What car do you have?
Year/Model/Engine/Colour/Spec/etc.
Modifications and plans?
Photos as well.
I've just bought a black 1999 Golf GTI 1.8T.
Before I got it I had plans for some body kit and a maybe a GAIC/REVO chip. But after reading these forums I'm not so sure it will be so easy down here in NZ. Plus I think I like my car the way it is anyway. Maybe I'll still install a chip, but it will probably just frustrate me driving in traffic, would be great for any trips down country though.
I'm still pretty keen to install an old laptop for a media player, I'm investigating this now.
2001 Silver V6 4Motion.
I bought it completely standard, and planned to keep it that way apart from maybe some 17's and tints.
However, I've now fitted:
R32 front bumper
Carbon fibre bonnet
18" TMW alloys, with 225/40 tyres
Vogtland lowering springs
EIP short-shifter
EIP trans-mount (dogbone)
Straight-thru 2-1/2" rear muffler
Brembo cross-drilled rotors
Tinted windows
Phatnoise 20Gb mp3 hard-drive (works through factory head-unit)
I also have a Haldex Controller, which I haven't had time to fit yet (hopefully within the next week) and an EIP Stage 2 Turbo Kit, with the following:
Turbonetics Ball Bearing Turbo
Front mount intercooler
A'pexi boost controller
GReddy blow-off valve
Turbosmart external wastegate
Head-stud kit
Autometer boost gauge
K&N Filter

I thought you cancelled the EIP turbo kit? Did it finally turn up? And looks like you've already fitted it?
Have you dynoed it yet or checked the air/fuel ratio?
I'm picking by the picture something at least showed up ;)
Must be the most modified Mk4 in NZ right?

Yes, I contacted them in order to cancel the kit, and suddenly they were very apologetic, and promptly managed to assemble everything for me. I even talked them into a free Haldex Controller (US$899), due to their poor customer service and the excessive wait.
I have all the parts, but haven't fitted it yet. I took the above photo after a trial fit of the intercooler to ensure it'd fit behind the bumper.

Hello I have finally got the wife to approve the purchase my MK 4 golf GTI 20V. ;D Which was not hard once she got into the car and drove one. I found a 2003 model that has less than 25000kms on the clock. It purrs now I have a question whats the output(bhp) of my car. If you were the previous owner the car was bought in Wgtn. You will know it when you see the car.
Next question can anyone answer if the radio wave remote key for my car will need new batteries. As I cannot see an easy way to replace them.
Will keep it standard for now someone I knew said the car packs heaps under the hood with a brilliant handling capability. Nothing a Japanese vehicle can do so compactly. There is also plenty of room to upgrade as well.
I have hooked myself on the Golf bug.

Being a 2003 it should be 180BHP, earlier Mk4 GTIs are 150BHP. Do you know what you engine code is?
Oh, and welcome to the forum.
Thanks for the information. I'm pleasantly supprised as I was guessing it around that, how do you check for the engine number is it on the vin plate on the chassis??? How can you tell from looking at that number??
But if anyone knows if the remote ever needs battery changing can you please let me know.

You engine code should be AUQ or ARY if its a 180 BHP version.
Not to sure how to find out your engine code, it should be stamped into your block, maybe something in the drivers manual? A spec sticker or something?
Engine Code
I stamped on to a plate near the throttle body from memory it is a three letter code.
alternativly it will be on the sticker in the spare wheel well along with paint codes chassis etc.
Just joined the forum. Just brought a Golf Black 2001 V6 4motion.
What BHP is this engine, think it may be 210 or could be wrong.
Love the golfs, R32 is my best but had to settle for the 4motion. Mark 5's are starting

Whats the Flapper Mod
Quote from: ?iva on November 10, 2007, 06:50:28 AM
Whats the Flapper Mod
I am only going by what I have read on Vortex etc but there is a flap in the exhaust that only opens up above 45mph and a certain number of revs (I think that it closes off the left exhaust outlet (viewed from the rear of the car)). The flap is operated via vacuum. By doing the flapper mod you apparently get around 10hp and 10ft pd of torque, or nothing depending on who you listen to, tho I have seen a dyno chart claiming the 10bhp.
It's a very expensive mod cost=$0.00. As I understand it the flap stays closed until the conditions above are met, the mod keeps it open all the time so you get the "full exhaust sound" plus the slight power increase. If you look on Vortex there are heaps of ways of doing it, all sorts of buttons that open and close it, but this way is free and it is only as loud as it is when it's being driven normally.
From the back of the car, stick your head underneath the bumper, underneath the left tail pipe. You'll see a rubber pipe going into the exhaust backbox. If u pull the pipe off from the vacuum (when the engine is off), the flap will remain open at all times, meaning you get the full loud exhuast sound all the time.
I just put a plastic cap onto the vacuum pump and a bit of tape around it, and a self tapping screw into the rubber tube and then placed the tube up into a convenient part of the chassis.
If you don't like it it can be reversed for the install cost.

