Title: New horse in the stable
Post by: Audidude on June 28, 2017, 11:17:39 PM
Simple brief: 2WD, manual, low kms, good value with collectible prospects medium to long term.
This car fits the bill perfectly.
'03 996.2 C2 manual 64,000kms
Some work to do (IMS, DMF)

The 996 (especially the update - 996.2) is seriously under-rated - although that's changing rapidly.
It's a very tactile drive, especially in 2WD form. The C2 is lighter and quicker than the C4S - there's no C2S in the 996 range - that would have been my pick if there was such a model.

Thanks.
In the wet the C4S is more surefooted, of course.

But I wanted driving pleasure, not quicker times from A to B - in the dry the C2 is reputedly marginally quicker. In the wet it's not. That matters not even a tiny bit to me.

What matters more to me is steering feel (better without the weight and torque from driveshafts) and the increased involvement that 2WD gives over 4WD - that's one of the reasons I chose a Megane over a Golf R, and why I'd choose a GTI over an R...

The only time that speed across the ground matters to me is when I'm racing - that's why I have a race car - NOTHING on the road compares even closely with that thrill, I assure you :)

Thanks schatters.

Yes, NZ new - 3 owners, last for 8 years, very low mileage.

Can't comment on a 997 C4S as not driven one, but most would say the 997 is better looking and being a later model has many improvements. They are also significantly more expensive in the 2nd hand market. Model for model with comparable mileage about $25-35000 more.

The reputation of the 996 as a lemon has pretty much gone, now that styling issues have "matured" and the mechanical woes are now well known with effective solutions.

The 996 C2 is reputedly one of the more involving drives in older 911s - much more civilised than a 993, but that latter car's rawness is a huge part of it's appeal for many.

And as I said above, I'd choose 2WD over AWD for my fun car. If it was a daily family car, different story of course.

Nice work Greg,

looks super tidy too.

It's in unbelievable condition - I'm really impressed with the Audi-like quality of materials in the car - all the rubber seals are still like new.
The paint has come up like new with my Rupes dual action polisher and polishes.
The interior is full leather and unmarked in as new condition.
With only 64,000kms on the clock I've been very lucky to find the exact model that fitted my brief.

I'm certain the money is safe - no 50% drop in 3 years.......:)

Just one, switched position and edited. The clip is not in true time sequence.

Renault daily driver, Porsche weekend fun plus other times when I can't resist raking it out - which is too often!
