Hi all,
New owner of a 2005 Mk 4 Golf 2.0 s/w here.
Very happy with the purchase aside from the following. In the 2 months I have had it the fuel consumption has been absolutely terrible sitting at around 13.5L/100kms. My old 3.0l straight 6 BMW had less than that and my 3.7l commodore had around 13l.
The internet says I should be getting 8L/100kms on her.
All my driving is urban not exceeding 60km/h. I don?t have a heavy foot and tires are at spec pressure.
Something isn?t right!
It has 47k on the clock and the last owner had it sitting in storage for the last 8-9yrs.
It?s had a full service in the week I got it at a local garage (not a VW specialist). Oil replaced and all filters. They said all was perfect and she does indeed run like a dream.
Is there anything I can do before I take her to a VW garage?
What could be causing this? O2 sensor failed? MAF? Injectors?
Many thanks!
It could need a new thermostat. The gauge is VERY buffered, so will read normal for quite a range, but you may find it's not really warming up properly, and on a bit more of a highway run, you may even see the temperature drop, if the thermostat is stuck open enough.
On the other hand, I'd be very surprised if you got down to 8L/100 around town - probably more like 10, on a good day. It's always a bit worse in winter.
There's so many things it could be, though. Especially after all that sitting around.
I just got my daughter a 2003 MK4 and it displays Kilometers per Litre rather than Litres per 100km. If I drive it sedately I get around 11km per litre - Are you sure you aren't reading it assuming its Litre's per 100KM ?? - Maybe the later model quotes that figure but ours is definitely KM per Litre as it goes down the heavier I am on the gas peddle.
Having said that I just did a conversion and 11 km per litre converts to 9.09 Litres per 100Km which isn't that great either. Then again I'm comparing a 1.6L Automatic Golf to my work Manual 1.5L Suzuki swift which gets around 7L per 100km
I guess 9 L/100Km isn't too bad for city driving. All of our trips so far have been very short as she's still on her learners.
Coolant temperature sender?