Yeah, the K&N filter goes in the filter box where the existing filter goes, i think the filter retails for about $215 from repco, also can get a simalar filter from Platinum VW. i am also doing the Cold Air Intake as desribed here http://www.eurosport.org.nz/index.php?topic=3388.0 It is a very easy mod to do to increase power. haven't put on dyno yet so will post figures when i get it done.
The Flapper mod looks like another easy cheap mod to do.
Warning do not install K&N Panel Filters in Volkswagen or Audi vehicles with Airflow Meters
K&N have pulled all their VAG Filter lines for VAG cars with MAF's in the united States
The Flow difference between modern paper filters and oiled fabric K&N filters is next to nothing..
so unless you wish to destroy your Airflow metre and be up for mega bucks for a peice of plastic with a silicone board embeded do not install a panel or a pod..
the oil from the filters damages the precision sensor!
also if your not willing to clean and re oil the filter every 10,000kms dont waste your time buying one..
So how would i know if my Golf has an air flow meter???
Do they all have them??

i have one of their boost guages its really responsive and matches the cluster guages..
i woul just buy a new paper filter if i were you and a new N75
and look at ordering a S3 Strut Brace they are 250 - 300 dollars from a dealership and they tighten up the flexi front of the MK4
ive installed several of them and everyone has loved em..
also look at upgrading your Dogbone Mount (lower engine mount makes everything feel far more direct)

so unless you wish to destroy your Airflow metre and be up for mega bucks for a peice of plastic with a silicone board embeded do not install a panel or a pod..
the oil from the filters damages the precision sensor!
also if your not willing to clean and re oil the filter every 10,000kms dont waste your time buying one..
Don't doubt you for a second. From a Subaru perspective over oiling the filter causes air flow meter issues on WRXs and STIs. My WRX has a CAI with an oiled foam filter and I have not had a problem over the 12,000ks it has been there, but unless there is a major increase in flow it seems pointless.

very nice mate.....unlike most of the mainstream mk4;s around.tail lights suit the colour...
hi.
Yup 18's, they should look pretty good once I get this thing lowered and hunt down some skirts for it.
Your wagon is sweet rambo, you in auckland? Id love to see it in person. Nice to see something a lil different for all the usual stuff on the road.
hey euro,
i was thinking bout getting some smoke tints off ebay for the front lights, pretty cheap so if they didnt work it wouldnt be any great loss, either that or maybe a painted headlight mod that I saw posted on some forums in the weekend
ask member " fizz " he bought some recently and im sure they were from new zealand

I'm in Wanganui, will have the Bora at the VW Nationals, as long as I can get the leave for it ::)
Nice package eek 8)
I like the Abt grille and rear skirt, some side skirts to match would look the part ;D
Post a pic up of the white gauges when you're done, be good to see how they look!
hey,
Yeah Im looking forward to having white faced gauges again, only problem is that the temp is in F not C so Im stuck with white faced tacho and speedo only. oh well might make for an interesting look.
That reminds me, can someone point me in the direction of a "how to" remove my mk4 cluster? I imagine it shouldnt be difficult but I like to be prepared...

Welcome aboard, same wheels as mine!
Watch those jamex springs, member GTIVR6 just bought some and not happy with them. I will have surplus Eibach springs soon as I'm having to get 4 motion ones for mine. (will get Eibach again, very happy with them)
Hey Vert,
Cool, drop me a PM with some more info re: the springs. I might be keen.
I had a set of King springs in my wrx and they were rubbish. Would like to go coil overs but theyre price prohibitive for me at the moment.

Hi All,
It's a 2001 V6 4Motion. Imported from England by previous owner who brought it with him when he imigrated. No mods but I have a supercharger jar for all my change. I'm going to need more than one jar though.
It makes the missus nauseas, she doesn't like the rapid changing of direction etc.
EDIT: Image Removed.
Congratulations Dave, looks good in blue, also pix of Rachel.
Now you will have to research Mk4 -4 motion forums to create a wish list.

