Title: V12 Q7
Post by: b0000st on May 23, 2009, 01:05:30 PM
Had our first V12 TDI Q7 delivered today and took it for a quick test drive and man can it haul ass. Will get some pics on Monday. The only thing I can liken the power to is the RS6 but it seems more fun in a big SUV. The engine does not sound like a diesel at all it also has full ceramic brakes which are huge!

At 60 degrees , this engine must look massive, also 2000bar fuel pressure, thats close to 30000psi, wouldnt want any fuel leaks >:D.

I bet it is an impessive animal.

The exterior isnt that much different with deeper front bumper, arch trims and the oval tail pipes which are part of the bumper and not actaully fixed to the exhaust.

Brakes are huge wheels are 20's for some scale, front calipers are made by Alcon. I'd imagine that they are shared with the RS6 to save some $ on development.

And the centre piece is the engine, its pretty impressive and fingers crossed it will never go wrong as it looks like a right bitch to work on.
1000Nm of torque from 1750rpm  >:D
It will be interesting to see how it survives as the guy who's bought it is in the logging bussiness and actually uses his old Q7 out in the bush and I imagine will do the same with this one. Imagine $275000 worth of car banging round in the bush  :o

The brakes do appear to be the same as the RS6, I think you can get the RS6 alloys on the V12 Q7 also.

Very impressive car 8)

Does the exhaust system not connect to those tips at all?

Dont all the V12's here have 21 inch wheels? Same style as the RS6 but an inch bigger. As does the anniversary Q7.
As awesome as the v12 TDi is, i would save a 100K and buy the V8 TDI AND remap it to 1000Nm and buy something else as well :)

They do come on 21's but he specced 20's as he can get off road tyres in that size.  :-\
The tailpipes are sat behind the oval trims, Honda did a similar thing with the Civic type R.
Interestingly the vin begins WUA which is the same as the RS models.

30 mins, that's Le Mans kinda time. ;)

I wouldnt have a Clue...
I was talking to a Service Manager at Contis

Apparently because you cant reach or service anythign in Situ.. they loom and lines are very easy to unplug and the engine slides out the front.. on the "Vag Special tool" Engine lift

So the engine needs to be easy to pull for the purpose of replacing bits...

Where does the RS6 come in to the equation?

Im just repeating what i have been told...

From memory, it takes 17hrs to replace the spark plugs on a V10 RS6. You have to drop the engine to get at the back two plugs!
I'd like to see the guy at Conti's drive the car in get it up and have the engine out in 30 mins though.

Yes it is, its away having all the radio gear fitted at the moment.

As for engine out in 30mins I do believe someones been bull crapting, the bed that is used for taking the motor out is handy but i'd love to see it done that quickly. On the V10 TDI the looms stay on the engine and the whole lot drops out on the front subframe that engine has a lot more room around it but it is still prob about 1/2 a days work to drop out.

You can get to the sensor easily but they route the wiring up on top of the gear box and cover the plugs with a metal plate so the only option is to drop the motor.

Its not too bad TBH and its covered by warranty so they prob allow about 5hrs lol.

Theres absolutley heaps of things that can only be changed with the motor out, wonder how many of the after market insurers will offer policies on cars like this and what the premiums will be?

You and I know what's coming, but Joe Blow who sees a V12 Q7 for 50k and thinks WOW!!! Buys it and spends the rest if his ownership selling vital organs and becoming a "rent boy" to cover his garage bills.
It's been getting worse for the last ten odd years. Just look at all the really cheap early 2000 model Audi's, Mercs bla bla.
There was that wicked 2001 S6 that went recently for 22k! Beautiful car, but later on it's just going to hurt too much.
They're just far too complicated for their own good.
And now having to drop V10 and V12 engines out of RS6's, Q7's for medial work etc is just plain dumb engineering.

i have heard the DB7 described as an XJS with a posh frock on, never really thought that was fair on the Aston....... so by that logic a far less flattering but more realistic description would perhaps be that the xjs is a DB9 with a boiler suit and a hankie tied in 4 corners on its head ;)

Yeah but when they bring in their "bargain" of a car and get given a price for repair it will be our fault as a main dealer that it costs so much. Ive been told the ceramic discs for the front of the Q7 are $15k each  :o so I hope any future used car buyers do their research

I gathered that, but I still wouldn't mind finding out for sure, as that just sounds like a crap fight waiting to happen.
When you can get the ENTIRE brakes upgraded on a Murcielago to carbon for less than the front rotors on the Q7. Just doesn't sound right, even at Audi's silly prices.

Title: Re: V12 Q7
Post by: M on August 22, 2009, 08:07:25 PM
I can check on Monday but I am sure I heard the same price for the rotors.

I wasn't too impressed by it to be honest.... especially for the asking price of $275,000NZD. The interior is also still a let down, they have added some carbon and trimmed the panel above the dash clocks in leather, WOW. Full leather and an alcantara roof would be more in keeping with the cost.

My in laws have a Cayenne Turbo and when it comes on song the mid range is stomping but it also builds to a nice top end. The Q7 started thumping and I thought "Oh, here we go" and don't get me wrong it is stomping pull but it is all over too soon.

I have driven all the VW/Audi diesels including the R50 Touareg and they are excellent to a point but as real fun they just don't do it. I still think the 4.2 Audi V8 TDi engine is the best of the lot, seems to rev nicely and torque doesn't tail off as fast.

My point in all this is that I think a diesel is still excellent for daily driving but I am not sure that for that little bit of excitement the diesel can cut it. Again the Cayenne can idle along nicely, quietly and reasonably efficient when needed, when you then flatten the pedal it has some great pull and excitement. I could buy a 4.2 TDi Q7 for $150,000NZD if I went for a new one and still have loads left for a toy, even less for a 3.0l TDi, would rather have a Cayenne for interior although I agree the Q7 looks better in top spec trim. In fact a new RS6 is cheaper and MUCH more fun, will do just about everything the Q7 would anyway, as let's face it, no one takes a V12 TDi off road for real, sure they might go through a little mud but not OFF ROAD like my Rangey could do.  ;D

That post was a LOT bigger than I thought hahaha.

When you can get the ENTIRE brakes upgraded on a Murcielago to carbon for less than the front rotors on the Q7. Just doesn't sound right, even at Audi's silly prices.

The price for upgrade on a new vehicle is often massively less than the cost of spare parts later.

I seem to remember the carbon brakes for 911 Turbo's were only a few thousand pounds when you bought them as a new car option, but were into ten's of thousands to replace when they wore out.

More like four new Corolla's
That's truly bullcrap money.
It's still an SUV for Gods sake! Not a Veyron.

And I didnt have time to price up the sensors lol

Labour would be quite high as well as there is a specific bedding in process.

I doubt after market suppliers will bother as its not a mass seller and so they would never shift them.

So basically, this is a vehicle for a millionaire to own for a long time or a wannabe to own for its first 2 years of life.

Many millionaires wouldn't even put up with that sort of running cost. It's basically a 2 year car yes, or best way would be buy at a year old and save a fortune and then have 2 years warranty left but then selling it out of warranty would hurt too.

It'd only hurt if the buyer was aware.  >:D
