So as many of you know I have had an itch that needs a scratch in the form of the Lupo GTI.
I decided to get a quote for insurance and what blown away on how expensive it was, and then also I assume regional insurance compares to big cities.
So to compare to the RS2:
RS2, full insurance, value of $30,000. Monthly pay: $48.77
Lupo GTI, full insurance, value of $6,000. Monthly pay: $47.70
How does that work? Only a $1 less for a car thats a 5th of the value and a 1/3 of the power.
What shocked me even more is that the current owner of the Lupo thats based in Auckland pays $80 per month for full insurance!
Insurance pricing generally makes no sense.
what about annual premiums ?
monthly payments usually cost more.
$80/mth, $960pa cos orklun !
:P
but yes, insurance companies work in an alternate universe.
Try Youi
/sarcasm
Pay Yearly, not monthly.
Is interesting how much insurance is for the very same car & Value in different parts of the country
When we moved from Auckland to Dunedin , Our insurance came down so much I was convinced they had made a mistake & phoned them about it .
Work this out for logic , Its not like we were in a dodgy area in Auckland , we were in the middle of Mt Eden not far from the Mt Eden Village , the cars were both parked off the street & not visible .
When we first moved to Dunedin, one of our cars had no off street parking & we told them this ( so you would naturally think more of a risk )
The insurance for the same car went from $800.00 a year in Auckland to $260.00 in Dunedin & our other car went from $300 a year 3rd party only to some where around $120.00 a year for FULL insurance
Same company, same value on the cars !
We have classic car insurance on our Beetle now, agreed value of $15,000.00 , for $152.00 a year ($12.67 a month)
Probably be 3 times that in Auckland based on passed experience ??
So did you find any decent insurance in the end?
I have the Mk1s insured with AA on a Classic Car policy, but they say the Lupo GTI doesn't qualify as it's not old enough or rare enough.
Evidently 1997 is old enough if the car is considered rare.

I found different classic car insurers have different takes on what they will insure.
With ami the mk2 golf didn't qualify.
But with classic car it did.

Hmmm, I think it needs to be older than a 1997 car to qualify. Most of our cars are insured with the AA - but they wouldn't put the Nissan Figaro (1991 and fairly rare in NZ if not elsewhere) on a classic policy as they said it wasn't old enough to be considered a classic (so that's actually with State who offerred a better deal). The AA did however agree to a classic policy on my 1982 Coupe Gt - $85 a year.

Wow! May I ask who your insurer is? They sound great.

They're quoting me $495 ($41 / month) for a Lupo GTI for $5500 total value...
On AA's own Classic Car Cover page - "What makes a Classic" they car pictured is a circa 2010 Mustang and they say
"Some later model vehicles may also be considered a classic. These are generally rare, hard to find, or are believed to one day be collectable."

I'm with AMI for house and all cars.
The quattro is $52 a month fully comp, glass cover, no mileage restrictions, garaged at night in Wellington, agreed value of $45k
Strangely the A4 3.2q is $44.50 a month, same cover, not garaged, but it's worth less than 10k
I pay $141 per year for the Mk1 GTI covered for $12k.
It makes no sense to me that the Lupo GTI covered for less than half as much - at the same address in the same garage with the same drivers - costs more than 3 times as much.

I guess its an expensive car to repair? Alloy guards etc.
It'd be cheap compared to a B5 RS4 and with it only being insured for $5500 that'd be their maximum exposure on the car.
Best I've found so far is Trademe insurance at $380 / year.
After some polite discussion with an understanding person at AA they are covering the Lupo as a 'classic' for full cover at $118 per year!
Result!

Wow that just shows you how much wriggle room there is if you get the right person.
Reading this I think I need to shop around. Paying $74/mo in Wellington for my S3
Now paying $53/mo with Trade me insurance 8)
Insurance is odd.
I have both my 1996 Prado TX ($10k) and my 2007 Audi RS4 ($45k) insured with the same insurer. My RS4 is considerably cheaper than the Prado. I don't get it. Also, my RS6 Performance is disproportionately more expensive than either. I suspect that they are using the Southpark insurance bail out model...