That is a Stunning MKIV
only suggestion is a Euro Rubstrip for the Front and a Euro Bumper for the Rear and to top it off install some nice europlates from www.germanplates.co.nz (yes there is a .co.nz address for it)
Cheers.
Yeah, I'm not really a fan of red, but it stood out from the silver ones that seem to make up about 95% of them.
Please enlighten me, what is a Euro rubstrip?
I have a personalised plate (not the one in the photo obviously) and inquired about getting it made into a Euro but its $279!
I also thought a red-letter plate would look good but thats also $279, so maybe not.
Are those replica plates legal? Has anyone here purchased one?

Hi all... been a member of the forum for a few months while researching my purchase options...
Picked up my new baby a couple of weeks ago now.
1998 Golf, GTI, 1.8t Manual, Black.
Its a jap import in pretty good nick, I managed to pick it up with a Remus exhaust, Bilstein shocks and H&R Springs already installed, which made me very happy and I've just treated it to a nice set of Michelin Pilot Preceda's.
I plan to put a rear spoiler of some sort on, maybe R32 one or something similar and have a Newsouth Indigo boost gauge to install at some stage soon.

Welcome to the forum.
Does the car handle will with that suspension?
Any idea why your car doesnt have the factory tinted rear tail lights?
Hi, thanks for the welcome.
The car does handle pretty well with the Bilsteins, compared to a couple of standard Mk4's I've driven it has much less body roll.
No idea about the tail lights, I did think they seemed odd, smoked tail lights are actually another mod I plan to do soon.

Hi AhhhThirtyTwo,
To tell you the truth, I have no idea what the standard boost or life expectancy is...
I think it is about 11psi but have no idea regarding how long it will last :P
If it was 11 and is now 21 it must go like stink.

thats how much mine is making, now that i put in the boost gauge. Standard exhaust, but replaced all the boost/vac lines with silicone ones.
Wow, seriously? Your car looks nice though...
Hope you get a chip soon. Really, you will love it!!
:)
hey buddy...
have a look under the hood
lift of the engine cover..
depending on what your Coil on Plugs look like
If they look like this they it usually means its a VVT 1.8t with 180hp
(https://www.vask.org.nz/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ecstuning.com%2Fstage%2Fimages%2Fdis%2F958%2F600%2F958.jpg&hash=e5fb3e57c687a2edf193b8b6789a6bd760ce088b)
if they look like this it usually means its a non VVT 1.8t with 150hp
(https://www.vask.org.nz/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ecstuning.com%2Fstage%2Fimages%2Fdis%2F4323%2F600%2F4323.jpg&hash=73747c2ec2b0f659414c1230a3a041e38f68b116)
also if the I on the end of your GTI is Red that usually indicates the car is a 180hp variant unless someone has badged it up prior to your knowledge..
there are other differences... but the above are the most blatant i can think of..
oh yeah.. the 180hp ones arent Cable Throttled they are electonically throttled.. so chances are when you put your key in the ignition the EPC illuminates breifly (electronic pedal control)
I think the 180HP comes with ESP as well

Get my downpipe done and the chip will be next. Thinking of getting Superchips to do it.
yeah 150hp AGU only runs 6-7 psi.
Hitmans old GTI spikes to 21psi but runs constantly on 18psi, very reliable been like that for almost 2 years.
My GTI also runs chipped 18 spikes to 19.5. But yeah been like that for over 2 years now.
Welcome 21psi - dublover (aka Simone) - Dag se, ek hoop dat jy jou tyd hier geniet.
Very nice looking golf BTW.

Not posting my car, i never posted any of my dubs in the forums.

Well Vask is great! I like seeing what other people have done to their vdubs. Have wanted a mk 4 gti since i was 15 or 16. Yes, liking New Zealand. Been here for about 4 years now. Originally from The Mother City and miss it dearly.
Any particular reason you don't post your vdubs? Or you just don't?
Dubbed posts his cars up... when he's selling them ;D
Yup yup ;)

It has a Gamma headunit, with separate single CD player which I disconnected. The car didn't have a stacker cable, but I got one with the Phatnoise. I'll take a pic of the connectors tomorrow if I get a chance.

Thanks Nik - nah I haven't had the damage repaired yet. I had Final Touches look at it but the scratches are too deep. It's gonna need a panel and paint on the rear quarter and bumper. Unfortunately have other things to spend that grand on right now.

