Does anyone know this RS6? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Cars/Audi/RS6/auction-270099597.htm A friend of mine is interested in RS6s and doing some research currently.

Anyone have a quick bullet run down on RS6s and what to look out for? I'm aware of the suspension issues, what about other common faults? Gearboxes, engine, etc?

Aside from RS246.com what other forums are a good resource for potential owners?

Gearboxes can be a problem for sure, but I don't know how/what you can do to check them.

this is from RS246.com (not sure if you've already found this thread , though you did mention this site - but just in case)

Here is a check list of the major bits that you should look out for in no particular order:-

Cam belt

The current thinking is ~4 years or 40,000mi. This will cost around £1200 and make sure the thermostat, water pump, rollers and tensioners have been done at the same time. The labour to change those is the same and you will also know the coolant has been done. (some garages quote a very cheap belt change but then miss out those extras)

Brakes

This is variable but they can last 20,000mi or just a day if you take it to a track! There are two types of disc; the drilled and the non-drilled. The drilled are more expensive so budget £700 for a pair at front and £500 at the back.

Gearbox

Not a lot you can tell unless on a test drive but they do break and cost the price of a small car when they do. Check the changes are smooth and once warm the lock-up clutch should engage and rarely slip. (it won’t lock when cold)

Suspension

You will read a lot about the Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) but one thing is for certain it WILL fail! A growing majority will recommend that this be replaced by an aftermarket coil over. They are more firm than DRC and the three most common are listed below. The DRC springs are black but the coilovers can be identified by the colour of the spring but expect it to be covered in dirt!

KW v3 – (yellow) v.firm, fully adjustable (but not on the car), won’t corrode
Bilstein PSS9 – (blue) firm, rebound adjustable, and some corrosion issues in the past
H&R – (red) lowest cost, less firm, not adjustable but may sag when fully laden

Other bits that you need to look out if the car passes the above are:-

Tyres

Again variable depending on how hard you drive the car but as a minimum it will be £150 a corner. Some brands can rub so choose carefully and avoid very soft compounds.

Intercoolers

The seals can leak causing a loss of boost. Although this doesn’t sound too bad it can over-work the turbos and cause them to fail – cost ~ £1000 OEM more for higher performance coolers.

MAF, N75, DVs

These three parts are key in getting sound performance. No set guide about when to change them but renewing them every few years will keep the car sharp.

TPMS

Tyre pressure monitors, handy to have but if these are dead look at £350 plus fitting for new ones. Many people just turn the system off.

Modified Cars

You will also find many of vehicles that have been modified in one way or another. As long as this has been done well don’t let this put you off. You will probably find that you will do the same in time. I won’t go into detail but here are the most common ones:-

ECU remap

Reprogramming the engine will unleash the cars full potential. Expect 10% more power and 25% torque. Lots of companies offer this e.g. MTM, MRC and Custom Code maps are just three. The gearbox may also need reprogramming.

Exhaust & Cats

Can be done in various stages depending on how much you want the car tuned but most would agree the car sounds much, much better!

Suspension

As above with the coil overs but bigger anti-roll bars e.g. Hotchkis transforms the car in the bends. Not essential but recommended.

RNS-E

The later version of the stereo and sat-nav, modernises the car but quite expensive if you add Bluetooth and digital TV. If you want to get this done look up ‘craigyb’ on the forum he is very knowledgeable and upgrades lots of units.

There are more upgrades such as brake cooling ducts, larger brakes, aero wipers, filters etc. They are beyond the scope of this guide though.

Pre-purchase Inspections

Get an expert to look at the car first; many of the nationwide inspection companies will not do high performance cars. I would recommend the guys mentioned below.

Servicing

Once you have the car it is important the right people look after the car. My recommended independent specialists are Unit20 and MRC. I personally make the 500mi trip to see Martin aka ‘Grizz’ at Unit 20 for all of the work on the car. Main dealers have a mixed reputation but one of note is Camberley Audi – many satisfied customers on here.

Hopefully after reading this you will have the fundamentals of RS6 ownership and enjoy the car as much as I and other forum members do.

