Sooooo.....
I picked up this car in tauranga last night and drove her home to napier.

184200 km of prime nz road mileage on her.

Not sure how many of these came out in manual 4 motion here in nz, but it seems like there's not many of them around, hence why I jumped at the opportunity when I saw it for sale. Obviously needs some work done like roof lining, suspension bushes, etc and a decent valet which I will chip away at from time to time.

Had just about all her serving done at giltrap and tristam up to now. Hope she can do another 184k and become my high mileage hero.

There's just something about manual golfs that draws me like a moth to a flame.  :D

Like my fellow vaskers, I want to bring this car back to it's former glory,  even if it's just a boring old tdi   ;D

Quite a few sizable stones came out of the suspension and belly pan upon inspecting the suspension bushes and links.

Still a lot of cleaning, polishing and detailing needed, but she's looking better already. Loving the manual drive again.  8)

There is something satisfying with a manual transmission, unfortunately not to be with us for much longer (apart from classics)

I would say there around 50 of these in NZ. Maybe more?

Make sure the DPF gets a good warm up and blow out regularly.

Not the rarest car then, still enjoying the drive though.

Will be much better once all the odds and ends are sorted.  :D
Did a complete engine wash about a week ago and now the alternator is noisy, most likely time for new bearings. The joy of a euro.

Plenty of 2.0 TDI auto/dsg but probably uncommon in manual 4-motion config.

Started replacing some bits and pieces on the car including new swaybar end links etc. Next round of detailing inside and outside also coming up.

While tinkering around the engine bay yesterday i noticed that there's a noticeable amount of crankcase pressure when removing the oil cap ever so slightly with engine running. Have confirmed that the CCV valve on the valve cover is not blocked but open. Hardly any noticeable blowby from my Audi TDI, so this makes me think that the piston rings might be getting tired. Engine still pulls strong so i dont think its turbo related and no fault codes present when scanning the car.

Will be getting some advise from VW and perhaps do a cylinder compression test some time soon.

Fun fun fun....... :)

Hi I saw your post and i saw the car on trademe. It was there for only a day.
In response to the number in the country? there were 50 TDI 4motion ones bought in between 2006 and 2008. All were 6 speed manual.
they came with 2 different engines. 2006-07 wer mostly BKD engines. 140 hp or 103 kw these ones are the better ones in my opinion. twin cam 16 valve heads on them. they go really well for a diesel.
We have 2 of these, both gunmetal grey one has 295,000 on the clock. We got that one from Hawkes Bay. New from Euro City. The second one I flew up to Auckland and drove home. A very tidy car also with the BKD engine, its a 4motion as well. this one has 194,000 on the clock. Giltrap new and most of its servicing, Other servicing has been done at another Auckland VW dealer. The 3rd 4motion one was a 2008 4motion 6 speed, But this one had a BMM engine in it. 8 valve single cam direct injection. they are also 103 kw. They have a balance shaft arrangement. The BKD does not. They have a DPF The BKD doesn't. In my own opinion the BMM engine is inferior to the BKD. The 2008 one had the sport interior and the GT Badge and grille. nicer lookng front than the earlier model. Only kept it for 4 months. Just didn't ring my bells like the other 2 do. Tomorrow i'm off to Auckland again to buy another 4motion mk5 only this one is an R32 but its a manual one

Superfueler

Nice!
Are you also Hawke's bay?
My one has gone to my Mother, she's using it for school runs and only knows how to drive manual cars, she struggle's with auto's
It's not getting too much attention now that i have the DTM and the missus's B8 to look after.  :D
Is it the black Manual R32 you bought? They are nice, real drivers cars.

Was the 125kW Tdi available with manual box and 4motion  in NZ ?

???

Hi Superfueler, Yes the R32 i bought was the Black one on trademe. I took a chance and bought it sight unseen.
Flew up and got a shuttle out to pick it up from Mt Eden. The car was in amazing condition for what it is. Inside its like new outside its got a few wee scratches here and there but its getting fixed up in a couple of weeks. A rare 6 speed manual one. Im told only 40 manual ones were bought into the country. This car has been owned by the previous owner since it was 2 years old. It has all the service history and there has been no expense spared.
Its quite a rocket to be honest. Not the best on fuel though. But then again I didn't buy it for its fuel economy. We live in the south island, Dunedin. So 3 and a bit tanks of fuel to get it home. A couple of months before that i flew up to Auckland and bought our second 4motion TDI golf. Very tidy car. The previous owner had said it needed a cambelt and had a wobble in the steering. Fortunately I remembered this car had also recently been on trademe. Its had a clutch and cambelt all within 30,000 km of me purchasing it. it was a bargin so i grabbed it. I flew up and drove that home as well. I got from Auckland to Christchurch on one tank. about 1100km. less than quarter tank from Christchurch to Dunedin. 193,000 on the clock. the first one we call roughy we got from Hawkes Bay, then we had lockdown for a month so a friend picked it up for me. its got 330,000 odd on it now. I put another engine in it, a clutch and water pump, and front drive axles. it's the quicker of the 2 diesels. it's rough in the body and the interior needs attention. but it gets warrants easily surprisingly. fascinating. they go well, nice to drive and stick to the road well.
The R32 was bought as a bit of an investment as its low km and manual. it's very much of a fun thing to drive. very rapid and sounds great.

Gave the old forgotten girl a detail and new WOF today. She passed with flying colors of course  :)
Ordered a set of glow plugs and a valve cover gasket from SD european which needs to go in as starting gets more and more effort. Also needs some new shock absorbers soon, might get some sport springs with it to make the ride more solid.

Today was glow plug day for the golf. Being located in the oily part of the engine made them so much easier to remove then the audi's 2.7
Plugs torque spec was 8nm. Fitted a new valve cover gasket as well. She starts up super quick now.  :D
One more thing out the way.