Reasonably stock at the moment apart from tints, lowered on B&G springs, V5? wheels, euro bumpers.
However it does have some nice factory options such as a sunroof, climatronic and red recaros. I didn't like the seats initially, however they have really grown on me.
Over all it is very tidy, and a good base start
First on the list will be some german plates, new wheels, and to make it louder! You can't even tell the engine is running sometimes. So probably a cat back exhaust as I hear the stock system is very restrictive? From looking at the position of the airbox something like a swiss cheese mod probably isn't advisable either? As the box isn't right at the front corner

They are NZ new GTI spec wheels (I think European as well).
Did you buy it from a dealer? It was for sale on Great North Rd about 12 months ago.
Judging by the spec (sunroof, climatronic, red seats) I'd say it's from Singapore.
Nice to have climatronic and the sunroof though, not many GTIs have that 8)
Nope bought it privately
Yea the climatronic and sunroof were 2 of the reasons I bought it. Once I get around to putting some new wheels on it should look pretty neat :)

very clean GTI :) surprised a Jap import came with those wheels rather than the 16 inch RXII's. Still those 17's look the part :)
Cheers, would still like to go a deep dish 18" and pump the guards some, has anyone here done anything like that?
On another note, the car has done 215000kms, mostly motorway kms, and there is only one tiny knick on one of the rims, not a ding in the body work and the interior is spotless. Goes to show what love and care can do for your auto!
Hey there. 03 R32 black.
Bilsteins & vogtland springs on next week by Powerhaus.
Other than that its pretty standard for the time being .
Been here for a little while and thought I should introduce myself.
Had a 01 V6 4motion which was my first Golf and traded on the R32 about 8months ago from
Giltrap Pres AK.
Was during that trade I realise I have the bug bad for mkIV s in particular.
Intended mods..
Bonrath Grill and Cupra front splitter.
Quickshifter.
Front & Rear H&R sway bars and strut braces.
ECS Tuning cross drilled & slotted rotors.
Schrick Cams.
Chip Tuning.
Think thats enough to keep me and the bank busy for a while.

Welcome to the forum. Post up a pic of your car if you have one?
Hi, Fairly new to the site.
Heres my car, its a 99 Golf GTi Manual
-Jazz Blue
-Aftermarket Front Lip from USA
-Lowered 30mm
-17" VW Alloys
Have got a full R32 Kit , but has been sitting around for 2 years and havent put it on. lol
Hi everyone,
I have been a member of VASK for around a year and have found the advise and help really good.
This is my first h2o VW, prior to this car I owned a turbo charged 1968 VW beetle which was quick
but now I have a young son the golf is much easier to live with and much more useful.
its an NZ new MY00 MK4 GTI 1.8T.
I have only added a few things to it, so its pretty much factory.
Audi S3 front upper and lower suspension braces.
Autowindow.com electric window control module, this allows full control of windows via the key remote.
Whiteline 22mm adjustable rear anti roll bar.
4motion front air dam and Audi tt pedal pads and thats about all.
all good so far, Paul.
HI ALL

18'' rs5 black faced lensos

Reflex sliver is a Mk4 colour, not a user.
Reflex sliver would be the most common colour on a Mk4 in the country.
ahahah ohhh lol, my bad! :D
Anyone Know Who Has The Most Modded Mk4 Golf ?

Will have 2 keep a better look out 4 your car ;)
one pic up in the what did you do today section

whole kit was made to fit behind a standard mk4 bumper. however some sanding back behind the oettinger bumper was required to fit nicely.

Good point.
Now that I read it back today I feel a bit of a tit for saying it but I notice it almost daily and it bugs me.
One guy told me he "Brought a new Dell laptop" and no matter how many times I said "Show me it" he just kept saying "No, I brought it from Harvey Norman", "Well show me it".........
I then tried to explain to him what I meant, but he just looked fecking clueless. ;D

Cheers guys. I've got some 16 inch RX2's for it will black them out at Pro Coat
And will lower it a little. the later model 20v's pack so much more punch than the early ones!
Allan recons it's due to the pistons and rods being much lighter than the ones used in an AGU
I'm wondering if someone chipped this car in Japan/? Might have to scan it for boost levels.
^^Nice wee Estate

Hi guys, pretty new to the forum so thought i'd introduce myself and my car.
I'm Elliott, on the North Shore of Auckland, 19 years old.
This is my new car, well almost, had it for a month now but been very slack at getting pics up.
It is a mk4 2000 Bora, 2.3l V5.
125,000ks on the clock, purchased for $6.4k
Very tidy car, paint is in really good condition, as with interior, only a few minor imperfections. Currently only work done so far is raising it back to stock height after cracking sump, and installation of a high end audio set up.

oh, guts for them, guess i got lucky then. Is yours jap?
Yep mine is a Jap import, though I have removed all bar one of the obvious signs :D
enlighten me, what are they? are there many nz new boras, or the 20v version of mine in nz?

