.
- Ported out intake manifold to take bigger Audi throttle body
- Upgraded all the brakes to bigger Audi 80 spec, with EBC discs and pads.
- ground out inlet manifold to clear turbo manifold
- mounted MSD Boost Retard unit
- recut Porsche 930 turbo injector seats to fit the Mk1 head and take 930 injectors.
- upgraded oil cooler
- pulled old engine and box.
- mounted up heavy duty clutch & lightened flywheel.
- bolted up rebuilt gearbox with LSD to engine.

That's about were we are now. Getting ready to put this motor in and then deal to all the plumbing.

A little tiny update on this, Simon has tasked me with some of the fab and plumbing work to get this under way again.
Soon as I looked at the turbo I thought it looked pretty tired so I gave it to Steve Murch, I wasn't wrong.
In dire need of a refresh but it is a completely OG 70's Rotomaster, all surfaces re machined, new bearings, seals and re set the clearances on the exhaust wheel to exhaust housing due to heavy scaling and rust.
Clearance to the firewall and steering shaft is non existent so some creative solutions are called for there, this kit of course was designed for LHD.

Why don?t you shift the engine and gearbox forward 20mm to gain some firewall clearance?
