on the drive to work today, my 'check engine' light goes on.

first chance i get i stop and open the bonnet and look at all the fluids, oil, coolant etc, nothing amiss, temp stays at 90degrees.

my service reminder says 'service now' yesterday it said in '5900kms' so i guess this was never reset.

would that service reminder cause the check engine light to come on?

or could it be something more sinister?

car is an mk5 golf 2.0 FSI

My check engine light is also on but in my case it relates to a faulty glow plug (TDI).  On your car it could be something as simple as a dirty spark plug - a Vagcom scan will reveal all.

It would be running rough if it was a coil pack wouldnt it? You need to VAGCOM it to find the problem/answer.

actually running very smoothly, idles well, and very quiet, so nothing obvious to me.

bringing it to the dealers later this afternoon for them to shed some light.

ok i left it with the dealers this morning and just got my car back.

the check engine light has been cleared, but was told it will come back again because this part is causing the problem. for the life of me i can't remember what it was but it will cost $900+ apprently.

does that sound right? anybody know what that part is?

Posting in here as I have similar symptoms to report. Folks have a Mk5 FSI auto too and the check engine light has just come on.  No noticeable issues - still running sweetly, oil, water and fluids all good.  They're down South and unfortunately a fair way from anyone with diagnostic gear but I was curious as to what circumstances this light would come on?  Could it be something as small as a loose plug, vacuum leak or the like?