1 NZ new Bora - a green 2000 10V V5 auto evaluation car. Then was two UK spec manual 150hp TDIs also, but they were registered overseas so technically used imports.
Plenty of 20V V5s around, easiest ways to tell a 20V: 2001+, tiptronic trans (rather than auto on 10V) and the red '5' in the V5 badges.
Telltale Jap import signs: US/Jap narrow number plate recesses and holders, bendy aerial fitting, minidisc or navigation headunits, window monsoons and lastly Japanese stickers on windows, in engine bay, on boot lid, in door openings, and on sun visors. ;D
yea my monsoons are on the to do list, they drive me mad! Oh ok, good to know, i'll work my way through them.

Cleaning those wheels is a bitch!
Mate your one is not too bad, I use toothbrush to clean these tiny screws all around my standard 16 inch bbs rims, good outcome though.
Love your R32, looking so nice!
Well after selling my polo i thought that i might have been cured, alas i've just bought another black vw.
This one is a mk4 wagon, highline with leather etc, jap import, 1.8t with 5 speed tiptronic.
It is the missuss' car in reality but that doesn't stop me from 'improving' it.
Initial plans are cambelt, WP, tensioners, and gearbox service. Also needs a bloody good clean...
Possibly followed by some lowerage and wheelage, (although the chin already scrapes on my driveway)
Feels a whole lot quicker than my old a4 was , lighter car plus no awd i guess... still i might have a fiddel after everything mentioned above is sorted, i'm thinking new downpipe 2.5" or 3", new inlet pipe and filter to the turbo, and perhaps a reflash.
Just joined this forum, I own a 2000 Golf Gti manual. With sunroof. Done around 152,000kms. Used to drive a Mk3 Golf GLi 2.0 Now want to look for a replacement which is similar to this but newer version. Very hard to look for a manual + sunroof..
my GTi. my first euro, nice lil' cars to drive!
lowered on FK AK coiloverrs/springs. was supposed to lower 60mm, but only went 45mm >:(

welcome, and nice pic :)
Hey everyone,
Bought my first Euro for my birthday last year for my daily driver as my twin turbo Legnum was too expensive to run everyday. Managed to score a great deal on a 1999 Golf GTI. Sadly she is an auto (although this is probably a good thing as I already have a track car project underway) have already done 10,000km's in it in 6 months with no major issues. She is completely stock. I am considering getting some lowering suspension and a new downpipe in from overseas in the coming months to help with the handling and performance (as much as an auto box will let me ;D)
Here's a couple of photos

nice car and nice mods. unfortunately some of them may not just be glued on but bolted on?
since mk4 golfs in silver are so common, swap doors..? :D

These ones look glued (they're factory ones by the look of the logos) so should be ok. New doors is always an option though :)

I would have to say this is one of the cleanest Mk4's I have seen. Goes great now too with the APR tune in it. ;D

Watch out with the rain shields, our jap import wagon had some paint touch ups on the front doors, the painter didn't bother removing the rain shields first so there is a distinct line in the clearcoat where the shields used to be.

Bit of an update, after plenty of drama with spacers its all sorted. 20mm rear 15mm front, didn't need to roll the guards in the end, infact, getting less rubbing than without the spacers...

needs about another 5-10mm lowering IMHO to much gap at the rear maybe its the 19's

thought as much :D they very sexy. I like that the spokes in the mesh are larger and easier 2 clean than alot of other mesh design wheels.
^Still require a bit of elbow grease, but can fit a micro fiber glove in the spaces.

Hey guys,
Just bought my first VW. 2003 VW Golf 1.6L. Jap import with 80,000kms on the clock. Nothing too fancy or fast, but it'll do. Impressed so far, do want to lower it a bit and throw some alloys on it. Open to recommendations too, I'm new to all of this!

Looks nice and tidy. Some Mk4 GTI alloys might be a start, would get it looking nice. They're pretty cheap now, should be able to pick up a set for 2-300.
Heres my '99 Gti. Pretty stoked to finally get one, always wanted another after my first car was a mint mk1 GLS that cost me $500 and ran like a dream :D

Rad! I'll definitely look into that. Any paint around that's suitable for DIY or would you recommend having them done professionally?
give them a wax and grease, then scuff them up with sum 320 grit sandpaper, then give them a rub with sum scotch pad. wax and grease them again and u should be ready for priming. after priming scuff it with some 400grit, blow and wipe them down and u should be ready for topcoat. :) if your going for the black rims i would suggest u grab yourself a paint kit called 'Perfection'

