Title: Bulb Issue Light on Dash but No Actual Issue
Post by: NicB83 on April 26, 2018, 12:25:51 PM
Hi all,

I have the main beam not working message coming up on my dashboard. I bought the car last week and the previous owner has one of the headlights replaced a few months back. The warning light stays on the dashboard all the time and the error message about the main beam not working comes up when I start the car but the beam itself is working and has always worked since I I had the car. It's been scanned and has thrown no error codes.

Do I just need to take it in and have this message cleared?

Thanks
Nic.

My MK6 had the "check lights" dashboard light come up one time after I tried and failed to remove the lower radiator hose clamp - that's literately all I did and then when I started it that dash light come on but after turning it off and on again the light was gone

That probably doesn't help you as it sounds like you've already tried that, but indicates there could be some software bugs

Will that be the light levelling sensor arm?

Now that you say that, the left main beam that keeps showing up as the error is well out of alignment with the right hand headlight. Could it just be that they need to be realigned?

This happend to me again this morning - I washed the car on Saturday, it stood in the garage on Sunday and then this morning when I started her up the bulb warning light came on again, got out and checked - every single light is working perfectly - then turned the engine off, waited 10 seconds and started it again and now the bulb light was gone

I don't understand what's causing this - hopefully the leveling arm and/or sensor doesn't need to be replaced?

I am going to have mine scanned and looked at. Dont really want to leave it to long encase it starts buggering up other stuff.

I don't - I haven't replaced any bulbs since owning the vehicle and I had a friend who can read Japanese translate the service book when I bought the car and there is no record there of replacement bulbs so I believe they are the original bulbs that the car was manufactured with

How's your battery condition? Often you can get odd warnings like this as the battery starts to decline.

Also, I know on the Superb I had, these bulb warnings would come up intermittently before the bulb in question actually died.

Mhm maybe it's the battery then - I haven't had any issues with the battery even in these cold winter morning she starts up first time without issue

However the battery is the original from 2011 so it's getting old now - I am planning to get the car serviced by the dealer next month I'll get them to check the battery and replace if necessary

Not sure if its the same for VAG vehicles , but I cant see why not , & that is it is common to see this on BMW where you get a bulb blowen warning light come on when every thing is still working .

Turns out that the old bulb has built up high resistance & is about to blow & the car detects it as a blowen bulb already .
It can also be caused & triggered by dry corrosion in the bulb holder contacts also causing high resistance & bulb out warnings

Hope this helps

Mine has the factory xenons. When the previous owner replaced the headlight Im not sure if the bulb was replaced also (probably wouldnt have considering he seemed to think Repco would be a good place to take it and get them to scan it and fix it for him). The park light warning sometimes shows after the main beam warning aswell . I swear I have to sit in the car for a good couple of mins reading while the warning script appears on the dashboard hahaha. She is due to go in to be looked at by a VW specialist tomorrow so fingers crossed it isnt to big a job to sort.

Error message was due to one of the levelling adjusters not being connected properly (due to the last cowboy owner thinking he was something out of Gas Monkey Garage). The park light was on its way out, the headlight had corrosion in the connectors and the lights needed adjusting.

Got it all sorted and YAY, no more warning light on the dashboard and error message after error message on start up  ;D

Good result. Hopefully not too pricey.

Nope - $174 in total  :D The new headlight the last owner forked out for cost him $303 and it still didnt fix the issue. Muppet.

Got mine sorted too, removed corrosion and replaced two bulbs, cost $5 for the bulbs and nothing extra for cleaning corrosion done during standard service
