So it turns out I have a disease. It's called "Addicted to a cheap high milage Mk5 R32's in a cool colours" 🤣🤣. You might remember me from United Grey R32 I did we tidy up on a couple years back.

Story time.

April 6th my other half and I were visiting the Catalina Bay Market out in Hobsonville. While we were struggling to find a park we drive past the marina construction site to see a white Mk5 R32 parked out front. I was too busy gawking as we drove passed it missed the number plate. I asked my wife "did you see the number plate?" She said, "RDA something". Now I was very confused as RDA meant it had to of been registered only weeks ago. We found a park and walked back to it. Sure enough it was RDA817.

Now quick summary there are 5 NZ New Candy white Mk5 R32, I have all of them accounted for. All are DSG and all have a Sunroof. All of them are still registered except one. The highest milage and first registered one EPZ363. I car-jammed it and sure enough RDA817 came back as the new plate for EPZ363.
I had some pics of this car from over decade when it was for sale courtesy my mate Nik (RSZWEI).
EPZ363 had been a hyper mile car since its new. Its first owner was Sharp Interiors in Onehunga. At its peak it did 39,000kms in one year! However, in 2020 on its third owner the registration was cancelled. I assumed the worst, that it was involved in an accident and considering its advanced milage (263,000km at its last WoF in December 2018) it had been written it off... I was I wrong...

So we approach the car and boy... she's seen some things. All the wheels might as a well have identified as "graphite" with the amount of brake dust. Enough dents around the body to make Dent Devil drool and most noticeable the front bumper and gills are "munted". Like it has attacked a family of possums or something!? It also seemed to have some soft of aftermarket exhaust maybe a Scorpion as the tips didn't look nice enough to be Milltek.

So I do what any normal car pervert would naturally do and wait around for a 10-15 minutes (Much to my Wife's despise) and eventually leave a tissue with the words "Call me" on it. And went on my merry way. I did a little trick and do with NZTA that tells me the city the cars registered in. This car cam back as registered in Timaru? What the hecks it doing all the way it Auckland and only being re registered 2 weeks ago?

One week goes by two weeks go by. No response so I guess he either wasn't interested or my flimsy tissues is floating somewhere in Catalina Bay...

Then on May 26th (over one month later) I received a text at 9:30 at night. "Hi Mitch, I've got the R32 you left a note on. I stored the for 8 years and I forgot about it. Its in Auckland because I need a city car." Lucky I was in bed otherwise I might have fallen over.

I should probably explain now why I'm sniffing around a rough knocking on the door of 300km R32. Well, the concept of a guiltless thrasher Mk5 R32 in a rare colour just sounds great to me. Not to mention I have unhealthy infatuation with Sunroofs :D

So I reply back to Cain the owner and say thanks for getting in touch and if he has any plans for the car?. He replied, "I am leaving NZ soon so if you want it we can do a deal." So heck yeah were on! He's in Australia setting up for his move but says he'll be back in Auckland in a couple weeks (that was a slow couple weeks haha). So now were mid-June and he's back and says I can come look at it. I ask him for an address, and he says, "Ill meet you at the same place you saw the car" So I assume he doesn't trust me lol I am some rando fair enough.

So were at Catalina Bay. I already had an idea of the exterior but was mainly looking to check the inside and test drive. We arrive and the cars sitting exactly where it was parked before. But there's no one around I send him a text and he says, "ok ill shoot over". So were right next to Warf and I just see this little dingy heading towards us off a yacht. And sure enough he arrives at the dock gets out and says "you must be Mitch" he goes on to tell me he's a farmer in South Canterbury and he bought the car in 2015 and his wife drove it until 2018 (hitting some possums along the way haha) and then he had too many cars and parked this one in one of his storage units in Ashburton and forgot about it. It's in Auckland as he's moving to Aus prepping his Yacht which is in Catalina Bay. So he was living out the yacht hence why he didn't give me his address lol.

He fires her up and I have listen under the bonnet and it sound really healthy much to my surprise. We then take it up and down the road and it shifts fine sounds awesome. Driver seat has taking a bit of beating but If you covered the ODO you'd think it had done 180Km. We park up and have some back and forth and a deal was done!

Because the car was re registered it got a new current sequence plate which I was kinda sad about. But lucky me I was poking around the boot and found the original EPZ363 plates! Going to ask NZTA very politely if I can put them back on the car.

I was browsing the MFA menu setting my usual stuff setting the doors to auto lock etc. and I came across an unfamiliar menu that said "Kufatec E-MFA Addon" open it up and I get all these cool metrics that obviously the car has sensor for but don't display the to the driver. After some research it's a module that just plugs into the CANBUS. Very cool in my books.

I remember reading about the Kufatec add on back in the day over on mk5golfgti.co.uk and was hoping to see a used one for sale in their classified section but never saw one. Guess those that bought it liked it enough to never sell them