Yes u can get a Hard Drive, Not sure if the Phatnoise box works with the standard head unit. There are a few guys on here that have the phatnoise box so they should be able to help u.
If it's NZ new a Phatbox will work, if it's a Jap market MD headunit, no go...
Guess I should finally get around to posting my mk4 up.
1999 GTi.
Lowered on coilovers
17" Enkei RPF01s - nice and light, and I love them - ideally I'd like to get some identical 18" versions.
Neuspeed front and rear swaybars
Unknown brand aftermarket exhaust with ABT tips
Towbar :(
Plans - keep the performance mods simple, maybe swap out the exhaust for a turbo back and chip it. Maybe play around with some different wheels, and of course I'll wind down the coilovers a bit more, keeping in mind that it's my everyday driver and Christchurch isn't the place for a low car at the moment.
It'll also be getting thule aero racks and an array of bike carriers.
I'm a lazy with taking pictures so I'll regurgitate the ones from the meet last weekend.

Cheap not really- try eBay mate but prepared to pay
hae bro got the front mount on and a few other little things done.
really keen on a bumper that the intercooler can sit behind. if anywun can help me out?
i ended up heat wrapping because going over the engine made it quite hot. felt a big difference, also got a turbo smart bov instead of that replica ssq piece of sh?@ lol and moved it to the cold side by the throttle body, defiantly felt the difference there to.
overall iv felt a massive improvement doing these mods
looks great mate, much gains? any other engine mods?
just cut up your small bumper for now till you get sorted.....

Bought a 2003 V6 4motion Bora in Silver. Will update with pics next week once weather clears and i've tidied it up a bit!
I'm quite blown away by the v6 4motion; such smooth, effortless power and very consistent power delivery right up to high revs. It's taking me a day or two to get used to the 6 speed though. It's a bloody good motor but in a big heavy mk4 it doesn't feel very nimble. Mk3 VR6 is so much more raw and unrefined which makes it more fun to drive but obviously is not as comfortable. If i had the option of taking a mk4 v6 4motion or a mk3 vr6 around a track my pick would be the mk3.
got a R32 wing off ebay for my mk4, was really happy with fitment, especially since its from china

Got some new BBS rims for the Golf fitted today. Looks heaps better than the ugly ones the dealer put on :D
should have the rear shocks shortened and springs compressed by the end of the week hopefully
I'm brand new to the site.
I have a MK4 GTI '03 1.8T Manual.
Had it about a year now, not much in the way of mods yet. Just an Green Panel filter and I've installed a catch can simply because it was a crap load cheaper than replacing the OEM parts that had perished.
Hope to have new springs soon to get it a little more grounded and looking to save for an exhaust and some rims once I have caught up with some bills. :P
Is it the 180hp version being that late off the line? Or did we not get them in NZ?
Nice colour :)
Unfortunately no. Its a Jap import and from what I've seen online it was only the US that got those out side of Europe. But should be easy to get up there with a couple of mods.
What's your Engine code? there are afew late model 180HP mk4's floating around. A mate of mine has a grey one like yours that's 180HP also Jap Import. Check the Tag in the Boot wheel well. will tell u the HP
Yea I've checked all that . It a 111KW model so only 150HP. I was a little disappointed as I hoped all late models would be 180Hp but oh well. Its still a great car and I love driving it.
It does have a brand new gear box as when I first looked at the car its gears were stuffed and the yard had to replace the whole thing. So it shifts really nice and tight. I figure with an exhaust, filter and a little lower it will keep me pretty happy. Though if I come into money I'm sure I wont resist tinkering more. >:D

none that i am aware of. the car is a jap import. im pretty keen to find out if there is any though haha, i've just recently got the car. :)
Nice one Niz - would be interested to know what bumper that is if you track down the manufacturer. Do you know if it is fibre glass or some sort plastic?
thanks man :)

Latest crappy phone pic. Needs a clean, bumper colour is a little off so will get that sorted, then Cupra lip and I'll be happy. Extremely stoked with the new fmic and how that fits. Big high five to Vert for the fitting!

Looks great brad! Tempted to do rear bumper R32 as well?
Looks slick, IC tucked away nicely.
Cheer fellas, not that tempted on the R32 rear, I've got a nice valance already which ties the lines through the bottom of the car. If anything I'll try and score a euro plate rear and switch the valance over.
R32 looks the best for sure, good effort!
Shave the rub strips off of a euro rear bumper... that would match things up nicely 8)
Looks so nice! Definitely on the list of things to do. It's a shame I might have to go replica though. I agree on the euro shaved bumper, too.
My latest toy and I just wanted to complete the VR collection, and I love this thing! Makes me want an r32 now tho... :- :-X
NZ new, reflex silver ::), supposedly 1 of 3 3dr VR6's. I know of one of them in a teal up in herne bay. 2000, leather interior, no sun roof. Spent last weekend with clay bar and couple of coats of wax so has come out pretty well, well I'm happy at this stage! RS4 rep wheels with conti contact 2's.
It does need to be lowered, just need to Make a decision on shocks/springs or coil overs. (most prob coils tho but way down the track) and most def some new wheels!