Hi,
I recently joined this forum ,having in August 09. purchased an 2004 RS6 Avant thought I would let you know what I looked for.
Obviously the cambelt  is a major, the car I bought had just had it done at the cost of $3k, every 60k is required.
The front brake rotors had also recently been done $3k, new Pirellis  $2,800  A service $1200  , also the shocks replaced $6k.
A lot of money can be spent quickly so make sure that most of the items have been done !
A full service record at the Audi dealer also is a must in my opinion to preserve resale value as well as ensuring you don't have any un forseen problems
The Rs6 is an incredible machine and I haven,t had any problems since I bought and now travelled 10k in the last 6 months.  I looked at various cars like the Merc e55 AMG but they are generally dearer and aren't four wheel drive and in my opinion are no where near as good value as the RS6
As far as price is concerned I think being an import devalues it a little however with a good service record would still be Ok.

Thanks Allan (and welcome to the forum as well  Smiley) I'll pass that info on. He is looking at E55s as well but as you say they are typically more expensive and wagons are nearly impossible to find as well.

I second what Allan says. I've owned my 2003 RS6 for about 20 months (and done 45,000 km with it so its at 145,000 km). Make sure it has a service history, and consider it getting a pre-purchase from an Audi specialist. Make sure you go into it with your eyes open, and expect parts and servicing to be expensive. Get a mechanical warranty - it will help with some of the costs. It is a brilliant car, and I absolutely love mine to bits. It's just that everything costs more to do - e.g. thermostat failed. A $240 part except that you have to do a cam-belt disassembly to get to it - 7 hours labour needed, and the water pump gets done at the same time. Tyre pressure sensors are $350 a pop and they can fail from time to time.

They are very tuneable but beware the potential impacts on the transmission - torque converter and gearbox are known weak points with chipped cars, although reputable tuning outfits (eg MTM) have TCU software upgrades to help minimise the impact. I've gone with Bridgestone RE050A tyres at about $550 each, these seem to be wearing well although I don't think they have quite the wet weather grip of the Conti Sport Contacts.

Push the vendor on price - I paid $57K for a 2003 100,000km sedan 20 months ago, so try and squeeze them closer to $50K (even less if it is due any form of servicing as described by Allan). While the Avant usually goes for a bit more, and the one on trademe has the Navigation module, it is an import, and this counts against it.

Having said all that you are looking a buying an iconic car that outperforms almost everything else on the road even now, 7 years after it was released. What's more it's a very subtle car - most people don't even give it a glance, only those who know their cars recognise it for what it is. You fly under the radar screen (if you've got jammers  Grin).

There is a BBC series called 'Last Chance to See' which goes around looking at endangered species. I think the RS6 is a bit in that category given the world situation with peak oil, greenhouse, and nanny state regulation of speed. Make the most of it while you can!

Oh, and another excellent forum is RS6.com, the US RS6 forum. Heaps of stuff there on tuning and service issues etc.

Good luck with your 'beast' hunt!

As far as price is concerned the two RS6s advertised on Trademe need to be  compared to what I paid for mine ;2004 Avant  solar roof, all servicing up to date, mint cond 68,000kms  $55k   private sale, obviously most RS6 s of this age are higher kms than mine .
You need a motivated seller, I agree that a price around $50k would be realistic, I looked at a silver sedan at the audi agent in Tauranga at the same time as I bought mine ,it sold I think it went for $54k, I also looked at the red one at Coombes BMW at Tauranga, I don't whether it sold and the price although they offered it to me at $54k it was mint.It was a sedan 75k.
One dealer recently told me that the avant was worth 8k more than a sedan, however that sounds alot, I would have thought the 5k premium they were new maybe more like it.

Another vote for the Benz.

Is the RS6 posted by Wetaworker a private sale or through a dealer ?

I know of that yard in Palmerston North.

I don't really like the look of the Benz's rear.  A bit too bubbly for me  Tongue

Not sure if that RS6 is private or through a dealer.  Clicking on his user name show's he's selling a few vehicles but hasn't sold any in the past (unless you don't need to leave feedback for vehicle sales?)

My friend is pretty taken with RS6s - doesn't like the Mercs all that much.

I hate to ask this as it's I know it's been discussed a few times - but any thoughts on warranties? Could you still get an Audi NZ based warranty on a NZ new car? What are you current RS6 owners doing for warranties?
