Hi
I have been supplied a retrofit kit from overseas to put MMI 2G Navi into my Q7
I'm about as sure as I can be that I have installed it correctly, and that it is doing everything it should but not reading the DVD. It is looking up 9 satellites, it knows its location, but will not read anything at all from a new 2014 maps disk. I have tried 2 disks already
A bit odd since the supplier sells these as having "brand-new" DVD reader mechanisms fitted into the drive, and in return I paid him a good price for a kit
His reluctance to admit that the drive could be faulty and his generally lousy approach to after-sales support has left me thinking I should just cut my losses with the guy and not waste time pursuing a warranty claim with him. He cannot be trusted
I will probably just buy another used drive from eBay, or maybe source a new mechanism and fit that to this drive, but before I do is there anybody in the Chch area who has MMI 2G Navi in their car and would be willing to let me call around and just plug my drive in to their car's system and see if it reads the DVD?
If someone could help I would much appreciate
Hay go talk to simon at audi. He has helped me with technical support.
Think its tuam st

Thanks for the reply, but I was hoping to avoid having to approach the dealer network, even though I agree Simon can be helpful at times
It may come to that, as a last resort
I was told a couple of weeks ago that 2G didnt work in NZ? It was either that or there wasnt any 2G NZ maps? A mate was trying to sort his nav in his UK import early B8 A4.

I hope you're not right, or else the factory DVD on my desk labelled Navigation 2014 Aust/NZ is an elaborate hoax!
3G systems do not use DVD
The small print on the back of the DVD refers to being prepared by TomTom
Are the DVDs you have tried genuine? The drives are very fussy about what they read.
Good luck m8.
Last resort you could buy a carputer think there 25o.oo and run windows in your car with all the google maps ect and plug ya hard drive in with loooootsa moovies and music. Try tap into the existing screen.
Sorry no help

factory = genuine
this drive is rooted. Having no trust all in the supplier anymore, I have opened it up (voiding his worthless warranty), and sure enough the bearing for the laser head slide lead-screw is worn out
This is not a new drive, despite the seller selling kits at a price entirely based on his statement that all kits have new drive mechanisms fitted
I will name him in due course, so others can beware. He was very very keen, almost frantically keen, to get the drive sent back to him once I said that I planned to open it up and inspect what he had sold me
see next post:
email as sent to supplier of retrofit kit:
The image below shows what appears to be a worn out end bearing surface in the [laser] slide lead-screw in the "new" mechanism that you shipped me
There is a good 1.5mm of back and forth play in the slide as a result. It is possible to coax a disk read by exerting manual pressure to reduce that play. I have never seen any sort of optical drive that has intentional play like this when new, by design
I will be able to make a further comparison when my stock of new Fujitsu mechanisms arrives
[there should be a 48kB jpg image here, showing the worn part, but it won't upload. Is this an ongoing forum issue?]
We are looking at a supplier (that also supplies the kits you mention) for a complete cd stacker unit... might sit back and wait pending this...

Yea, obviously I'm reluctant to name him till I have a new and (probably) old drive side by side for comparison, to be sure, but I'm already about as confident as I can be that he's less than honest
Wow thats rude a. Im glad you hade a look inside. Most people don't know how to.

How did you get on?
We have decided to sit back and wait first before we go down that route

Yup, new drive side by side with the one from Australia that was also claimed to be new by the seller, and his one was definitely worn out and completely knackered
As soon as the real new mechanism was fitted to the Navi drive, the unit worked perfectly and immediately
Faced with the inescapable photo evidence the little fraud is trying to abuse me and accuse me of using his drive to fix what he alleges was my old one. Unfortunately for him, I never had navigation in the first place, and I had his drive opened up by a service company here in Chch, who broke his warranty seal and we took photos
The name of the seller, and I ask you to leave this post here please (moderator) because I stand by this allegation 100%, and am armed with all the evidence:
Martin Westwood
Euro Car Upgrades Pty Ltd
Shop 20, 82 Sugar Road
Maroochydore QLD 4558
He trades from his website http://jku.com.au/ and also from ebay:

Note the statement: "unit comes with brand new DVD drive mechanism (this is what fails in these units)". In my experience, this is an outright lie
Beware this guy! He's just plain dodgy