Get the Black Automotive Double sided Foam Tape thats how I adhese all our Euro Plates to our Cars..
Clean both surfaces with Soapy water dry and then pre heat with Hair dryer
Then apply the plate with the Tape pre stuck on it

Looking real good Ash, always loved how the R32 sits. Would prefer the Ocean tails though, but that's just me. 8) Stance that thing already! haha
Looking good Ash...tho not sure about the tails either. Mate you going to join us for the next planned Welly meet?
More lows, more pokes >:D
I disagree, I think that's a very clean original R32, leave it as it is Ash! Save the down and out for the mk3.
I very much like it the way it is Ash.
Looking good ash needs tinted windows and mk5 rear wiper ;)
Already has mk5 wiper fizzy ;)
Thanks guys, few small mods to go yet...
Oh u right lol had to take a 2nd look lol ;D

Poon, please take the roof racks/stickers off the r32. It's such a beautiful example, but the roof accessories make it look a little trashy. Save the 'scene' stuff for the mk3.

Although I don't have a roof rack on my mk4 and don't intend to get one but I think it is one of the simplest cosmetic mods that brings out the best in ones car.
A bunch of fuel wasting clutter IMO ;D
I dont leave mine on, only use them when i go boarding. They good if you actually use them ;)

We have meets in Auckland once every 2-3 months, the last one was two weeks ago I think.. where are you based anyway?
Not really "breakfast runs" but just meet, greet and hang about for a couple of hours.
That sounds great. Will be keen to be at the next meet. I am based in Orewa so can meet anywhere in Auckland. Thanks

Did you recently acquired this off TradeMe? If so, I think it should be Vert's old project.
Hi. Yes it is Vert's old project car. Really happy with the car
The black wheels suit it, still a great looking car.
I had to get them refurbished so decided on the black. Just need to get the bumpers re sprayed and put s cupra lip on then im done
The black wheels really suits the grey car - awesome! Looking forward to seeing that Cupra lip on it.
If you get the bumpers re sprayed look in to molding the rear valance into the bumper making it one piece which will then match the front, one thing I wanted to do but never did.

Hey guys,
I thought I would share my progress with you guys as its a bit of an on going project. I picked up this in early October and started working on it straight away. Sorry for the crappy photo quality!
This is what it looked like when I first got it.
Soon after I started looking at getting some wheels for it. I ended up getting some 17" Advant Eco-motions.
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/10351838_10154891593105451_6264333119544084978_n.jpg?oh=e0db55d81f0b27ad99acc13c1880f002&oe=54F9A699&__gda__=1425776015_f630f1600e4570d0add32e7f5e0f1c4a)
Soon after I managed to get my hand on some Raceland Ultimos and got it to sit a little better.
At the moment, I'm looking at doing a few more things like going for a badgeless grill, an R32 kit and I'm wanting to tidy up the interior a bit because the doorcards are not in a great state at the moment. The fabric has come away from the card itself and looks pretty rank.
Either way I'm happy with the car and the progress so far! It's been fun! ;D

I'd say not as it has front reflectors on the bumper, looks to be LHD and also be running airride
wasn't there a Mk4 Golf wagon with a Bora front conversion in Akld a while back?
Just picked up my first ever euro 99 mk4 gti standard apart from headunits only done 142ks only cost 3k fairly tidy apart from few rips on seats first car that has its entire service history going to be my daily and do a few mods like rims turbo back exhaust maybe ecu if I can do it on budget
Hey Guys,
Decently new to this Forums as i have purchased my Golf a couple months ago.
2000 Mk4 GTI
NZ New
166ks on body
140ks on engine
Had a couple things done to it.
-Lowered on Coilovers (not sure which ones)
-Different rims (not sure what they are) + oversized tyres (225 by 45)
-Had a full engine tune (not sure which stage)
-Boosting on 16psi
-Custom Carbon fibre pod filter cover
-Boost Gauge
-Forge BOV
-REMUS twin exhaust tips
-Tints all around, 35% rear and back passenger windows, not sure what % the front windows are.
-R32 Gear knob
-Sub for sick beats (needed) ;)
-Different Exhaust (not sure what it is but i know it's not stock haha)
Plans for new mods:
-Different Rims maybe Concaives or BBS
-Lowering a bit more
-Roof Racks
-Tinting brake lights
-Aftermarket headlights/LEDs
-KO3s or KO4 turbo, maybe an aftermarket one
-R32 Bumper (maybe)
-Front mount intercooler
-Retune on Engine
-Front strut bar
-R32 Leather Seats
-Spoiler
-New speakers (maybe more)
-Cat back exhaust (possibly)
-Might be after a new body kit
-Respray to a Gunmetal grey/blue
-Before engine retune might rebuild engine (not sure yet)
Planning on keeping this and turning it into a show car, as i don't see much mk4's at any show and shine type events.
If anyone has any info about this car that would be great as the old owner didn't know too much about it.
Also my little brother took these pictures, Let me know if you want some taken (located Auckland) as he is getting into photography and needs to build his portfolio and get his name out there.

