Title: anyone know if tire rack ships internationall? or any tire shops that will?
Post by: Blake on January 18, 2005, 11:22:13 PM
awaiting an email from them to confirm if they send to NZ but wondered if some people on here might know if they or any other do in fact send internationally.

Cheers

yeah the tyres are a pretty sweet deal huh. Mine are looking to be around 77 each. How did you find out whether they shipped internationally or not?

beeker - just got an email reply from the one I sent yesterday - they do send to New Zealand. Just sent them back my address etc so they can calculate shipping. Will let you know how I get on.

Got a quote back from the guys - all up for 4 tires it and freight it will cost NZ$650 + 80 for gst = NZ$730

I was being quoted 290 per tire in NZ ex of gst so would have been close to NZ$1500 to get them in NZ.

For shipping, you might find lower rates if you have a business address, or can convince someone to let you use theirs. I find most US companies that ship bulk items will ship them cheaper that way.

If you don't mind me asking, how much was the final cost of bringing the wheels over (incl freight)?

Not a prob dude. $1500 all up including tax off $120 into the country. The guy from tunershop.com - Ingo - put on the invoice they had a total cost of only NZ$900 so then I didn't have to pay as much tax and no duty at all.

post pics of the wheels dude... what are they... BORBET huh huh huh?

I went to pick them up on Sat but customs hadn't sent the fax to NZ Post saying the wheels were cleared - wasn't too happy about this so am seeing them today and having them picked up by my courier and delivered to Firestone in Parnell to hold them till I get my tyres.

What ya think - should I go ahead with getting the tires from the states? NZ$750 vs NZ$1500?

Here are the wheels - what ya think?

Those are centering rings, I believe to make sure the wheels fit correctly to your hub. I think it'd be pretty easy to tell if you need them or not.

I don't recall having ever needed them ...

Mmm I was really close to getting some schmidt modern line but decided on these as they werent as chunky looking. It was a mission trying to get a decent shot of them cause they bounced the flash all the time! Haha I even got a pic of my gf sitting on them in an attempt to take the piss out of the Brit boys who tend to do that sort of thing - of course it's for personal viewing.....

cheers matey. just looking at finding the right size wheels. I think perhaps 204/45/16 on the front will work better than a 205/40/16.

also at the back I will look at 235/40/16 rather than 225/40/16 seeing as it will give me too much stretch.

What ya think?

??? ??? Why would you have bigger tyres on the rear of a front drive car? ????

I agree, it wont have any advantage performace wise but I reckon it looks cool, and lets face it, while the mk3 vr6 is quick it will get eaten alive by a wrx. I would still rather the vr6 though!

Hold up young fella, it depends on what model WRX you are talking about. I dont mind taking on the odd WRX, Ive heard of people in VR6s beating them once rolling.

I agree, just saying trying to make the point that the performance cant be his main reason for the wheels.

The mk3 is a much nicer car to drive and I know what I would rather drive!

Just saying there are more performance oreintated cars for the price of a nice vr6

:)

Of course I realise it is a front wheel drive. Reason wheels are larger at the back is purely asthetic. You honestly thought I thought it was real wheel drive? O dear.

:-\ :-\

I didn't think you thought it was rear wheel drive, just questioned the motivation.....

I'm a firm believer in form following function and question the impact of putting wider rubber on the rear of a front drive car, what the affect on the balance of the car, braking & overall safety.  Could be possible that the grip on the rear is reduced because the load is spread over a wider area ?

The Golden rule in all cases for modifying anything must be "first do no harm"

did not realise there was a golden rule to having some fun with your car. If you are worried about my safety re: breaking, then don't worry as I'm not such a fast driver - remember what I said - reason for the wide wheels is purely asthetic. If we were all to be so pedantic about safety then why not simply walk than drive? Calculated risk you say? Yes precisely.