Nice, welcome.
I'll add some pics soon, but in November I picked up a blue 2001 V5 in Manual, 215,000 km.
Was a very cheap buy and is currently stock standard aside from the head unit.
Despite it being cheap, it's in pretty good shape mechanically. CV's are perfect, brakes are brand new, gearbox shifts well, bearings and ball joints are solid, no oil leaks and it doesn't feel like many of the 170 horses have gone to the glue factory. The main issues I have had are constant coolant leaks, which I have traced back to a busted thermostat housing gasket. Does have a fairly jarring ride though, which I'd attribute to ancient bushes.
So far I have:
- Replaced a snapped Coolant hose
- Fitted a new breather hose
- Decontaminted, Cut, polished, sealed and waxed the paint work
- Fitted a JVC double DIN touch screen stereo
- New oil, gearbox oil, filters, cleaned throttle body and MAF
Tomorrow is a new thermostat housing, thermostat, crack pipe and water pump, plus complete coolant flush to stop my gearbox being constantly covered in G13.
Other things to fix
- Peeling clear coat on drivers mirror
- Respray bumpers, as both are looking pretty shabby
- Respray bonnet, as there is a strange sort of clear coat failure (Looks like something has been spilled on it)
- Refinish the standard Montreal II's and respray them grey (Only the LF one has any significant curbing thankfully)
- Touchup a few stone chips on fenders, doors and one on the roof.
- Renew all bushes
- New coils and plugs
- Car is running rich, so diagnose and fix, cleaned MAF and it still persists. No vacuum leaks, so my guess is oxygen sensors. Just waiting on my scan tool to arrive so I can get to work on it.
Clutch is slightly sticky, but should be good for a little while longer.
All but the bonnet are/will be DIY projects.
Don't really want to mod it much, but will paint the wood interior parts, fit a leather gear knob (As opposed to wood) and do a leather Recaro/leather Door card/heated seats retrofit if I can find some seats cheap enough.
So far I'm absolutely stoked with the car, love the sound and it definitely goes well, almost diesel-like torque. Doesn't handle brilliantly, but I don't really think it's worth the spend trying to improve that.
It was only supposed to be a shed money run around, but I've grown to like it more than I ever liked my B5.5.
I would be inclined to say your MAF is gone burgers. Hence the poor fuel consumption.
Surprisingly, not much is required to make these handle really well. Even with the v5 upfront.

I've been researching the handling and have been tempted to go with the full TT front suspension swap, seems to resolve a lot of the geometry issues. Just need to priotitise making it run properly first. Would also love to bring out that sound a little bit more.
Actually suspecting the coolant temp sensor at the moment, put the new thermostat in today and it went in fine, but now the temperature gauge won't move. The old one was pretty filthy, but I put it back in anyway ::). Guess a Qualitat trip is in order tomorrow. Would be great if it solves it, but otherwise time to look closer at the MAF.
Are MAF's still stupidly expensive?
Hi Guys,
I Just bought a Mk 4 GTI - Silver 1999 model.
It was a filthy mess with some paint fade and just generally dirty, it needs a front right wheel bearing or cv joint i am not sure yet.
It has a boot spoiler, Blow off valve and ABT back box and 16" BBS wheels
it's got 1 small tiny dent.
We also own a MK3 CSL and a MK5 GT and a caddy in SA

A hammering at the hands of my mother.
I flicked her a $1000 bucks now its mine mechanically its been very well cared for by my dad never missed a service but is a 2.0 auto
Sweet for the daily commute. I've just updated it last week with some new 19's and tidied up the bumpers and front lip as both have ripped off numerous times.
